To think my employer has got my holiday wrong?

I’ll try to keep this brief. I work 2.5 days spread over 5 days (so 5 half days per week). Full time employees are entitled to 30 days holiday, I am therefore entitled to 15. I assumed then if I was to book a ‘day off’ (my working day) I would be booking a half day off. For a better example:

A full time employee with 30 days holiday wants to take 2 weeks off they use 10 days leaving them 20 days , you would take 5 days from your 15 leaving you with 10

However my employer is saying I would have to book FULL days off - so I’d need to book 10 days for those 2 weeks and not 5! I’ve never known this to be the case anywhere I’ve ever worked before but I can’t find solid proof anywhere online.

Help?!

You should get the same amount of 'days' as others working 5 days i.e. 30 days. The only difference is that your 'day off' is a smaller amount of hours than their day off.

You are entitled to 30 half days. So if you take 2 weeks off, you will have used 10 half days of holiday.
So you are paid the same for those 2 weeks as if you had been at work. I suppose you could ask for 5 days holiday (taken over 2 weeks).

So your employer is right in the way they would deduct holidays but is wrong in the amount of days holiday they have given you in the first place as you should have 30 of your ½ days not 15 days

You're entitled to 30 half days. They're calculating it wrong. They're counting your working day as a half day to calculate your holiday entitlement, then counting your working day as a full day to calculate your holiday use. So you're getting half as many half-days off as your colleagues.

PPs are correct, you are entitled to 30 days holiday but your 1 day holiday is paid at half a day whereas a full timer gets paid a full day holiday.

Proof is on the internet somewhere, I remember googling like mad when I was moving to part time!

If your employer wants you to take full days then you need to be allocated 30 days too. Have you seen your holiday allocation written down anywhere?

There's an online annual calculator on the gov.uk website where you can put in what you work etc and it tells you how many hours you're entitled to rather than just days.

I did this as I work 16 hours a week over 4 days.

Its about the number of days you are in the workplace not the hours you do each day so if your are in 5 days per week you get the same amount of holiday days as other people working 5 days per week I.e. 30. When you take a holiday your day is just shorter than a day that a full time person would get.

Your employer is wrong.

You day consists of half the hours of a full time employee. You only have to book off the time you will be deproving them of your services... those half hours!

You and they an use the government's holiday calculator to work it out

Work it in hours, not 'days'.

Your employer gives every staff member 30 times their average daily hours per year as Leave.

Full time employees get 30 x full day.

You get 30 x half day.

Someone genuinely working 3 out of five gets (hours+hours+hours+0+0)/5 to get their 'average' and then that times 30.

It all nets out to the same amount of 'time' off in practice, which is 6 weeks.

You definitely shouldn't be having to use up hours on non-working hours!

As she works 5 days with the same hours each day it's perfectly easy to work it out in days. No need to do it in hours

Tell your employer you'll just take the mornings off, and will work as you usually do in the afternoon!

If you work every day but reduced hours then easier to Express your holidays in days not hours. You would have the same amount of holidays as a full time staff member. When you book a day off it is one of your days rather than a standard length one.

I had a part time math lecturer go and tell HR precisely that!

HR couldn't get their head round a new system... or the precise notes my colleague had sent. It caused chaos for a while!

Have you checked your holiday entitlement with HR?
When I worked 5 days part time I had the full holiday allowance but my days weren’t full days, they were my shorter days. I can’t see that you’ve checked your allowance with your employer, I can only see you’ve assumed you get half. Sorry if that’s not the case.

My manager is in HR and that is what she is telling me which is why it’s so baffling. I just want it written somewhere in black and white to bring back to them. My contract says I’m entitled to 30 hours holiday pro rata. It doesn’t specify how and when I take it.

Your manager is clearly wrong. 30days pro rata is 30 1/2 days for you. Therefore 10 half days for a fortnight off.

When it asks for days worked its asking for the number of days you are physically at work which is 5 (not what all your ½ days add up to).

Most part timers book hours, so if you work 3 hours each day its 3 hours off your holiday in hours.
