To ask if anyone else has migraine "hangover"

Got another hormonal
Migraine Friday. Mostly headed off by Triptan but bad enough to need 2 x paramol and a nap pre school run ( floated through that on those meds plus ibuprofen). Another Triptan Saturday as it felt like it was back and more Paramol No Triptan Sunday but more painkillers then and yesterday. And today only ibuprofen but my scalp tonight is so sore and my throat inside and my ear - all down the headache side. And I want to eat crisps and drink coke and craving salt.
It's knackering but I'm trying to document 6 months worth and then go back to talk preventatives. Anyone else ?

Yip. Migraine hangover is definitely a thing. I take 50mg sumo triptan and 2 anadin extra. Fuck paracetamol, it does nothing.

I've also started mindful breathing while I wait for the tablets to kick in and the aura to pass. This has massively helped as previously I'd feel crap for hours. Some v quiet spa music on Spotify helps me to focus on my breathing.

Migraines are shite and they need to die. This year has been absolutely terrible for me, I'm getting them at least 3 or 4 times a month with apparently varying triggers so fuck knows what's going on.

Hope you get some relief from yours.

RandomMess · 15/12/2020 23:16

I only get them occasionally and provided I see my visual disturbance I can head off the worst with 2 solpadeine and sleep BUT absolutely get the hangover the following day feel as rough as hell.

drspouse · 15/12/2020 23:17

Me waves gently
I don't get them often now thankfully. The implant helped and though I'm still on it, I'm also on HRT.
But I do really feel fragile afterwards.
I did take propanalol which was good except then it started to aggravate my asthma.

RUOKHon · 15/12/2020 23:18

Yes I always have a migraine hangover afterwards. It’s grim.

TryingnottobeWaynettaSlob · 15/12/2020 23:19

Yes I always get a migraine hangover mixed with a weird elation that it’s gone. But feel totally wiped out and out of it, I usually get my Words mixed up and crave high fat salty food.

DramaAlpaca · 15/12/2020 23:20

I used to. I haven't had a migraine since the menopause, thank god.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 15/12/2020 23:20

Yup! Thankfully my migraines have got much better over the years but have always suffered with really bad migraine hangovers, with a bad one they can knock me out for days.

Holothane · 15/12/2020 23:22

Propanol has been a life saver for me my migraines were evil,

drspouse · 15/12/2020 23:22

@DramaAlpaca

I used to. I haven't had a migraine since the menopause, thank god.
Can you tell me, did you take HRT? I'm not sure how much longer I will be on HRT for or if it's helping my migraines or not!
Rocknrollmummy · 15/12/2020 23:22

I always crave crisps and salty food when I have a migraine and afterwards. I’ve often wondered why that was. If I’ve had a severe one I often feel really weak for a few days afterwards. They can really take it out of you.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 15/12/2020 23:23

Yes. I used to get an aura for a day before the migraine (sometimes I could use this as a warning and stop it developing).
Then the actual migraine lasting anywhere between 1-3 days.
Then migraine hangover for a day.

When this starting happening every other week my Dr agreed to put me on meds to stop them. Although they are starting to creep back in Sad

Eckhart · 15/12/2020 23:24

Yes, I called it a migraine hangover myself until I learned its real name. It's the 'postdrome' stage. I generally feel rough for a few days with it, but not rough enough to take a triptan. Migraine is 'a hangover on turbulent seas' and the postdrome drops to just a hangover!

Have you ever had euphoria? That's bloody weird. It's only happened to me once or twice. One time I had a 'back to work' meeting with my boss and she asked me if I was better. I must have looked like I'd just had a spliff, I felt amazing, lounged back in my chair, and said 'Oh, god, man, yeah...' I was aware it was weird at the time, but I didn't care Smile

CuppaZa · 15/12/2020 23:24

Yes

Callcat · 15/12/2020 23:25

Oh god yes me. It sometimes lasts for 3 days. It's awful!

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 15/12/2020 23:26

I definitely get migraine hangovers. The next day I feel exhausted and sort of light. It's very difficult to describe accurately but it's definitely a thing.

CassandraCross · 15/12/2020 23:26

Another one here who gets the hangover and crave very sweet tea (never have sugar in tea normally) with a side order of salted crisps.

CharityEscapeGoat · 15/12/2020 23:26

Yes. I am unable to work due to migraines. I am on preventative medication & get hospital treatment every 3 months, but am not allowed to take any pain relief or triptans. I get about 1 day before the attack & up to 2 days after, during which I need serious nap time, in addition to sleeping at night. My migraines can last 3 days, & I get 4-8 a month. I also crave salt. Magnesium supplements help, a bit. Also, I recommend a really strict food diary to see if you've any specific trigger foods. I have loads, it's taken me over a decade to figure some of them out.

turkeymince · 15/12/2020 23:26

Yes definitely it's awful it's called postdrome and it's horrible can last a couple days.

LoungeLizardLhama · 15/12/2020 23:27

Ugh me too. I always feel a bit spaced out or kind of bewildered the day after a bad migraine. Yours sounds horrific op. I hope you get the preventatives you need.

DramaAlpaca · 15/12/2020 23:27

@drspouse no, I haven't taken HRT, I didn't feel the need for it.

opinionatedfreak · 15/12/2020 23:29

I get a bad post drome.

I’m usually emotional & exhausted.

My migraines are hormonal and stress related...

DameCelia · 15/12/2020 23:29

@Eckhart I get the euphoria before mine.
Off my trolley for half an hour.
Also serious personality changes during, really frightening and awful.

LakieLady · 15/12/2020 23:30

I used to get them, to the point where I felt so spaced out I didn't feel safe crossing roads, let alone driving.

They usually went by lunchtime of the day after the attack though. I sometimes wondered if it was partly lack of sleep, becuase the mi
graines used to make me throw up all night.

Migraines are bastards, they should fuck off.

Eckhart · 15/12/2020 23:38

@DameCelia Yes, personality shifts. I get something like beer-guilt (I don't drink but I used to), and turn into a bear with a wounded head, and awful paranoia if anybody tries to help me. I really don't do myself any favours! Migraine-world is a different world altogether. It always surprises me that I can go so quickly from being ok to being a gibbering wreck. I can run 10 miles on a Tuesday and then be barely able to brush my teeth on Wednesday.

Rockhopper81 · 15/12/2020 23:59

Yup, I always call them a migraine hangover, even though I know it's called postdrome. Feel totally out of it, no energy, generally crap. It's weird, because at that point I'm relieved the woodpecker with the pneumatic drill has stopped trying to work it's way out of the left-front side of my head and I am thus allowed to move my head if I so wish, but I don't have the energy or competence to really appreciate it.

I've also found if I don't get the triptan in as soon as the head pain starts, it does bugger all. If I do, I feel odd, particularly my shoulder/arms/hands, but it does help the pain a bit. But if I don't - and I have missed the window on the previous two migraines I've had - nothing really helps. Maybe some of the strong painkillers that I have left from a knee injury, but the doctor doesn't like me to take them for them, so honestly I've just stopped telling them now.
