Hygiene and supermarket trolleys

I would like the government to make it law to stop children standing or sitting in supermarket trolleys, this is very unhygienic.Children step in all sorts, dog poo, spit, vomit and then with their grubby feet stand in a trolley, at times when I see this I want to say get your child out of the trolley, it really gets on my nerves, anyone else agree, especially with Covid 19 rife.

I hate it too. You wouldn't put your own dirty shoes in a trolley where people put their food so why do people think their child's shoes are any different?

WorraLiberty · 09/01/2021 17:50

Blimey, this subject's a blast from the past Shock Grin

Just bring your Dettol wipes and try not to eat unwrapped food straight from your trolley.

Job's a goodun

CherryRoulade · 09/01/2021 17:51

Yes old enough to stand in a trolley means old enough to walk beside one and behave.

Bvop · 09/01/2021 17:51

I think the Government might be rather busy at the moment.

HermioneWeasley · 09/01/2021 17:51

It is unpleasant, but I don’t know anyone who has got ill from touching shopping that’s been in a trolley contaminated by toddler shoes. Making it illegal is ridiculous

101jobs · 09/01/2021 17:52

YANBU. I couldn’t agree with you more OP

AldiIsla · 09/01/2021 17:52

Lol. Shaz.

MrsR87 · 09/01/2021 17:53

I agree that it’s gross and don’t like to see it. However, making it against the law seems a bit extreme.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 09/01/2021 17:53

I think there are bigger issues out there right now. If you're that bothered, use bags fir life in your trolley. If you saw hiw/where trollers are stored and what runs around on them pees on them & worse... kids shoes would be the least if your worries.

LouiseTrees · 09/01/2021 17:53

So a single mother with a 18 month old is meant to either put her back out with a papoose, drag a child kicking and screaming or push a trolley with one hand a buggy with another? Why have trolleys with a seat part of you can’t use the seat part? I think the trolleys need to be wiped down and the kid shouldn’t have food in the trolley and their shoes be wiped down. I assume you mean in the main part of the trolley though. In that case, when referring to the food part I agree that kids should not be in there.

Markies · 09/01/2021 17:53

Illegal - get a grip of yourself.

Ponoka7 · 09/01/2021 17:54

What would be the penalty for this? How would it be handled by security in front of the child? I've seen security guards go for easy options, while leaving aggressive teenagers to do damage and drunks to still get served with alcohol.

So I wouldn't support this. It always seems to be families who are targeted. I'm particularly pissed off because again a man who had child abuse images, including eight year olds being raped, has walked free from court. So the justice system can fuck off.

olderthanyouthink · 09/01/2021 17:56

I had to tell DP not to put DD in a trolley, he himself had literally just stepped in dog poo.

The ones with seats are fine just not it the main food area

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 09/01/2021 17:57

I don't know anyone who has got ill from leaving dog shit on the pavement but its still disgusting and antisocial. A lot of people don't know anyone who has had covid either and yet still they are dropping like flys. The I don't know anyone argument is ridiculous.

Madmoxxi · 09/01/2021 17:58

Just buy your own trolley. Or those bags you can put the groceries straight into on the trolley? Or better yet, isolate yourself in a bubble for the rest of time.

namechangetheworld · 09/01/2021 18:04

I try not to take both of mine to the supermarket at the moment, but when I have to the five year old sits in the trolley because she doesn't fit in the seat next to the youngest. I think that's preferable to her walking next to the trolley and taking up room in the aisle (making social distancing impossible) and/or touching things on the shelves when I'm not looking and spreading/picking up germs.

Who on earth is eating unwashed food that has been touching the trolley anyway?

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 09/01/2021 18:06

Making it illegal... 🤭

Amanduh · 09/01/2021 18:08

How ridiculous. You know that birds poo and wee all over them as well as rats and they get rained on?!
When I have the baby and the toddler and a shop only has single seat trolleys, the baby goes in the seat and the toddler sits in the main part. His shoes are no dirtier than anything else that’s touching those trolleys!

1Morewineplease · 09/01/2021 18:14

I'd like it to be a law to stop children from sitting or standing in a normal shopping trolley.
I once witnessed a trolley overturn by a child standing in one. It was horrible... particularly as a tiny baby was strapped into the baby bit.
I still remember the screaming.

BackforGood · 09/01/2021 18:18

YAB Ridiculous.

This ^

Plus, what food products are you putting in your trolley, that aren't wrapped / in a tin / bottle /box / their own peel, that you don't wash before eating ? Confused

IfTheSockFits · 09/01/2021 18:20

Trolleys are for food, not your kid's shoes/arse.

sortmylifeoutplease · 09/01/2021 18:22

Wouldn't bother me. Everything is packaged and stuff like fruit that isn't will be washed when home anyway. Do you think there are no vermin in warehouses etc?! It's hell going shopping with little ones and it seems a small thing. I didn't do this but wouldn't judge a parent for doing so either.

feathermucker · 09/01/2021 18:24

Of all the things that could or should be made illegal, this has to rate as one of the funniest suggestions.

BeyondMyWits · 09/01/2021 18:28

Do you know how much bacteria is on the outside of fresh chicken packaging - 10%+ on a spot check in our local supermarket last year....

Mucky feet are not the biggest problem in the trolley.

Lancrelady80 · 09/01/2021 18:32

Well how ridiculous! I agree children standing in a trolley is not particularly safe, and thinking about it you may have a point about shoes....but illegal?! Come on!
