To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

God, I love you lot.

Been singing The Sound Of Terfy lyrics out loud and DH and I are in stitches.

@TheBuffster

So the unanswered questions we've yet to receive answers on:

What JK actually said that was transphobic?

Can you please quote the parts of her essay that were transphobic?

Is it ok to acknowledge sex is real or is that transphobic?

If people are being transphobic to express concern about males competing in female sports?

If it's transphobic to have single sex spaces?

As transwomen offend at the same rate as men are women justified in exercising caution?

If men or transwomen don't pose a threat why do we need single sex spaces to begin with?

How can we protect Muslim women and abuse victims if they can't access single sex spaces?

Why are vulnerable women's rights less important than transwomen's rights?

Why are transmen's rights only ever explored when someone wants to do away with the word women?

Does the erosion of the word women not carry risks when applied to medical contexts?

Are women not at risk from missing out on medical procedures due to the muddying of language?

What rights do trans people not have?

How is JK trying to take these away?

How do you define women without biology without resorting to stereotypes?

Aren't stereotypes harmful?

How will safeguarding issues be addressed if deadnaming and access to shared spaces is brought in?

Why are women not allowed to meet and discuss their rights?

Why are groups accused of transphobia simply by not having it as their main aim?

And that's just off the top of my head.

Good to see all the questions in one place.

Looking forward to seeing the answers Smile

In the meantime, Merry Christmas!

Won't happen.

Winesalot · 25/12/2020 10:42

Never does.

[quote Dances]I still think non binary is the way to go

I've another question to add to the pile:

How can you be non binary if there is no binary?

Loving the songs.

queenofknives · 25/12/2020 11:13

Hahaha @TheBuffster It was clearly MEANT TO BE!

TheBuffster · 25/12/2020 11:20

Ds no doubt will be working on 'dicky, dicky, dicky (sex is binary)'

BrumBoo · 25/12/2020 11:23

Those who disagree with her are also free to say what she actually said that was transphobic also

They can say that, but they also have to actually prove their words. Or do you want to live in a society where a random person can label you a bigot based on their own opinions rather than fact? As pointed out, that is precisely what the witch-hunts were all about....

andyoldlabour · 25/12/2020 11:31

TheBuffster

Awesome post.
Not one person has actually managed to point to any transphobic comments made by JKR.
They simply yell "transphobe" and surry off into the wilderness.

andyoldlabour · 25/12/2020 11:31

Scurry, not surry.

Campervan69 · 25/12/2020 11:33

Merry Christmas to you all and a big thank you to the amazing JKRowling for bringing this conversation into the mainstream.

Women deserve female only services, spaces and sports.

TheBuffster · 25/12/2020 11:34

Thanks, we're giving @MorganKitten extra time to work it out, as we'd like it done to a west end tune.

TheBuffster · 25/12/2020 11:36

Slurs glorious slurs
You are a transphobic
Can't you see I'm a lady
Just ignore that I've got a dick...

TheChampagneGalop · 25/12/2020 13:45

Merry Christmas Xmas Smile
Enjoying the musical direction this thread took Xmas Grin

TheBuffster · 25/12/2020 14:44

Goodwill to all men. ( And menstruaters!)

FortunesFavour · 25/12/2020 14:52

Merry Christmas everyone!

OP - JK Rowling stood up for women’s rights. That’s women as in the female sex, rather than people who feel like they are women but might have a penis. She then further sinned by standing bravely by what she said and refusing to be bullied by a screaming mob throwing abuse at her for months. They hate her even more because they could not force her to parrot their words. She is amazing.

TheBuffster · 25/12/2020 14:59

Add to that she wrote some of the most intelligent, nuanced children's literature for a generation, which has inspired generations of reluctant readers. She's the only person alive to push themself off the rich list by giving to charity.
On the downside she launched Daniel Radcliffe's career and allowed HP 1+2 films to be made with those appalling child actors and the omitting of Peeves (Rik Mayall) . But, hey, I'm not sure that deserves the abuse she's taken.

queenofknives · 25/12/2020 16:15

She's the only person alive to push themself off the rich list by giving to charity.

Not to mention the charities she herself has founded to support sufferers of MS, among others. She is really fucking amazing and regardless whether you agree or disagree with her stance on women's rights (fwiw I agree wholeheartedly!) you have to respect her principled stand and thoughtful, sensitive approach. She is great and I hope she is having a fucking AMAZING Christmas Xmas Grin

VulvaPerson · 25/12/2020 16:19

Well yeah. Just saying 'shes a terfy bigot who hates transpeople' then fluffing about refusing to actually say what she said, or posting a link that still doesn't show any transphobia yet has someone repeating over and over that she is transphobic..or saying she follows some people who have anti trans posts in their past history (that ones really odd to me as when I was on twitter, I purposely followed people I disagreed with, as no point in an echo chamber and I like being actually challenged on opinions tbh...) is a bit flimsy really. If she truly is as bad as TRAs claim, there would be proof, lots of it. There would have to be. 'Dog whistles' and such are not proof, as noone else knows what these dog whistles are seemingly, only TRAs know that innocent sounding posts (such as 'dress how you want, live a good life') are actually rampant transphobia in disguise Hmm
justanotherneighinparadise · 25/12/2020 16:20

I need to google that MS charity. I had no idea she had done that.

In my lifetime Ive found the truth always outs in the end. Those who claim to be the ‘right side of history’ will no doubt delete their Tweets given enough time.

queenofknives · 25/12/2020 16:22

To the tune of Supercalafragilisticexpialidocious:

JK Rowling is a terf she wrote it in a blogpost
Even though she didn't really, that was just atrocious
Lying by some TRAs, and all their claims were bogus
JK Rowling's not a terf and she is not transphobic!
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
Um diddle diddle diddle um diddle ay
