AIBU to despise outdoor sofa and coffee table sets?

I don't know why I have taken such a dislike to them. Maybe it is because it is "indoor" furniture but outside. Maybe it is because they are all made out of grey plastic wicker which is not environmentally friendly. Maybe it is because I find them very "show-offy keeping up with the Jones' smug". Maybe it is because I know if I had one, I'd find bringing the cushions in from the rain a pain in the bum. I dunno but I really find them tacky and vulgar. Am I on my own?

That swing seat is like mine, though mine doesn't fold down Envy. However I can easily lie down on it anyway. It's in my front garden, where I lounge, with a good book and a G&T.

I imagine those who choose to have such things littering their outdoor spaces do not have a library or wall to wall bookshelves - indoors of course

I do.

HikeForward · 29/01/2021 20:13

If you have no outdoor furniture, where do you sit in the garden? On the grass? On the (disastrously bad for the environment) Astro turf? On a wooden pallet?

We have a lovely round outdoor bed thing with a canopy. It’s lovely to lie on in summer and read a book, listen to the birds, cuddle up with DC. I can watch DC from the comfort of my outdoor bed, sipping tea, instead of perched on the back doorstep! In autumn we bring the cushions in and cover the frame.

We also have a table with parasol and a bench: necessary IMO for bbqs, hosting friends for lunch in the garden, eating outdoors on summer evenings etc.

Our garden is full of mature shrubs and trees so quite private. If it was less private I’d probably put up a big tent or gazebo type thing with curtains or a canopy to make it a private space. I don’t care if people think that’s ‘tacky’, I love my garden and work hard on it, I’ve created wildlife areas for biodiversity and smoothly mown areas bordered by lavender and jasmine for sensory pleasure.

Well as you were going on about your own (imaginary) medieval garden I guess we all thought you’d put an image of that to delight us. No frantically google to find one..,😃

Perhaps you should READ posts properly. I said I live in a mediaeval village not that I had that sort of garden. That is not my garden. Obv.

I just have stained white plastic chairs- does anyone know how to get them looking white again? (missed point of thread)

Janegrey333 · 29/01/2021 20:52

Eye roll time:

🙄

They’re not my taste.

If ever I have any money and a decent sized garden they’re not what I’d want in my garden.

waterlego · 29/01/2021 21:13

I do wish you wouldn’t use cheesy emojis, Jane. It’s terrible common.

GADDay · 29/01/2021 21:27

Lol re libraries.

I have a garden of horrors AND a library.

We have a couple of this type of thing, bought a few years back. They recline when you lift up the armrest. They get put away in the winter.

I love ours - has big comfy cushions and sat or lay across it all summer in the heatwave. Put cushions in a big storage box in the garden at night. Allows us to eat and entertain outside in comfort. Great outdoor entertaining space, a sitting room outside.

Don't like? Don't buy.

CounsellorTroi · 29/01/2021 21:48

And of course the advantage of my type of chairs is that they can be easily moved anywhere in the garden depending on whether you want to catch a bit of sun or get some shade.

UnityUnited · 29/01/2021 21:51

My neighbour has your kind of chairs Counsellor. They are ok if there are only two of you and rarely have people around to visit.

StoneofDestiny · 29/01/2021 21:52

Yes - common as muck 😂😂

I don’t. Cheesy emojis are the “big fake smile” type as used by a certain individual when she is irritated. They’re often used to convey nonchalance when none is felt. Weird.

Correct. There is decking.
waterlego · 29/01/2021 22:10

Oh I see Jane. Only certain emojis are acceptable. Yes, that makes sense.

waterlego · 29/01/2021 22:14

I’ve got some of those chairs Counsellor, they’re great.

We’ve got some terribly common rattan sofas too (great for snoozing on).

Indoors, we have loads of bookshelves, and a piano and no Dunelm artwork. But we have a pool table which I imagine is seen as vulgar.

It’s almost like people can’t be pigeon-holed as a certain ‘type’ based on one element of their home/garden furnishings!

SoupDragon · 29/01/2021 22:14

Obv? Do you not have a dictionary in your library?

FraggleShingleBellRock · 29/01/2021 22:32

You would hate me, I've got a cheap 6mx3m carport/gazebo with a inflatable hot tub and lights and cheap patio furniture in my back garden. And like others, I use it soooo much more now. I'm even planning on getting the p as too extended and relaid so I can improve it and then I'm going to upgrade to 6 high back rattan swivel chairs and a round table . And a wood fired pizza oven too. Can't wait 😂

You obviously don’t understand what “cheesy” means in thus context. I want to do an eye roll but I’ll resist.
Janegrey333 · 29/01/2021 22:42

...this...

waterlego · 29/01/2021 22:51

You already used the eye roll emoji earlier. I tend not to take posters seriously when they use that.

We have a couple of this type of thing, bought a few years back. They recline when you lift up the armrest. They get put away in the winter.

My parents have some of those recliner garden chair things. They were quite comfortable but had a tendency to collapse unexpectedly or trap fingers (I’m going back to the 80s here so maybe they’ve improved the design since then! Trying to recline them was tricky as they went back in jolts and sometimes folded up by accident!)
Every time it rained there was a big panic trying to fold them up and get them back in the garage, I don’t think the cushions were waterproof back then.

I had a similar thing years ago but the frame was wooden, and it had wheels. But it was very heavy and eventually rotted (the wood, not the cushions, those were brought in every night)
