Just that really. I’ve just been sent an email from change.org asking me to sign a petition to push for a state funeral for him.
Now don’t get me wrong he was a remarkable man and an inspiration... but a state funeral? That will cost us, the taxpayer money we definitely cannot afford in the currant climate. Also I’m sure he’d rather the money go where it’s needed.

FFS! Please no....

RubyViolet · 03/02/2021 20:29
@RubyViolet I would of turned it down as a family with a vulnerable person in it.
It’s so difficult isn’t it, maybe Tom himself made the decision with all the facts in front of him. I am certain he was accompanied by medical staff, and had nursing in the villa. Surely that was taken care of too.

littlepattilou · 03/02/2021 20:29
@littlepattilou you've copied it onto other threads though. You're madder than a box of frogs.
Projecting a bit there dear...... Wink

I'm not the one at fault here. I'm not the one posting gross and repugnant comments about Captain Tom.

Shame on you.

BrumBoo · 03/02/2021 20:31

however the fact he raised money like so many others the only different is that his caught media attention and flew from there.

He didn't 'catch the media's attention', it was all quite planned. Not by him, but this was a very meticulously planned out story with other knowing exactly what they would get out of it. I think the media and people in general should stop making such a circus of his life and death, to be perfectly honest. It's all getting to be very low brow.

Ookkaayy · 03/02/2021 20:31

YANBU. A hospital wing named after him would have been more fitting considering he rasised so much money for the NHS.

Speedyspunker · 03/02/2021 20:32

Absolutely not, it would be no more than a day of self-indulgence for the virtue signaling grief tourists. History will look back at this time as a period when a great swathe of the country lost its collective mind.

@ChocolateSantaisthebestkind

Very silly question, but how would a state funeral have differed from Diana, POW's? That seemed as big an affair as you could get to me? What would happen at a state funeral?
There are very specific military protocols and ceremonies associated with a state funeral. In terms of the attendance at Diana's funeral I doubt it could have been much bigger, but had it been a state funeral there'd have been more of a (ceremonial) military presence and specific religious elements.
BrumBoo · 03/02/2021 20:32

@littlepattilou, toxicity? The worst I've seen is those who say he shouldn't have gone to Barbados, but even at worst that's just an opinion that could have been held back rather than a toxic mentality.

HibernatingTill2030 · 03/02/2021 20:34

No.
I am sorry for his family. But I don't understand the national outpouring of grief. Yes, he raised millions and was a remarkable man.

Port1aCastis · 03/02/2021 20:35

I do wish the internet would jump off the bandwagon and consider what the man's family want, after all they are the people arranging a funeral and are probably not appreciative of the mad hysteria flying round about their Father/Grandfather/ Great Uncle's send off, and they have asked for privacy

Ellie56 · 03/02/2021 20:35

Oh FGS is there no end to this shit?

No state funeral
No clapping
No street parties

No statues
No other bullshit.
No no no.
Just no.

Skipsurvey · 03/02/2021 20:36

a state funeral is kind of difficult with distancing

LouHotel · 03/02/2021 20:38

My mother ran with his daughter in PR circles, this isnt a spontaneous story that rose out of lockdown. His daughter has full orchestrated the PR with connections.

It doesn't take away from the sweet thing an elderly man did for the NHS but his family need to stop or the media machine will turn on them.

Cam77 · 03/02/2021 20:38

This country is off its rocker sometimes. Or I should say increasingly. “Stiff upper lip?! More like a reactionary blubbering emotional wreck.

Mittens030869 · 03/02/2021 20:39

There’s no need for frothing about this. Captain Tom is dead. Like over a hundred of others he died of Covid. There’ll be a few days of excess publicity, which will then calm down. He’s dead so there won’t be anything more to say.

It will be a private funeral, as this is what the family want (apart from far too many people sending sympathy cards, I expect).

It’s also fairly easy to avoid if you find it annoying. Just switch off the News and watch another channel.

ChocolateSantaisthebestkind · 03/02/2021 20:39

@LApprentiSorcier thank you!

Whoopsmahoot · 03/02/2021 20:40

Eh no.

I agree that no fuss and leave family to sort it out - however I can't help but think that inadvertently the "family" brought this attention on themselves too given the absolute PR machine that went into making Sir Tom a "saviour"

Maryann1975 · 03/02/2021 20:41

dhs cousin sobbed down the phone to us as they were struggling to choose the 30 people who could go to her mums funeral a few weeks ago.

How anyone can have a state funeral at the moment is beyond me! I have no idea what will happen if a senior royal dies, I imagine Everyone in that department is just praying it doesn’t happen, as it would be a logistical nightmare.

A local police officer died and his colleagues were banned from socially distancing along the route.

IF his family feel they need anything, maybe a fly past could be arranged, but I’m not sure if the BBMF fly in the winter?

I really feel for the other 110,000 families who have lost a loved one -they are still grieving and no one official is wanting to commemorate their loved ones or put on big funerals for them. I expect the majority would have preferred a much bigger service than the one they were granted and it seems wrong to allow it for one and not the others.

He seemed like a lovely old man, but so were many of the others who have lost their lives to COVID.

RaininSummer · 03/02/2021 20:42

I think all of these suggestions are very OTT. He was a great man of the moment and had led a long life. He was knighted. I think that is enough. Perhaps his local school could have a small fund to give an annual award in his name for charitable endeavours then he is remembered and encourages others.

Cam77 · 03/02/2021 20:42

This is what populism and “third way” ism has brought us to though. Politicians have nothing of substance to offer us as a species/nation so instead they just loom tot eh tabloids and the celebrity cause of the day and ram it back down our throats with a vengeance. We need scientists and tech revolutionaries running things - not PR merchants, journalists and lawyers be they Left or Right. We need people like Elon Musk to save us from these cretins.

AgeLikeWine · 03/02/2021 20:42

State funeral?

FFS, this is getting toward Diana levels of completely ridiculous mass hysteria.

Tom Moore did a great job raising a lot of money for a good cause in a short time. He received plenty of recognition during his lifetime, including a knighthood. Quite right, too. Now let him rest in peace.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 20:43

You clearly didn't see the foul tweet earlier from the poster littlepattilou was referencing that seems to have thankfully gone now then.
Yeah, just about going to Barbados, that's all it is. Hmm
It's collective toxicity, all these negative threads together drips into something bigger.

Quaagars · 03/02/2021 20:43
