To throw away the chicken every week?

Fluffyhood · 04/02/2021 20:41

I know IABU but I need to be shamed so I start doing something about it!
Family of 4, we have a roast chicken every week, we eat the breast meat and then I throw away the rest every week, I hate doing it but I'm too lazy and unimaginative to think of what to do with the rest of it!
Please shame me and tell me what you do with yours, I'd love to make it stretch to another meal!

You can buy ready roast breasts with the skin on to be cooked. Tastes like roast chicken.

I find this kind of waste and cluelessness mindbending.

I leave all meat at the end of the garden for the foxes 🦊
They eat it all ! And better that than festering in a food bin

CorianderBee · 04/02/2021 23:54

Strip it and Chuck in a curry

Aren't you worried about rats?!
JanuaryJonez · 04/02/2021 23:55

You're bonkers! Just get to it with a knife fgs!

MiaMc · 04/02/2021 23:59

Plan your meals for the week incorporating the chicken so that you know exactly what you’re going to be doing with it when you buy it.

Chickens are too cheap!

2018SoFarSoGreat · 05/02/2021 00:03

This makes me sad. Every week? What a waste of both food and the life of that chicken (the 52 you waste yearly) and I'm not a mad Animal Rights person or anything like that, but really!

Stop being pathetic. Buy a crown or figure out something to stop this waste. Really. Just sad and wrong!

HelgaDownUnder · 05/02/2021 00:05

How little chicken do you get sharing just the breast between four people?

If you read budgeting forums you would know that a roast chook can feed a family of up to ten people for several days, a week even. It just never ends, like the loaves and the fishes, but with chicken.

If all you want is the breast, why not just buy a crown, or skin on breasts, and roast them?

At least shred the remainder for sandwiches. No need to be too creative.

HelgaDownUnder · 05/02/2021 00:08

Oh, I just read the whole thread, the magic porridge-pot of chickens has already made its appearance.

No , I leave at far end of garden and I know foxes live in a wilderness behind

Skyla2005 · 05/02/2021 00:09

Put it out for the foxes

HaveringWavering · 05/02/2021 00:11

Sorry, are you saying that nobody in your family will eat a chicken sandwich made with cold chicken? That’s insane!

Snog · 05/02/2021 00:11

Make a chicken pho. I am addicted to making and eating this.

HaveringWavering · 05/02/2021 00:13

@Yellownotblue your chicken, tomato and rice soup does sound nice but you have clearly never eaten a proper paella if you think that it what it tastes like!

KenAdams · 05/02/2021 00:16

Soup, curry, tacos, sandwiches, paella, jambalaya. Do you only usually eat chicken roasted?!

Koolandorthegang · 05/02/2021 00:18

I love that someone suggested chicken risotto when this woman clearly can’t cook Grin

80sMum · 05/02/2021 00:28

We eat the legs, thighs and wings from the roasted chicken when hot: they're the tastiest part, imo.
Then we have the breast cold with some salad the next day.

dicdicnurse · 05/02/2021 00:28

@Tuscadero

Imagine not enjoying a tasty morsel of cold roast chicken from the fridge. Little sprinkle of salt and blob of mayo.
This!!! Nothing quite like it Smile My tip is to strip the whole chicken before serving your Sunday meal. It's done then and is easier to use for whatever you decide afterwards.
alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 05/02/2021 00:29

I am still boggling at one chicken breast between four people. We have a chicken between three of us and the leftovers are usually enough for sandwiches or soup, never both!

If you don't know what to do with it, freeze it! Or just buy chicken portions. Its not hard.

MammaMiaWallace · 05/02/2021 00:31

Phew OP you’ve come to the right place to learn about prolonging a chicken... I haven’t rtft but have heard it alluded to on here the mythical MN chicken that feeds a family for a week 😂 and you’re off to a flying start, feeding four from only 2 breasts... yet with legs, thighs, wings and then still a carcass to boil for soup - you are part of this mythical tribe already 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Anordinarymum · 05/02/2021 00:36

Leave it outside for the fox. That's what I do.

Mookie81 · 05/02/2021 00:49

@littledrummergirl

This week we bought one large chicken for two teens and two adults. Sunday they had a roast so used one breast. Monday was fajitas so the other breadt was used. Tuesday we stripped the rest of the meat and they had chicken and veg curry. Wednesday I boiled the carcass and used the stock and remaining scrappy bits of meat in a stew.
Was this the bird you bought? Grin

I used to do this and my Mum would collect it the next day wrapped in foil and deliver it to my brother who at the time was on a low income. He used to look forward to it!

He did come over for lunch sometimes by the way...on those days, he'd just take it himself!

This was when DH was working away though and my DDs and I only liked the breast. DH eats a whole chicken if possible!
