AIBU to not like words ending in 'ies' ?

There seems to be an increase in the use of a particular word ending, and it makes me cringe. Here is my list so far:

doggies
chockies
biccies
smellies
panties
buddies - just ugh in every sense, really makes me squirm.
veggies
roasties
rellies - (shudder)
sickies.

These words seem to me a bit infantalising and lazy - for instance does it really take much more effort to say vegetables instead of veggies? Do you have any words to add to my list, or am I just being unreasonable?

Pies?
Ties?
Babies?

blendedmummy · 28/01/2021 17:55

What’s so bad about buddies? And I don’t think I’ve heard rellies before (unless you meant wellies?), that’s a new one 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 28/01/2021 17:58

Rellies = relatives.

I'm with you, OP. I have a real aversion to most of your list!

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 17:59

Ah but pies, ties and babies are the dictionary words for these things so I have no problem with any of those.

Rellies being short for relatives.

Buddies ... just ... I find it so revolting. I know it's illogical. But if anyone talks about a 'buddy' anything it makes me want to heave.

So me, me rellies, buddies and some doggies are going on our hollies. Got to stop and get some smellies, panties and choccies first oh not to forget the bickies for the doggies. Would be your idea of a nightmare paragraph 🤣

BarryTheChopper · 28/01/2021 18:01

I feel the same about most of the words on your list, with the exception of roasties which I don’t mind.

Can I add jollies?

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:02

Yes, Barry, you can!

Also drinkies should go on there too, and sweeties.

We're on a roll now.

What about the singular of all of those kinds of words? Doggy, mummy, daddy, sickie?

I don't like them either, with the exception of sickie which is a valid word to describe something specific.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:06

The singulars?

Doggy - that's for children - what's wrong with dog?
Mummy & daddy - perfectly acceptable for young children and actually I don't mind if adults call their parents that (as long as they're proper adults in every other way).
Sickie - why not just use 'sick leave'?

OP posts:
LubaLuca · 28/01/2021 18:09

A sickie is taking a day off when you're not unwell. It's different to regular sick leave.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:10

Fair point, Luba. Sickie can stay off the list.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/01/2021 18:11

Roasties is always acceptable. Grin

AngeloMysterioso · 28/01/2021 18:12

You’ve forgotten the most offensive of the lot.

Kiddies.

FrameByFrame · 28/01/2021 18:12

My MIL does all of these! Plus 'slippies' (slippers), 'hollies' (holidays) and 'jammies' (pyjamas). She can't name any comfort/treat object without putting 'ies' on the end. Much as I love her, this really grates on me!

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:14

Oh, and she goes one up on 'kiddies' and says 'littlies'. Gaaahhh!

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:16

Ah, how could I forget kiddies?

Slightly off topic, but 'jammies' is as bad as PJs or jimjams! Again does it really take much more effort to say pyjammas?

iklboo · 28/01/2021 18:17

Not ies words but can I please add 'bubba', 'bubs' & (so help me) bubz to the list?

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:17

I can hear the gnashing of teeth and sense bodies writhing!

Bodies is okay by the way as it's the correct plural of body.

OP posts:
SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:19

Yep all bubbas, bubs and er, bubz should go in there too. All speech crimes in my opinion. Also don't forget holibubs.

OP posts:
Meowchickameowmeow · 28/01/2021 18:20

Sarnies for tea then on with the jammies!

Bambam2019 · 28/01/2021 18:20

‘Baby talk’!!
Even when people speak like that to small children it annoys me- model correct language around them right from the off.
One I hear a lot “look at the birdies in the tree” 😡

LubaLuca · 28/01/2021 18:22

I never watch Lorraine Kelly's show, but every time I see her on anything else she'll find a way to give her boobies a shoutout Hmm

MasterBeth · 28/01/2021 18:22

Don’t get me started on “puppers”.

Pukkatea · 28/01/2021 18:22

At first I was thinking yabu and people can say what they want, but you've actually convinced me. All terrible words.
