Have you pissed off a neighbour?

My ex neighbour used to blast their telly out so they could hear it upstairs...
If you complained they’d suggest we bought them a tv for upstairs.

Imagine my joy when I tried my universal remote through their window and it worked.

Stopsniffing · 18/01/2021 07:36

Thanks everyone...
No, no pets. Remote is kept on top of fire mantelpiece, so 4ft ish off the floor. We keep it there so toddler can’t fiddle with it. It is a smart TV and we do have Sky, so perhaps it is an update thing. If we did have a power cut, out printer would do a report when that came back on again, but nothing there. Although we live in a fairly quite cul-de-sac, our living room window does look out onto road, so perhaps a passer by in their car, radio signals I guess

HeidiHoNeighbour
Don’t think we’ve peed neighbours off. We’re in a detached so unlikely noise transference, but that is a good trick if you are trying to spook someone.

My mil’s did this , apparently if the batteries are failing in the remote it can happen . Changed them and it has been fine .

Happynow001 · 18/01/2021 07:48

Try having a look at Settings to see if the programmer has accidentally been set to switch on at a certain time? I used to set my bedroom TV to turn off at a certain time at night so I didn't disturb my neighbours and on again so I woke up to the breakfast news... 🌹

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2021 07:49

We've got a smart TV and we turn it off at the wall at night as it likes to turn itself on randomly. It also turns itself off when you're watching it. I hate it.

We also used to have a kettle which boiled itself but that turned out to be a socket/electrics issue.

FrankskinnerscRoc · 18/01/2021 07:53

Mine does it frequently, it’s just a cunt having to get out of bed to turn it off. When it happened years ago & I lived on my own it was a bit Shock but I’d set the timer on it without realizing.

cushioncovers · 18/01/2021 08:12

Mine did this once somehow we had set a timer for it to come on and go off after certain amounts of time. Scared the absolute shit out of me as the volume was really loud when it switched on.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 18/01/2021 08:14

Ours does it all the time, switches channels and stuff. Thought it was an old remote with stuck buttons. New remote, still does it. Doesn’t feel in the least bit creepy at all.

pelosi · 18/01/2021 08:19

Our TV is crazy at the money, volume keeps going mute and then to loud, the frequency changer comes on, the menu bar shows up itself. It looks possessed!

We know it’s on the brink of dying.

Looking to move house this year so don’t want to buy until we’re in the new house.

IamGateshead · 18/01/2021 08:21

Has someone recently passed over? I'm asking this because it's well known that departing souls omit energy that can cause something like this to happen.
Why not ask your neighbours if there has been a death recently? I'd be interested to know.

Topseyt · 18/01/2021 09:48

Our big living room TV used to do weird stuff if someone else in the house was using Bluetooth for any reason. I would be sprawling in my armchair in the evening and suddenly anything I was watching was either switched off or replaced by whatever game or film DD2 and/or DH were on at the time.

The number of times I bellowed at both of them to stop switching my stuff off from upstairs!!! It became a family joke.

We seemed to sort it, although not entirely sure how. It didn't seem to matter who had Bluetooth enabled or turned off. Hasn't happened for a long time now.

SoupDragon · 18/01/2021 09:51

It really isn't.

Backtoschool101 · 18/01/2021 10:04

Clearly the machines are starting to work against us OP. Just wait.. Grin

Tiny2222 · 18/01/2021 10:12

Ghost 100%!!

Speedyspunker · 18/01/2021 10:17

They're here...

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2021 13:44

Can you imagine banging on the neighbour's door during a pandemic and saying "has anybody died in here because it's messing with my telly?"

Given the common issues people are describing with the exact same phenomenon and a scientific and demonstrable explanation, I think it's unlikely that it's anything as woolly as a departing soul.

ShowOfHands · 18/01/2021 13:46

In fact, banging on the door and saying "has somebody died because it's messing with my telly and a stranger on the Internet wants to know".

AnnaFiveTowns · 18/01/2021 13:56

Ours has done this a few times. I think we'd accidentally set the timer for it to come on ir it was some kind of glitch. It is creepy if it's in the middle of the night - even though I dont believe in any of that woo stuff.

Nodancingshoes · 18/01/2021 14:02

Ours has done that a few times - I googled it and apparently its something to do with the sensitivity of the on/off switch and nothing spooky. That's what I'm holding onto anyway....😂😂😂

CounsellorTroi · 18/01/2021 14:11

@tiredteacher100

This happens to us if the tv is on standby and there is a power cut. When the power returns the tv comes on. We one went away for a week and accidentally left the tv on stand by, when we got home the tv was on. We asked the neighbours a and there was a power cut on day 2 of our holiday Confused
Strange it didn't go back into standby! Our TV will do this if there has been nothing done like changing the channel or something. A warning comes up on the screen and you have to press ok to keep it on.
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 18/01/2021 14:16

the case of the not so smart tv

Slackarse · 18/01/2021 14:21

Has happened to me too. And a couple of weeks ago at night I turned the tv off. 5 min later it turned itself on again. Turned it off again, only for it to turn itself on a minute later. Did this about 10 times. Still don’t know what happened. It was creepy.

Stopsniffing · 18/01/2021 15:43

Well.. if it was a ghost(?!) I wish they would do something useful, rather than watching nonsense tv!

Spooky! I think something like this happened to me when I was little. I will ask my mum as I can't fully remember.
