Ohhhh, that's creepy! Got any pets who could have stood on the remote?

CarrieMoonbeams · 18/01/2021 03:36

Eek! Where was the remote, and do you have a cat or dog who sleeps downstairs and could have sat on it?

That happened to us once, we'd gone to bed and hadn't really had the TV on much in the evening so we know it wasn't on. About 1am, we woke up to the noise of the telly - went through to the living room and a very comfy looking Ddog was sitting on the settee and must have leaned on the remote. Made me laugh (once my heart had stopped thumping) because she was watching Supervet!

RefuseTheLies · 18/01/2021 03:37

My toddler accidentally set a timer on the tv to come on at 5am. I nearly died of fright.

Prianiki · 18/01/2021 03:47

Our TV turns itself on occasionally. Apparently there's some bug in the software for that particular brand (Vizio). It has scared me more than once!

Shamefulcorners · 18/01/2021 03:53

This used to happen to our old telly - DH said it was something to do with people driving past that triggered it - I can't ask him to explain because he is snoring next to me right now! But if you live near a road , there is a logical explanation.

crumpet · 18/01/2021 04:04

One of ours used to turn itself on after a power cut.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 18/01/2021 04:28

Mine did that the other night. I was home alone snd got a real fright. I think I must have put it on pause & stand by instead of properly turning it off.

I went to turn it off rationing that anyone breaking in and stupid enough to turn the tele on would have either fled or would be easy enough to talk into leaving 🤣🤣

PhilCornwall1 · 18/01/2021 05:05

Have you got Sky?

I'm an early riser and have come down on a couple of occasions to our TV being on. I've checked when the Sky box last pulled an update (not sure if you can do this in the front end, I wrote some simple software that pulls stats from the box. I'm a geek!!) and it was a couple of hours before. So my assumption has been that the update did something to the box to trigger it. We've got HDMI CEC set up so that we can turn on the sky box and TV via the sky remote when we hit the TV Guide button.

If it's not that, the house is haunted, eeek!!!

Malin52 · 18/01/2021 05:07

Have you got Apple TV? Ours will turn itself on along with the telly when it does a bloody software update.

The TV has done weird things before as well. My mum was sleeping in our lounge and she woke to the sounds of someone speaking weird instructions from the telly. It stopped after about a minute... about as long as her heartGrin

daytriptovulcan · 18/01/2021 05:17

That's happened here tonight too. Was it Family guy, the American cartoon on at yours?
It use to do this last year every Sunday night. But if you look in the settings it's probably an alarm to start the TV to come on.

I factory rest it, and that seems to stop it...for a while.

Hailtomyteeth · 18/01/2021 05:23

Happened to me, OP. A lot. Over a period of weeks.
So I unplugged the tv. It came on again.
So I took away the aerial. It came on again.
So I took the television and put it in the back yard.
It didn't come on again. And I don't think i've had a television since.

tiredteacher100 · 18/01/2021 05:26

This happens to us if the tv is on standby and there is a power cut. When the power returns the tv comes on. We one went away for a week and accidentally left the tv on stand by, when we got home the tv was on. We asked the neighbours a and there was a power cut on day 2 of our holiday Confused

hotcrosswhat · 18/01/2021 05:28

This happened to my TV very early on Saturday morning!! It's never happened before...but it does have a habit of turning itself off the moment DH leaves the room after he's set up something to watch and then goes to get a drink etc. It doesn't do that for me Grin

Soundbyte · 18/01/2021 05:32

This used to happen to ours before we moved. Next door had a tv that was the same make as ours and when they used the remote it sometimes affected our tv too, and vice versa.

PeggyHill · 18/01/2021 05:39

It's happened to me a couple of times before. I never got to the bottom of it

CaroleFuckingBaskin · 18/01/2021 06:06

My kettle started boiling in the middle of the night. I shattered myself thinking an intruder was making himself a cuppa. Never did find out what caused it.

MildlyMiserable · 18/01/2021 06:14

This happened with my parents TV, they stopped leaving on standby and it was fine again.

custardbear · 18/01/2021 06:15

I'm another one with a post power cut telly turn on - unfortunately for the neighbours though as we were away that weekend and came home to hear a racket going on upstairs in the bedroom where they telly was - not sure how long they had to deal with all that noise 😳 but clearly I'd left it quite loud

The4ks · 18/01/2021 06:17

It does give you a fright but we've got a smart TV that's a temperamental bastard.
Just suits itself if it wants to come on when you actually want it to as well.

@hailtomyteeth your TV still went on when it was unplugged?!! Jesus christ, I'd be off!!

Pluckedpencil · 18/01/2021 06:18

Freaky. I have a smart plug on mine and when I go to bed I say goodnight to Alexa and it turns the tv off at the mains!

bumblebeessarecool · 18/01/2021 06:47

My dh's toothbrush switched itself on during the night. We were awake for a while trying to figure out who was drilling inside the house, until we realized what was going on. It started sponteneously switching itself on yesterday evening, every time I went into the bathroom. It is now downstairs in the bin. Either that or an excorsism.

Lostinthemail · 18/01/2021 06:53

My Apple TV got turned on by a neighbour trying to connect to her own a few times a week. I was in the room once and saw said neighbour’s iPhone name on my tv. Changed the settings and it didn’t happen again...

Hailtomyteeth · 18/01/2021 06:53

@The4ks

Yep. I was scared.

user7778 · 18/01/2021 07:06

Do you have Sky? Our bedroom tv has turned on multiple times in the middle of the night recently, and it was the sky box doing an update

togethelpptsd · 18/01/2021 07:09

My TV has been known to turn itself on a few times if it’s not switched off at the mains - only ever in the dead of night though! More creepily, not long ago I was trying to turn my tv in my bedroom on, pressing the button over and over and my stereo, which is a different make and has its own remote all together came blaring on. Absolutely scared the life out of me and still don’t understand what happened...
