People staring....why?

Today DP and I went to get a McDonalds, and the carpark was full so had to park at the hotel next door where loads of people were doing the same.

Afterwards, I reversed out the carpark slowly due to the ice and drove out slowly looking for the exit. The whole time this was happening, a couple in a nearby car to the exit were staring at us. Not just casually watching, as in windows down, eyes following us, mouths pretty much hanging open to the point I almost stopped the car to get out and check something wasnt amiss. DP and I arent confrontational people, but we did stare back incase they were trying to tell us something. No, they said something to each other and carried on staring.

Now this made me feel a bit paranoid, that something was wrong with the car or my driving. DP wasnt bothered but I just thought it was plain rude.

Does anyone else feel unnerved when things like this happen or does anyone who is a 'stare-er' know why they do it?

They probably said to each other “ Why are that couple staring at us?”

ProfMcGonigle · 01/01/2021 16:00

Maybe they owned the car park you were in and were annoyed that you had parked there when you weren't a customer of theirs?

It's the only think I can think of, unless there's something you're not telling us - we're you naked? dressed as clowns? something weird?

Bluebird2021 · 01/01/2021 16:03

maybe you looked like someone they know?

DilemmaADay · 01/01/2021 16:06

@ProfMcGonigle I though that too but one of then had a McDonalds drink in their hand so were doing the same.... definitely not naked though or dressed like clowns Grin

ProfMcGonigle · 01/01/2021 16:07

I'd have just blown a kiss then Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/01/2021 16:12

Maybe they were at awe at someone who can simultaneously stare at someone, drive AND look for exit

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/01/2021 16:13

Joking aside. Is it possible you had something on your car?

blazinglightonthehill · 01/01/2021 16:13

Did you drop some rubbish?

I stare at litter bugs Grin

emmetgirl · 01/01/2021 16:14

Maybe you're just really good looking

HeddaGarbled · 01/01/2021 16:15

Their TV isn’t working?

Woodlandbelle · 01/01/2021 16:16

My dh would have rolled down and window and said 'how are you doing long time no see'

Or a big bellowing happy new year could have worked

Fairyliz · 01/01/2021 16:16

I sometimes aimlessly stare at people I must look really gormless.

I'm not really looking just daydreaming.

DamnShesaSexyChick · 01/01/2021 16:18

I don’t know why people are making silly excuses for them, I hate people who stare. When I went for my covid test the couple in the next car stared at me the entire time with their mouths hanging open, I really didn’t feel well and when my test was finished I turned to them and shouted stop fucking staring at me.

Cheeseandwin5 · 01/01/2021 16:18

I am sure you both looked fabulous and they were just love struck.
I wouldnt let it bother you, they may not have been staring at you but your car, or they may just have looking in your direction and not noticed you at all.
Whatever the reason, you cant really do anything about it so no point wasting your time

KatherineJaneway · 01/01/2021 16:20

If you were noticing them staring at you that much, you must have been staring back.

TheSilentStars · 01/01/2021 16:20

The whole time you were carefully reversing etc you managed to notice them staring?
Perhaps they were concerned you were going to crash into them as you were looking at them rather than where you were going?

JimmyTheWeed · 01/01/2021 16:20

I have noticed over the last couple of years that people seem to blatantly stare at me! Makes me feel very uncomfortable. Maybe I'm just oversensitive? Or are people becoming more rude? My DM used to say that they don't realise that they are doing it,but when you return their stare and they still keep doing it,I don't know if that's true.

Aubergina · 01/01/2021 16:21

Maybe they mistook you for a celebrity

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 01/01/2021 16:21

Maybe they fancied you and discussed a potential threesome.
Maybe they like your car.
Maybe you're a doppelganger of a family member of theirs.
Maybe they're just weirdos

SchrodingersImmigrant · 01/01/2021 16:22

Same. I stare into nothing and sometimes someone happens to move there. It could be (and it actually was once) my best friend and I wouldn't know.😂 So many times I was told "I saw you looking at me in the bus" "What?"😂
WhatTiggersDoBest · 01/01/2021 16:24

I wave at people without smiling when they are staring.

AllesAusLiebe · 01/01/2021 16:24

I stare. I wish I didn't, but I always find myself staring. I'm not a rude person and I certainly don't stare because I want to make others feel uncomfortable. When I catch myself doing it, I stop.

In this situation, I think they were assessing your driving. I probably would've watched as well, but my husband would also have told me to knock it off. Weird that they were both staring.

DilemmaADay · 01/01/2021 16:25

Some of these responses have made me smile Smile and laugh!!

Oh @DamnShesaSexyChick that's so rude!! What did you say when you called them out? I never understand people who clock that you've noticed them staring carry on staring...

TheSilentStars - Dp noticed them staring and as I was driving towards the exit, I noticed them there like two nodding dogs. I said to DP "why are they staring" and he mentioned he noticed them when we were reversing earlier

With many forms of entertainment and recreation not available at present, maybe they’ve hit on watching people drive round icy car parks as a pastime. You were probably the highlight of their day, what with reversing and all.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 01/01/2021 16:26

I’ve had this a couple of times. I can only think it’s my height (5 ft 11) - although a couple of times I’ve had to check if I had food on my face Grin

Someone once accused me of staring at her (in a very confrontational way too). I just didn’t have my glasses on and was probably peering a bit because I couldn’t see properly.
