AIBU to not like words ending in 'ies' ?

There seems to be an increase in the use of a particular word ending, and it makes me cringe. Here is my list so far:

doggies
chockies
biccies
smellies
panties
buddies - just ugh in every sense, really makes me squirm.
veggies
roasties
rellies - (shudder)
sickies.

These words seem to me a bit infantalising and lazy - for instance does it really take much more effort to say vegetables instead of veggies? Do you have any words to add to my list, or am I just being unreasonable?

Fucking jammies! Gives me the rage!

MossandRoy · 28/01/2021 22:44

Pennies, for money. Silly. Although I do call my cat Mr Kitty.

Arrivederla · 28/01/2021 22:49

This is not really the same but I hate the expression "picky tea" as used by some half-witted posters on here.

Drives me mad.

Artesia · 28/01/2021 22:59

Can I add “yorkies” for Yorkshire puddings. Don’t know why but I can’t bear it!

Artesia · 28/01/2021 23:00

Am on a roll now- don’t think anyone’s yet mentioned the worst of all..... panties. Bleugh

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/01/2021 23:05

I dislike most of these but...

I have no issue with cheese toasties & I'm afraid our cats are referred to collectively as the 'the fluffies'. Grin

PoochiePlush · 28/01/2021 23:06

What about wellies?

PoochiePlush · 28/01/2021 23:07

What about baddies? (E.g. villains)

EugeniaGrace · 28/01/2021 23:09

My 4yo would agree.

Me: oh look at all these baby froggies

4-year old: there is no such think as a baby frog mummy. Baby frogs are called tadpoles.

This is why I don’t like homeschool.

StrawberrySquash · 28/01/2021 23:16

Oh God, pennies, as in 'it cost pennies'. No it bloody didn't. In general there is too much cutesiness in places where it isn't right.

PillowSandwich · 28/01/2021 23:30

So it actually has nothing to do with ‘ies’ endings, it’s horrifically twee abbreviations you (perfectly reasonably) can’t stand?

Menageries, prairies, calories, groupies, coteries etc are all fine?

Tartyflette · 28/01/2021 23:49

'Picky bits' is far worse than picky teas IMHO.
But I agree with most of the above although time has made wellies, baddies and a couple of others more acceptable. And surely puppies is the correct plural of puppy? As per the 'change the y into i and add -es rule'.
( I can ever only hear the word "leckie' in a strong Liverpool accent. I thought it originated there)

MerryMarigold · 28/01/2021 23:55

I call biscuits 'biccalillies' and I think that's OK.

Baby talk. An old man talked to my dd about her bot bot. Could have been a bottle, memory doesn’t serve. Dd looked at him like he was mad because I use complete words. also why dd was banned from watching teletubbies

BitOfFun · 29/01/2021 02:25

Leaving aside the slightly alarming old man, the most offensive of all the words listed has to be panties

I claim an exemption for Scousers, who invented 'leckie' before it was even on Brookside!

Chiccie · 29/01/2021 03:26

Guilty.

Tootsies for toes because it’s just so CUTE if said while giving those tootsies some nibblies

Chiccie · 29/01/2021 03:27

There’s also baby bunnies for any rabbit

SeeyouontheothersideofCovid · 29/01/2021 06:37

I like that description which does resonate - yes, the horrible tweeness of it all. But as Nom says above, it's also baby talk which may not be okay for young children but is certainly off-putting in adults.

As I've said before, words that are grammatically correct are fine - I have no objections to correct plurals eg ponies, parties, posies etc.

I agree for the most part but think baddies (villains) is acceptable. Also don’t mind toastie. Not sure why those seem ok!!

TroysMammy · 29/01/2021 07:13

Bunnies - it's a sodding rabbit.

FelicityBob · 29/01/2021 07:21

Veggies is not ok. It’s veg. One syllable

Royalbloo · 29/01/2021 07:28

Willies!

Sorry....I couldn't help it...

3rdNamechange · 29/01/2021 08:09

@SeeyouontheothersideofCovid

Yes my husband thinks roasties is perfectly acceptable too. We have agreed to differ Smile

Note - always husband, never hubby.

Came on to say hubby 😂
ZaraW · 29/01/2021 08:18

YANBU any infantile words not spoken by a child is unacceptable.
