AIBU to be disappointed in Bridgerton?

I love costume dramas and was excited when I heard there was a new one on Netflix. But it’s awful! I can’t watch it- the costumes, the dialogue, the plot are all completely implausible and unconvincing. Anyone else feel the same?

I really enjoyed it (hence my username Wink)

I agree some of the dialogue and story lines were hit and miss but as light entertainment I thought it was good!

Stripesnomore · 30/12/2020 02:14

The whole thing was utterly bonkers.

The whole withdrawal method as massive plot point was ludicrous.

The only bit I found completely repulsive to the level of Twilight was when he was promising to do the alphabetical naming thing at the end.

It was just a car crash of utter nonsense, but I would watch another series.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 30/12/2020 02:17

It was totally ridiculous but wonderfully entertaining. I loved it.

I had to roll my eyes at taking a respectable lady to a sordid boxing match, but wth, It was all fiction.

Terracottasaur · 30/12/2020 02:18

It’s not really a costume drama in the conventional sense! I can see why it’s a disappointment if you were hoping for an Austen style drama.

mayandjuniper · 30/12/2020 02:20

YABU- I loved it! I don't think it's meant to be massively plausible or historically accurate.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 30/12/2020 02:20

I got 5 minutes in and had to turn it off, the acting was awful and it was just too much like a drama school production. We loved Downton and The Crown etc and I love a Jane Austen as much as the next woman - no strangers to a historical costume drama - but DP commented “I don’t think this is for us darling”

Sparklesocks · 30/12/2020 02:21

I enjoyed it, but I knew it would be trashy going in and sort of expected that - a bit of escapist fluff (even compared to other light period dramas it was very fluffy!). I’m quite into nonsense telly though, just something to switch the brain off with.

MarieVanGoethem · 30/12/2020 02:37

I mean, it’s not as out there as Reign, but if you’re pained by anachronisms there will be an awful lot of wincing...

As for the thoroughly crass handling of the theory that’s been posited regarding Queen Charlotte potentially being of African descent Hmm I practically cringed myself inside out at it all - and of course FAR too many people will absolutely believe that yes, yes, George III married a black woman. (And by extension, that British society was super-equal & non-racist; and THAT’s why the slave trade was abolished in 1807 - & slavery had never been legal in England itself... Hmm )

KEA321 · 30/12/2020 02:56

I am currently on episode 7. I alternate between being annoyed and being amused. I think I will go for amused overall. It's silly but it is making me smile.

grassisjeweled · 30/12/2020 02:58

Watching it now. It's fairly stupid but nowt else on

TTCAbroad · 30/12/2020 02:58

Have you read the books?

Given that they have retained the spirit of the books (historically inaccurate bodice rippers) I was not disappointed at all. I can see how people who haven't read the books and expected something a little classier, and with a good plot, could be disappointed.

Athrawes · 30/12/2020 03:06

It is utterly brain rotting, but rather marvelous!

Sparrowfeeder · 30/12/2020 03:25

Loved it! Rather attractive men don’t hurt the show’s appeal...

DramaAlpaca · 30/12/2020 03:25

I'm a bit of a stickler for historical accuracy most of the time but I didn't care. It was bloody wonderful. I've just finished it and am bereft

Doingtheboxerbeat · 30/12/2020 03:33

After 10 minutes i was getting a very strong Hollyoaks vibe so I have thrown it back into the sea . Might revisit later when I'm in the mood - this usually works.

FlyingByTheSeatof · 30/12/2020 03:38

Well I thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next series.

Aberforthsgoat · 30/12/2020 03:54

YABU purely due to the Duke of Hastings. How can you turn that off! Grin

ZaraW · 30/12/2020 04:02

Loved it. Hope there's a second series.

MadameMonk · 30/12/2020 04:17

It’s certainly given me a new deeper appreciation of the writing talents of the ‘real authors’ in this genre. Some screenwriter team is just playing Bodice Ripper Regency Bingo with this one.

Lucky the payoffs are still fair as regards frockage, interior designs and gardens. Got it over the line for me. Just.

GoingForASwim · 30/12/2020 04:25

First ep certainly had promise. I’m up to 4th ep now and am finding it’s dragging a bit, the silly plot line is becoming more laboured. Jane Austen it’s not but I’ll probably get around to watching the rest at some point. 6.5/10.

SD1978 · 30/12/2020 04:48

It wasn't great, more comedic than I'd hoped. It did the job of banal entertainment.

winterbabythistime · 30/12/2020 05:00

It's silly but entertaining enough. There's bugger all else to watch tbh.

Maudythebudgie · 30/12/2020 05:28

I can see why people would be disappointed if they were expecting authentic period drama, but I loved it because it wasn't! Loved the diverse cast, music, the costumes and sets. I didn't have to concentrate to watch and it was all visually delicious. Just what I needed at this time.

WhatIsAWeekday · 30/12/2020 05:30

It's rubbish but I'm enjoying it. Still surprised it's a Shondaland production (Shonda Rhimes).

I'm on episode 3. The Duke is a beautiful man! Love Lady Danbury and Lady Bridgerton (I think she's called - Daphne's mum).

Here for the 'diversity' bunfight though 😉

Yes.

Completely bizarre, but of course entertaining. I felt mildly besmirched by it, though.

The bit that repulsed me was the soft porn/virgin awakening bit. I think I've been traumatised by that. Just glad my mum wasn't sitting next to me on the sofa for a 'nice' period drama ...
