Stuck in Dover

No AIBU. Just stuck in my car in gridlocked Dover with a two year old. Only about two minutes from home. Been here half an hour now. Lots of traffic building up behind me. Plenty of people turning around. Anyone fancy keeping me company?

@Almostslimjim

Brexit has absolutely nothing to do with this!

Brexit has exacerbated the issue - due to a number of warehouses stockpiling (yes they are, DH works for one), there s a larger number of HGVs and vans delivering to us, and therefore trying to get home. The reason for the stockpiling is Brexit.

Nonsense. Just because you are sore at the UK leaving the EU, you can't just make shit up. Hmm
PizzaForOne · 23/12/2020 15:02

Enjoyable thread. Thanks OP

Have just seen that vehicles are starting to move at Marston, with the first tested lorry drivers setting off....From a holding area with at least basic facilities, towards the chaos which Dover appears to be at the moment. Can't help wondering if this is the most logical way to do things?

XmasGridlock · 23/12/2020 15:07

Glad my shit day has been so hilarious. You really couldn't make it up could you. Smile

Nonsense. Just because you are sore at the UK leaving the EU, you can't just make shit up. hmm

Where did I say I was sore at the EU leaving the UK and what exactly is made up?

  • port closed = covid
  • increase in number of HGVs in UK = Brexit stockpiling by certain warehouses.

What is not factual about that? Do you not believe that some companies are increasing UK based stock?

StanfordPines · 23/12/2020 15:10

Nonsense. Just because you are sore at the UK leaving the EU, you can't just make shit up

Why not. The leave campaign was entirely made up.

akerman · 23/12/2020 15:10

What’s your evidence for saying the stockpiling is nonsense, Lisa? I heard about the intention to Brexit stockpile on the news weeks ago, so I’m surprised you’re dismissing it quite so airily. Why do you think it isn’t true?

GabsAlot · 23/12/2020 15:13

glad youre home op

why didnt they drop the tests off by drone

its not hard to work out cars wont get through

Orchidflower1 · 23/12/2020 15:18

Glad you’re home @XmasGridlock. Hope you’re clean and dry now! Have the very best Christmas that you’re able to and a healthy and safe 2021🎄

There have been queues in Dover way before the new virus issue started.

A combination of staffing issues (due to Covid) , Christmas and stockpiling by companies wanting to beat the New Year deadline.

Then this happened.

Brexit certainly isn't helping the situation though.

missl1 · 23/12/2020 15:32

Glad you’re home safe OP.

I detect hostility between leavers and remainers, which is a huge shame. We need to rise above the divisive politics we’ve been fed from populist governments over the last few years. We’re better than this!

I believe the new covid strain is already in Europe and that this is a purely political and unnecessary move, for which the new variant is the perfect excuse.

Personal opinions on this issue aside let’s not resort to mud slinging across the shitty Brexit divide we’ve been coaxed into.

XmasGridlock · 23/12/2020 15:37

These are scary fucking times but luckily and lord knows how, DHL managed to get a delivery van to my house with a surprise package from my Aunt full of chocolate. Who cares that the Bins haven't been emptied. I know what I'm doing tonight. Christmas vacation and a fuck ton of chocolate. Merry Christmas to you all. May we ride through these shit times.

OP posts:
LindaEllen · 23/12/2020 15:40

So glad you managed to make it home, and yes, absolutely eat ALL of that chocolate tonight (or as much as you can manage at least).

This will be one of those stories you tell for years to come, and will now be thankfully nothing more than a memory!

Vitaminsss · 23/12/2020 15:42

Haha who would have thought Father Christmas would masquerade as a DHL driver Grin

This has utterly puzzled me. Sure have a testing base before Dover going forward but when the queues were already there you start at the front surely?? The people at the front can't get out to go to the airport (and will be pissed at giving up their space at the front of the queue) and those at the back can tested but can't get to the front...
terrywynne · 23/12/2020 15:42

Glad you got home OP!

@ReallySpicyCurry

That man who wouldn't let the family in to use his toilet should be ashamed of himself.
pmsl this on mn where even people working in your house can't use it,

I thought you thought we were “better than this”.
