Hygiene and supermarket trolleys

I would like the government to make it law to stop children standing or sitting in supermarket trolleys, this is very unhygienic.Children step in all sorts, dog poo, spit, vomit and then with their grubby feet stand in a trolley, at times when I see this I want to say get your child out of the trolley, it really gets on my nerves, anyone else agree, especially with Covid 19 rife.

Goods are packaged*

Happylittlethoughts · 10/01/2021 07:53

I would sincerely hope my Government has more important things to do than formulate laws about this . For actual fuck sake 🙈

Subeccoo · 10/01/2021 08:46

I took my very very active dgd (17 mths) shopping just before Christmas. She got straight out of the seat. I popped her in the main bit and thankfully she was fine.
Unless I've totally forgotten how to parent, I didn't have a great deal of choice, she is far too strong willed to have a screaming battle in a supermarket, far too young to properly explain the situation too. Far too fast for me to have her walk next to me and not touch everything on the shelves or get knocked over by people who won't see her cos she's yknow a baby. Am I supposed to hold her hand while steering a large trolley?
Nah. She was happy in the main bit and we managed the shop.
Jesus.

CherryRoulade · 10/01/2021 09:13

I recall we used a harness on them to keep them safely in a trolley seat until they were old enough to do as they were told.

Musicaldilemma · 10/01/2021 09:17

I don’t agree. A small child running around in a busy supermarket, not socially distancing, whilst a parent tries to shop might be better off sitting in a trolley.

Babyfg · 10/01/2021 10:39

When my two were under two I could count on my hands how many times I was able to get a trolley with two seats. The elder one went in the main trolley sitting on the baby bag and the younger one in the seat. Really don't care what people thought. I needed to get food and keep my two contained.....if any thing we gave cranks like you something to complain about so you're welcome 😘 you'd be complaining just as viscously if my 18 month old was running amok in the store!

Get a grip there's so many bad things out there this is such a non point

WitchQueenofDarkness · 10/01/2021 10:41

Quick scan and pack into your own bags as you shop.

Problem solved

DanielRicciardosSmile · 10/01/2021 10:42

Illegal? What would you like the penalty to be? Fine? Community service? Perhaps a prison sentence?

user1471523870 · 10/01/2021 10:53

I agree in principle, however I really don't think shoes add any germs to the trolley. I have been using trolleys with a clear understanding they are filthy anyway, so I am not really bothered or disgusted by the scene of a child sitting in them.
But I am the mother of a toddler, so my disgust threshold is pretty high at the moment! And no, my child doesn't sit/stand in a supermarket trolley (just because I don't go to supermarkets myself, preferring online shopping).

GintyMcGinty · 10/01/2021 11:10

I don't think kids should be in trolleys.

But I don't want the government to make it a law.

They've got better things to do than legally enforceable manners and they are involved enough in our lives just now.

Rosebel · 10/01/2021 11:48

I also wince when I see this but more because I worry about the trolley toppling over. Seen it more than once, usually because the child is stood up and reaching over the side of the trolley.
Don't bother say anything because parents just tell you to fuck off and if they want to spend the weekend at A&E it's up to them.
From a hygiene point don't really care. As has been said worse things run over your trolley at night.

CounsellorTroi · 10/01/2021 11:54

Some people use the trolleys as litter bins too. Sometimes it’s hard to find one without rubbish in it.

ComDummings · 10/01/2021 11:58

Have you seen the rats in supermarket car parks overnight? They climb over the trollers to dig through any rubbish left in them (why is there always rubbish in trollies?) Kids shoes are the least of your worries Envy not envy

ComDummings · 10/01/2021 11:59

Trollies*

AlwaysLatte · 10/01/2021 11:59

I would rather see a child safely sitting in the trolley seat than toddling around the store. Up to a certain age of course.

Topseyt · 10/01/2021 12:03

Illegal! Nah. No need for that. Just douse the kids in antibacterial spray. Job done! 😎

Or get a large heavy chain and huge padlocks and lock them into the seat. Make sure you lose the key on the way round so that you have to get staff to bring out bolt croppers to release your child from the seat!

Seriously though, I had reins which had special loops with buckles on which were for securing children into such seats. I just used those for as long as possible.

BackforGood · 10/01/2021 15:53

@Subeccoo When my dc were little, if the supermarket trolley didn't have a strap to fasten them in with, I used their reins.

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles

Grin Excellent idea

@WitchQueenofDarkness - that facility isn't available in most places. In fact, nowhere in the 8 nearest supermarkets I can think of nearest to me

Isitbedtimeyet4 · 10/01/2021 16:19

I’ve got three under 2.5 and if I need to shop alone one has to be in the trolley. If you honestly thought the trolleys were clean in the first place then you might want to rethink. I antibac the entire thing before I put my children in because even adults touching it could have all manner of horrible things on them Hmm

Just clean it first like the rest of us OP.

MissMarpleDarling · 10/01/2021 17:29

YABU shopping with kids is not fun. Sometimes putting them in the trolley like a mini prison is the only way to get through the experience.

teenagetantrums · 10/01/2021 20:23

I have worked in 3 different supermarkets. Rats and birds spend all night on the trolleys plus all the rats and mice in the actual store. Just don't put things without packaging in the trolley sorted.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 10/01/2021 20:25

@Bvop

I think the Government might be rather busy at the moment.

I get what you're saying, but... they really aren't Grin
Sloelydoesit · 10/01/2021 20:35

I will never forget hearing the sound of a small boy's head hitting the hard supermarket floor when a trolley toppled over a few years ago. Made me feel sick to the attach and I've often worried about what happened ever since. My help wasn't needed at the time, staff and others were there btw,

Illegal? Probably not a law that could be passed however more awareness of the dangers in store should be posted up

Bookworming · 11/01/2021 07:43

@Bvop that comment actually made me lol! Thank you for cheering my morning.

OP I agree with @Bvop!
