To ask about JK Rowling - can someone tell me what happened?

Just that really. I like her. I like how she gives so much for charity and how she put Trump in his place, but I know people's views on her have changed. Something to do with trans comments?? Can someone explain (in really simple language!) what happened? Thank you!

Refuges, rape shelters, even in prisons
Anywhere penises don't have permission
Not letting men look at girls undressing
These are yet more very transphobic things

Winesalot · 24/12/2020 22:21

I think my copy of the Silkworm is a very different one from yours. Mine had a sympathetically portrayed trans character in it.

Strange. I thought this too. The trans character was a side character and was innocent. When I read here that it, the book, was transphobic, I was surprised. Maybe the person who wrote the post only read the misinformed posts, like those written about Troubled Blood (which was not even mentioning a trans person).

Doe, a deer, a female deer
[record scratch] WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST MISGENDER THAT DEER

QueenoftheAir · 24/12/2020 22:24

It uses insulting trope about trans women, they are aggressive and unable to overcome their masculine nature

If you’re going to condemn Rowling for creating a minor FICTIONAL character who is a transwoman, then you’d better “cancel” Thomas Harris and his central character, Hannibal Lecter. And I’m sure there are many many examples of fictional portrayals you don’t like of transpeople throughout fiction.

But I don’t see anyone threatening Thomas Harris with rape ...

TheBuffster · 24/12/2020 22:24

I feel there's a naming things song too in it.
Something like:
Doe a deer, a female dear
But only if it identifies so...

TheBuffster · 24/12/2020 22:27

Don't deadname Rudolph either.

There are other remarkable interpretations of My Favourite Things:

queenofknives · 24/12/2020 22:37

Doe, a deer, a female deer
Ray, a gender fluid elf,
Me, a name I call myself,
Xir, for everybody else.
Sew, a label with your pronouns
La, dramatic gender showdowns
T, for terfs we need to put down
for transphobic bigotry

MorganKitten

You talk about someone liking someone’s tweet or following someone who is considered transphobic makes a person a transphobe.

Does that apply to everything then? For any behaviour? Do you avoid companies like L’Oréal for the families past history? What about other companies that have crossed lines? What phone do you use for instance?

Or is it only for twitter personalities?

If so, do any of your trans friends follow people who are or like tweets that are abusive to women? Or if they are just the wrong sort of women, that’s ok? What about the trans activists who advocate for extreme porn that harms women, those that campaign to lower the porn actors ages to 16 and who excuse males who murder their intimate partners, because women’s skulls shouldn’t be so fragile? Or who are misogynistic towards women when they are in a position of power? Or the activists who call women barren, and gay men f*gs? Still ok? Do you check back through all your friends timelines to check? Because it may be very likely they have supported these activists in the past. If so, do these activists behaviour reflect you and your friends attitudes when someone comes to judge you and your friends like you have judged Joanne Rowling’s.

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen goodnight,
I hate to go and leave this Mumsnet fight
So long farewell auf Wiedersehen adieu,
But I must go or they'll ask for evidence for you.

Album and music video!

Madvixen · 24/12/2020 22:51

I utterly abhor this policing of people's likes and follows on Twitter. I regularly use the like function to bookmark articles I want to read later - it does not mean I agree or disagree with the article just that I've saved it for a later point. I also follow lots of people who I fundamentally disagree with, it stops me living in an echo chamber where I think that everyone agrees with my perspective.

Is it too much to hope that Ms Kitty Fantastic or whatever her name is comes back with a response in song?

Nothing flashy- maybe something from Les Mis?

TeddysTigerEyes · 25/12/2020 00:01

Hi OP. Merry Christmas! The best thing to do is read the essays and make your own mind up. You have seen that this subject is contentious, look into both sides and follow your own path. For me I heard whispers about this essay and I read it, I was horrified! Horrified with myself because I couldn’t see hate speech, so I read it again and I still couldn’t see hate speech. I thought it was because I must be a bigot and I hadn’t understood what was being said. I don’t think I am a bigot, I think I am a pretty fair minded person. I don’t think trans people are somehow less than me, I don’t think that a trans woman deserves less support and understanding than me, I believe a trans person deserves as much support and understanding as me and any other person. I just can’t believe that transwomen are actual physical women. Just the same as I as a born female can’t claim any of the realities a trans woman has had to live through. In the end I have had to come down on the side of women and I feel very disturbed about the support young people are being offered to deal with this. I find that the trans people I have in my life find the heated debate around this seems to have forgotten them and their realities and has driven a bigger wedge between them and the lives they would like to lead. JK Rowling may be a hate spewing bigot... I still can’t see the spite and hate though. The stuff about goblins and Jews is a bit pathetic really and I hope you won’t be diverted by that. I hope you have a merry Christmas and if you get time in the new year just read what she’d wrote.

ClareBlue · 25/12/2020 00:46

She will be on the right side of history and when any member of the silent majority read what she has written they always understand and the majority agree. At the moment a vocal hate filled small minority are shouting her and many down. She has the gift to be able to vocalise what the majority think, and thank God she is prepared to do it and take the vile abuse on behalf of all of us.
I challenge anyone to name a book that has sold over 100,000 copies that would stand up to the stereotyping tests that her books have, and not be subject to the same conclusions. Any book.

VulvaPerson · 25/12/2020 02:24

@Belladonna12

Such a disingenuous OP. I'm sure you know all about the controversy with regard to JK Rowling OP and your reason for posting is so that people who agree with her can all come on and reiterate her point of view (for the millionth time).
Those who disagree with her are also free to say what she actually said that was transphobic also. Just, that seems to be quite rare, instead snippy comments and lauging smileys and such are used, and sarky posts about how you must also be a bigot if you don't see the problem..etc. Where an actual argument (about the blatant transphobia that JK spews all over, as accused) would be a great thing to see. And could actually potentially change minds, or at least give a good conversation.

Seems pretty daft to bemoan others posting their opinions, and pretending that its impossible to post the opposing opinion, but not even trying to do so, just claiming the opposing opinion is the correct one but refusing to explain it!

Morgan
"I say all women trans, non bino, biological are the same. "

  • No they all belong to the class of humans, of which women and men are subsets.. Now, can you tell me : which characteristics differentiate the two?
Revisit those old Venn Diagrams. Show your working.

"Because I have an open mind and don’t just see a vagina as what makes a women."

Crikey! Did they lose their vaginas? Did some thief rob them? Phone the Police! Those poor vaginaless women!

Dances · 25/12/2020 06:10

I still think non binary is the way to go

I didn't say they weren't free to disagree. However, most people can't be bothered given the OP is very obvious attempt to repeat points that have been made over and over again.
