Michael Jackson, veto?

It's up to you to decide whether you think MJ is a pedo or not, everyone is entitled to come to their own conclusion... but I think he was guilty and it's kind of ruined his music for me.

I won't storm out of a restaurant if one of his songs comes on! but I won't play his music myself because I can't separate his music from how disgusted I am by him.

That being said, for those that do believe he is guilty do you now veto playing his music? Has it ruined his music for you too? Or have you found a way to compartmentalise your feelings about it?

Side note: I understand not everyone thinks he's guilty, that's fine! Completely up to you to decide what you think. Not here to judge, just to hear other people's feelings.

Its a personal decision. But i am with you.

Kljnmw3459 · 02/01/2021 22:01

I feel the same as you OP. He wasn't found guilty by a court of law but his behaviour with children was creepy enough. I don't listen to his music anymore and will turn the radio off if his song comes on but I'm also aware that plenty of other people still enjoy his songs. I won't hold it against anyone, everyone can decide for themselves.

There are of course other problematic artists as well so MJ isn't unique in that regard.

Janonomouse · 02/01/2021 22:03

Guilty, never liked his music anyway but raise an eyebrow when I hear it played.

grassisjeweled · 02/01/2021 22:05

I still play his music

EwwwwDavid · 02/01/2021 22:06

I'm the same. Still have some of his songs on my playlists and I always skip them!

RozHuntleysStump · 02/01/2021 22:08

I still play his music.

pictish · 02/01/2021 22:09

Wasn’t a fan in the first place but I certainly can’t hear his grunts and squeaks now, the revolting thing. Straight for the off button.

Justcallmebebes · 02/01/2021 22:15

He was weird but his music is brilliant. He was never convicted but still v v dodgy

InkyPinkyPonky95 · 02/01/2021 22:17

@TillysMum02 ... There are many many many many other artists ... you can't seriously be asking me to write you a list?

This is just another thread about eradicating / re-writing history. pulling down statues, condemning what has happened in the past - we can learn a lot from history where we decide to base our - personal - current judgements - positive or negative. Have you - OP - looked at his upbringing? A person developes within the culture he is brought up in.

Theunamedcat · 02/01/2021 22:20

I know where your coming from I listen to a couple now and then when I'm feeling particularly nostalgic but its spoiled for me now

Grapewrath · 02/01/2021 22:22

I won’t listen to MJ anymore. The music gives me the creeps these days.

Lookslikerainted · 02/01/2021 22:23

I won’t storm out if a restaurant like you but I will and do walk off the dance floor, I change the radio station and don’t play his music.

covidaintacrime · 02/01/2021 22:24

I play his music sometimes. I used to be firmly in the camp of "never listening to artists who have done horrible things" but I think new information comes to light about people all the time and it's very disappointing. I tend to just separate art from the artist, and treat it as a separate thing.

I know that's indirectly supporting them (which I feel guilty about) but I also like to think it's also supporting producers / writers / band members etc who aren't shitty people.

Starlightstarbright1 · 02/01/2021 22:24

Yes. I find it uncomfortable listening now.

That's a bit extreme. I can assure you I've never torn a statue down. I'm really just saying that my opinion of him changed, which has influenced my appreciation for his work. I have read around his life and understand certain things can affect the decisions people make later in life, but personally for me I don't count that justification for what I think he is guilty of. I'm really just looking to see how comparable my opinions are to other people's.

Wouldn't listen to him.

I don't know much about his upbringing, but I don't believe that damage inflicted in childhood reduces your accountability for the damage you inflict on others in adulthood.

InkyPinkyPonky95 · 02/01/2021 22:30

@covidaintacrime really good point about producers and writers etc.

Mummadeeze · 02/01/2021 22:33

Feel uncomfortable listening to him too but sometimes can’t avoid it. It is such a tricky issue to be honest. His music is so mainstream, it inevitably pops up from time to time. But I won’t actively select it.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 02/01/2021 22:35

I was never a fan of his solo work, so wouldn't choose to listen to it in any case, but definitely would stop dancing if it came on - and have felt that way since the early 90s.

Oddly though, I'm kind of ok with the Jackson 5 songs. Perhaps that's because it was 'before' the rumours started? I don't know, and am aware that it doesn't make sense.
