Scented candles AIBU

Afternoon all, AIBU to think that reasonably priced scented candles that actually smell don’t exist?

I’ve had expensive ones as gifts (Jo Malone, Jo Loves, Neom etc) but can’t afford them on an ongoing basis.

I like them on in the evenings to make me feel cosy and relaxed but is there a brand that actually has a scent that you can smell once it’s burning that would require me to sell a kidney? Wink

Agree with Aldi and TK Maxx suggestions.

TigerDroveAgain · 22/01/2021 20:47

Beeswax candles smell nice - wholesome smell - and don’t pollute the air in your room the same way even the most delicious smelling scented ones do. They sort of clean the air if that’s possible

NewCatMummy · 22/01/2021 20:51

St eval every time esp the Seasalt and figgy pudding ones. Also beautifully handcrafted soy candles on Etsy- I’ve got loads and they’re lovely but not as strong as st eval.
@neotraditional does this work? www.etsy.com/uk/shop/ApothecaryMoonchild

I think I saw them recommended on here.
Brilliant, thank you 😊

didireallysaythat · 22/01/2021 22:22

I've been buying these ones

valentte.com/

They have a sale on right now plus their gift box deals are great. I think they also offer test sprays of their fragrances.

peaceanddove · 22/01/2021 22:37

I used to swear by The White Company candles but they seem to have gone crap? I've been burning their Winter and also Pomegranate ones for the last month, but not so much as a whiff unless I stick my nose 2 inches away. So annoyed 😡😡😡😡

longtompot · 22/01/2021 22:40

I love the scent of beeswax candles. That said, my favourite candle is St Evals Seasalt one. I've not had a sooty nose issue and I've used them for years. The only time I did was when we cleared our chimney.

peaceanddove · 22/01/2021 22:41

Thinking about it, my friend buys her candles from Melt and her house always smells like Heaven. Might give them a go.

itwillbehormones · 22/01/2021 23:04

Sainsbury's do good ones, Aldi are fab, M&S so a rip off of the white company called "seashells" no idea how they are getting away with it but it smells identical.

Mid range Neptune candles and Elemis, I've never ventured to jo malone level

jelly79 · 22/01/2021 23:07

I recently bought the blackberry and bay wax melts from B&M which smell better than the same fragrance in Jo Malone

raspberrysundaes · 22/01/2021 23:09

Waxify - they sell soy-based wax melts that smell amazing! Subtle but lovely.

I can't get on with Yankee Candle candles as they give me a headache but their wax melts are fine for some reason Confused

I also like the Wickford and Co large jars from Home Bargains - gingerbread is definitely one of my favourites as is the purple one but I can't remember the name Blush

AmelieTaylor · 22/01/2021 23:09

@Winterwoollies

Wait for the “I have to be immediately sick if I smell a scented candle/diffuser/plug in” brigade 😆
I'm sorry, is there a reason you're taking the piss?

It's no fun I can assure you. Headaches, vomiting...

I'd love to be able to light a scented candle or have a Reed diffuser & not feel like that.

I can't even cope with a jo Mine candle unlit or a plug in not plugged in. Lots of scented cleaners used in public spaces. Etc.

Count yourself lucky if none of that bothers you, no need to be horrible about it.

shamalidacdak · 22/01/2021 23:12

Anthropologie candles are great and less than $20

JaniceBattersby · 22/01/2021 23:17

I am always searching for new candles and like a PP I have found my fave White Company had gone downhill.

These are the very best candles I think I’ve ever found from this little company in Scarborough that I came across on a day trip with my kids. They fill the room with scent and are reasonable prices.

I love the Wickford & Co ones from Home Bargains, they're only £2.99 and smell amazing. I love the Rhubarb and Pear (I think it's pear!) one that they do in the spring. DH's friend who's an state agent walked into our house one time and went straight up to the mantlepiece to sniff the candle to see if that was where the nice smell was coming from, and it was. He said it hit him the minute he walked in the front door!

TaraR2020 · 22/01/2021 23:20

I like heyland and whittle - the ones in a tin are great value for money and don't lose their scent

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 22/01/2021 23:25

@QueenArnica

If you love Jo Malone, can you not make it well known that the Best Present Ever is a voucher for JM?

I'd love it if my friends/family really wanted something, even if it was just a voucher towards it. They are bloody expensive, but us rather buy something you really want.

I don't know what the quality is like (I can't tolerate any fragrances/scents/oils etc anymore - I wish I could) but I do know it's worth getting cleaner burning, better quality fragrances etc

BertieBotts · 22/01/2021 23:27

Ikea ones are the only cheap ones where the smell lasts in my experience.

Lavanderrose · 22/01/2021 23:33

Marks and Spencer’s!

Iamthewombat · 22/01/2021 23:33

I bought some St Eval candles (strongly recommended on here) and thought they were a bit crap. Not a strong scent and they burned in a tunnel, yes I burned them correctly before anyone asks!

I’ve given up taking a punt on TK Maxx candles. It usually ends in disappointment!

The best bang for your buck, scentwise, is Woodwick.

ellendegeneres · 22/01/2021 23:33

I bought from a seller I found on tiktok and bought from her through Etsy. Her candles smell insanely amazing I can’t begin to describe. The first went through a bit too quick on the wick so I am using the rest in my wax melt burner and even the postie this morning mentioned how lovely my home smelled just from me opening the door to receive a parcel so I’m ordering more ASAP to stock up!

hulahooper2 · 22/01/2021 23:49

Shearers candles are fab , and great value for money

demelza82 · 22/01/2021 23:56

St Eval consistently punch well above their weight /price point. Never had any problem with tunneling, great fragrances and have a good throw even in large rooms. I won't buy anything else now. Their reed diffuser oils are great also

amber763 · 23/01/2021 00:00

@Murmurur

My Etsy seller is Apothecary Moonchild. I see her candles are a lot more expensive than aldi etc but the wax melts last really well.
These look gorgeous! Just ordered Be Kind and Happy Soul :) Cant wait to get them!
RightOnTheEdge · 23/01/2021 00:31

This small company who are local to me sell fab candles. They smell gorgeous.
Like some PPs I've started to use their wax melts instead and they are even better.
My dad who is not normally keen on smelly things and my kids always say "Ooh it smells nice in here"
