AIBU to not like words ending in 'ies' ?

There seems to be an increase in the use of a particular word ending, and it makes me cringe. Here is my list so far:

doggies
chockies
biccies
smellies
panties
buddies - just ugh in every sense, really makes me squirm.
veggies
roasties
rellies - (shudder)
sickies.

These words seem to me a bit infantalising and lazy - for instance does it really take much more effort to say vegetables instead of veggies? Do you have any words to add to my list, or am I just being unreasonable?

I do use roasties mmmmmmm (and toasties that my phone just tried to auto correct roasties to) but otherwise I agree with you!

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:25

What are puppers?

Boobies is also vile and should be banned, I did find the idea of giving Lorraine Kelly's boobies a shoutout rather funny though.

Going back to babies (okay) but not okay is 'babbies'. This may be an older generation and / or regional thing though.

Smellies is surely one of the worst, because something being smelly is surely a bad thing?! Makes me feel sick.
But yes any of the baby talking ones are awful, especially as they relate to adult activities like drinking.

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 18:26

Yes my husband thinks roasties is perfectly acceptable too. We have agreed to differ Smile

Note - always husband, never hubby.

Besties - cringe.

Hotzenplotz · 28/01/2021 18:34

Fatties
Piggies

Riapia · 28/01/2021 18:34

All words used by those who “ all snuggle under a blanket for a movie night.”

Puppers = puppies!

Roasties is acceptable.
Blankies is not.
Huggies for plural of hug is also not acceptable.

iklboo · 28/01/2021 18:41

I worked with a woman who said 'huggles & cuggles'.

Sendingasurprise · 28/01/2021 18:49

Who delivers your letters?

iklboo · 28/01/2021 18:59

Who delivers your letters?

He's known as Postman Crap round here Grin

VetiverAndLavender · 28/01/2021 19:05

It's fine to not like those words, but I think it's silly to ask if it's too hard to just use the "adult" word instead of the "baby" word. People aren't using these words because it's difficult or takes more time to use the real/original word. They're doing it because they like the way it sounds. They think it's cute, probably, and their opinion is no more right or wrong than any other.

(For the record, I don't think I use any of these "ies" words, though I do speak all sorts of nonsense when I'm talking just to my husband or the dogs. Inside jokes or just having fun.)

Saywhatyoumeanandmeanwhatyousa · 28/01/2021 19:08

I agree. These all give me the heebie jeebies

Shutupyoutart · 28/01/2021 19:30

Yep i agree with all of the above, bar roasties im guilty of that one! Not an ie sound but can i add famalam, holibobs and fambam to the list?

Shaniac · 28/01/2021 19:42

Some of you must live boring lives. Grin language evolves sometimes its playful. Plus i say doggo all the time and even my dp has started saying it and he hates dogs.

Middle123 · 28/01/2021 19:48

I’m with you on a lot of these OP. Also is it just me that HATES when people say kiddos or doggos. Absolutely gives me the rage!

Notgotanyidea · 28/01/2021 19:49

All of these are dreadful, by far the worst is hubby

alibongo5 · 28/01/2021 19:58

Who delivers your letters?

The postman. Yes, OK I may be boring.

Alexindiamondarmour · 28/01/2021 20:06

OP this one is going to make you scream - a friend and her children call chicken nuggets “nuggies”

Calmandmeasured1 · 28/01/2021 20:12

Is it only words that seem to me a bit infantalising that offend your sensibilities? Can't you just overlook posters' idiosyncrasies?

GreenGordon · 28/01/2021 20:58

Someone on tv last weekend said “we’re all in lockie-D” (lockdown). Grrr!

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 28/01/2021 21:47

But it's not just posters on here that do it - if it were, I could cope (reluctantly) with that. It's everywhere else - my friends, family, work colleagues, social media, the media, book writers ... maybe some people think it's all so cute but to me it sounds like talk which is suitable for young children rather than grown, fully functioning adults.

Just remembered another horror - gas and leckie bills.
