Scented candles AIBU

Afternoon all, AIBU to think that reasonably priced scented candles that actually smell don’t exist?

I’ve had expensive ones as gifts (Jo Malone, Jo Loves, Neom etc) but can’t afford them on an ongoing basis.

I like them on in the evenings to make me feel cosy and relaxed but is there a brand that actually has a scent that you can smell once it’s burning that would require me to sell a kidney? Wink

Aldi. The Jo Malone rip offs are very good.

I have the Lime Basil in the spring, and am currently burning BlackBerry and Bay. I’ve also got the Pomegranate Noir ‘homage’ candle too.

I like the Home Bargains jar ones.

Ikea scented tealights and pillar candles are pretty good and reasonably priced too.

Personally I find wax melts much better for making the room smell nice than candles!

Asda does some really good ones, think they're called scent sational, they smell amazing and can smell them for hours after too! I also always use the maxi tea lights with them rather than the small ones as one they burn for longer and I find they give off more scent (although that could just be my imagination!)

DW Home candles at TK Maxx are fabulous, particularly the Peony Petals one.

These ones are really big for only a fiver and smell amazing. Love the look of them too, there’s a range of colours and scents.

Rituals - Ritual of Ayurverda I think it's called. Smells lovely.

Pipistrelle I did too! And just bought some more Smile

A Tesco Topaz & Amber candle is sitting on a side table half a metre from me. It is unlit and yet every so often a waft of its lovely warm scent reaches my nose.

I like bear burners. I mainly buy her wax tarts but the one candle I bought was lush, could smell it every time I walked past it even before I lit it

If it doesn't "have" to be a candle, I agree with the PP who suggested a diffuser and some good-quality essential oils or blends. If you want to get creative, you can create your own blends by using a variety of oils together at the same time.

I like the fact that they eliminate the open flame, but if you want the flickering light, maybe light a cheap unscented candle for the ambience (or use a nice LED candle).

Im a big fan of Yankee candles (an unpopular opinion on mumsnet), they have a strong smell and the big jars cost about £20 but last for ages. Its good practice to trim the wick so that it burns evenly, something i didn't used to do.

magicstar1 · 22/01/2021 15:42

I got a Woodwick candle as a birthday present two years ago. It hasn't even been lit yet, but every time I walk into our bedroom I can get the gorgeous scent from it.

Buggeredpelvicfloor2013 · 22/01/2021 15:45

I love the woodwick ones, lovely. Every year DH buys me a Jo Malone for Christmas and its only this year i've discovered there's a huge market for used jo malone candle jars and boxs! Ive got mine on ebay at the minute, started at 99p and it's up to £15! I dont understand why?!

TopTabby · 22/01/2021 15:52

B&M do good ones, I tried No 3 & No 4, they last ages & scent the room without being overpowering.
Most M&S ones are ok as well.

Home Bargains candles (Wickford and Co?) smell blooming lovely Grin

supadupapupascupa · 22/01/2021 16:31

I get Parks of London which are expensive. But I can smell them as I come into the room

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 22/01/2021 16:48

My friend swears by the Home Bargain version of Yankee Candles.

katy1213 · 22/01/2021 16:55

St Evel winter thyme - not expensive and scent lasts quite well if you let it burn for a while and then blow it out.

PenCreed · 22/01/2021 16:57

Essence of Harris - their Christmas candle is fab and I can smell faintly it when I walk into my living room even though it's only been lit once. Other ones I've had which were good were from Isle of Skye Candles and Otter Candles.

Vellichor · 22/01/2021 17:02

Home bargains have some nice big ones. The gingerbread one they sell at Christmas smells really good.

anna114young · 22/01/2021 17:04

I've used a brand called Clive's Candles and they are actually amazing!

Goneroundthetwist · 22/01/2021 17:09

I love Sand and Fog, you can get it at TKMax and Homesense. They have a good strong, nice scent.

MeowPurrGrr · 22/01/2021 17:19

Home bargains ones are bloody useless, no smell at all! I’ve been sucked into buying them a few times and regretted it! The wood wick ones are nice, they don’t smell strong but crackle nicely.

Yankee candles are always a winner, their wax melts are very strong so I can only have them burning for a hour or so.
