I love costume dramas and was excited when I heard there was a new one on Netflix. But it’s awful! I can’t watch it- the costumes, the dialogue, the plot are all completely implausible and unconvincing. Anyone else feel the same?

Totally love it - finishing the series to-day. Pure escapism. I adored the architecture - DD and I were saying we would have loved to have lived there (but not in that time with no rights and no central heating Grin). And as DSis said - only if you were Upper Class. (and even then...).

I loved the girl from Derry Girls and the younger sister - way more interesting than Daphne. Also, I didn't think the actress was stunning enough to be "the diamond of the season" but there were no really beautiful female stars, unlike the male cast.

It was fun and frivolous - but then we love Gossip Girl, Selling Sunset and Jane Austen Wink

MoChridhe · 30/12/2020 11:57

I absolutely loved it. It's my type of thing. I hate detective shows , super hero, murder mystery etc. I only love romantic dramas and romance books. I am looking forward to season 2.

WhatIsAWeekday · 30/12/2020 12:06

Also, I didn't think the actress was stunning enough to be "the diamond of the season" but there were no really beautiful female stars, unlike the male cast.

Exactly! I said the same.

ForestYeti · 30/12/2020 12:15

I lost interest before the end of the first episode

knittingaddict · 30/12/2020 12:49

@coldwaterfeed

Why shouldn't race be mentioned? People keep saying this but not explaining why.
Others may have a different opinion, but for me it was too clunky. There didn't need to be an explanation of why certain characters were black and I would have preferred it if they were just allowed to be black rather than shoe horn in a clumsy reason why they were black.

The recent film of David Copperfield had a mix of races and made no logical sense, but worked perfectly. At least it did to me.

madmumofteens · 30/12/2020 12:50

Fluff and nonsense I absolutely loved it just escapism in these miserable times Smile

Elfinghecking · 30/12/2020 12:58

sorry, we bloody love it! yes it's a bit ridiculous in parts, and we saw far too much of the Dukes' arse than would have liked but it's so beautifully over the top. I mean, every single male on the show would have syphilis if they all carried on like that in real life and the women shouldn't touch any of them with a barge pole but it's not supposed to be historical fact...

Ultimateblends · 30/12/2020 13:20

Oh its exactly how its meant to be, cheese with extra Stilton on top, and a chunk of brie as a side dish.

Throughly entertaining and not at all to be taken seriously, I mean the use of pop music in classical parts is enough to give away the fact its not meant to be taken seriously

NewlyGranny · 30/12/2020 13:20

Tacky. I have paused it halfway through episode 1 but I will go back.

I'm fine with the colourblind casting - suspension of disbelief is the reader/viewer's job, after all - but I was annoyed that the writers and editors had clearly not understood the subtle differences between will and shall!

Butchyrestingface · 30/12/2020 13:29

I watched it for the view...

... of the Duke of Hastings. I'd watch him read the Tory Party Conference Executive Summary.

😍😍😍

JADS · 30/12/2020 13:32

I haven't binge watched anything in a while and I finished this on Boxing Day! It wasn't in anyway historically accurate, but it was very colourful and easy to watch. Poor Pen having to wear those hideous yellow dresses!

I knew nothing about it previously, but as the series wore on, you could tell that they are gearing up to do the other siblings stories. Excited to see what happens to the 3 boys and Eloise. Can anyone explain why Anthony was such a dick to Daphne's suitors in the first episodes?

longwayoff · 30/12/2020 13:35

I have to say, when it comes to casting the Duke, they knew what they were doing. Imagine meeting him on the staircase. It's enough to make one rattle one's fan.

winewolfhowls · 30/12/2020 13:44

It was fun and easy watching. I loved pen!

AnneElliott · 30/12/2020 13:46

I liked it but I wasn't expecting Jane Austen. It's clearly not meant to be historical- no one surely thinks there were lots of black people in the British Aristocracy? But taking it for a drama I liked it. Agree there about the sex thing though - I wouldn't want to watch it with my mother! And on the plot - I was convinced the Duke was actually a woman and had been raised a boy as his father needed an heir. Was disappointed that it was just he didn't want kids!!

What's more annoying for me is when they take an Austen book and add arc into it ( Billie Piper as Fanny I'm looking at you). That really annoys me.

PuppyMonkey · 30/12/2020 13:47

The Duke is easy on the eye, I suppose, but tbh that doesn't make up for his atrocious acting in this.

HazelBite · 30/12/2020 13:55

Lovely, pure escapism, and as for the Duke of Hastings mmmm

singsingbluesilver · 30/12/2020 14:07

@JADS Anthony became head of the family when his father died tragically young, before the birth of the youngest sibling, Hyacinth. As a result he had to take on a huge amount of responsibility and was certainly a father figure to the youngest two

Anthony never feels that he lived up his father - he idolisies him as a perfect figure - this is why the watch is so important to him - a reminder to do his very best to do his duty to his family. I think thi is why he is so hard on the suitors - he is acting as head of the household and just does not feel that any of them are good enough for his sister.

@Annasgirl the exteriors are shot in Bath, you should take DD there for the weekend - I think you'd both love it going on what you've said. They quite often have regency festivally things on with people just walking around in costume, it's brilliant.

This made me snort. Smile What a beautiful beautiful man.

@singsingbluesilver

Thank you! Makes more sense.

EyesOfABlueDog · 30/12/2020 19:03

Watch Harlots

SleepingStandingUp · 30/12/2020 19:07

I've read a TW for episode 6 which has made me uncomfortable because it'seant to be light fluffy fun. I quote like Pride and Prejudice on heat as a form of entertainment and the pretty pretty men don't hinder it's alure

SleepingStandingUp · 30/12/2020 19:08

@PuppyMonkey

Tbf him and his boxing mate don't need to act, they just need to stand there, in costume or lack there of
Annasgirl · 30/12/2020 19:08

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett thank you so much for that - I will definitely visit with DD. It looks truly amazing.

Where is the Dukes country house? It made Mr. Darcy’s estate look lackluster😉

I think the Pregnant cousin is beautiful but of course was the wrong ethnicity for the family
