To ask if anyone else has migraine "hangover"

Got another hormonal
Migraine Friday. Mostly headed off by Triptan but bad enough to need 2 x paramol and a nap pre school run ( floated through that on those meds plus ibuprofen). Another Triptan Saturday as it felt like it was back and more Paramol No Triptan Sunday but more painkillers then and yesterday. And today only ibuprofen but my scalp tonight is so sore and my throat inside and my ear - all down the headache side. And I want to eat crisps and drink coke and craving salt.
It's knackering but I'm trying to document 6 months worth and then go back to talk preventatives. Anyone else ?

Does anyone else get rage with a migraine? I’m generally quite mild mannered but when a migraine is coming on I can get really angry and lose it, often over something relatively minor. I used to think the anger triggered the migraine but actually I think it’s an early phase. With age I’ve got better at recognising it and stepping back but it’s a very weird thing to have your brain misfire to the extent that your personality is affected.

In terms of hangover, I think I’m fairly lucky. I just get a bad headache for a couple of days, but compared to the migraine proper, it seems minor. But when I was taking meds for migraines (can’t remember which ones) I would feel like one was coming for several days afterwards, and take more medicine, prolonging the problem.

Tarrarra · 17/12/2020 00:15

Hello my tribe! Ive suffered with horrible migraines for years. Have tried all the preventative meds and now just rely on the triptans. I feel awful the day before- tired, aching and heavy. Then I have three days of migraine and lastly a day of postdrome where I heavy and clumsy and not fit for anything. I was told about the aspirin and coke by a specialist who also said you should take your triptans with buccastem as migraine shuts down your digestive system.

fantasmasgoria1 · 17/12/2020 00:17

I have always had a migraine hangover. I used to see the aura, begin to feel sick, excruciating headache, being in bed all day vomiting and often having to go to the toilet a fair amount (not diarrhoea just normal). Once the main headache went I was in a haze with a mild dizziness and mild headache for a day or two. Now they have lessened in severity if I see the aura I take my cocodamol 30 /500mg that I have for my spine and that really works. My Nausea is much less these days and not very often sick. I probably only need an hour or so in bed but I still get the migration hangover but much more mildly.

Does anyone here get hemiplegic migraines? Those are the kind I get and they're bloody frightening.

Oh...! I didn't know this was a recognised thing! Just googled it. Yes. I feel like I've got Bells Palsy, and only one side of my face can do expressions for a while. I get numbness and tingling down the arm on the same side too. The eye works but can't be bothered to make the effort of focusing (lazy git). It's all on the same side as the head pain.

I assumed until now that everybody's migraines were like this.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/12/2020 00:53

My migraines were completely debilitating. I'd lose my sight and speech and the only thing I could do was cut out all light and sound and sleep.

The migraine hangovers used to last 2-3 days after. I would just feel exhausted.

They were definitely hormonally driven. My GP was great. I tried beta blockers first, which worked but made me feel dizzy.

I have now started taking HRT; I feel great and no migraines for 6 months now.

TheGremlinsAreComing · 17/12/2020 00:59

@Eckhart first time my now exh witnessed it he thought I was having a stroke. I did end up in A&E actually. And still my GP won't try me on preventative meds.

I will try aspirin though, it's not something I've tried before. GP told me about Coca Cola being great for settling the stomach when my youngest had a tummy bug, but I never considered it for migraine.

Eckhart · 17/12/2020 01:04

Apparently it's to do with its blood thinning properties (which are also the reason people take it for high blood pressure). It can stop the 'blood traffic jam' that they think causes migraines, which is caused by the arteries having a spasm. That's what the doctor told me was the theory, anyway. I don't think they really know.

It does feel like brain cramp, to me, the headache part. And it explains the wide and varied symptoms people get, due to the variance in location in the brain.

PickAChew · 17/12/2020 01:05

I find the hangover as bad as the migraine itself. I literally can't string a sentence together.

cinnabarmoth · 17/12/2020 06:58

Before I realised I had migraines I thought they WERE hangovers, some were quite mild so I didn't twig that there was a pattern. They've ramped up since I have got older and I now recognise them as menstrual migraines with different phases in each. Tbh they do still feel like hangovers and are one of the reasons I no longer drink much, it's bad enough feeling like that 2-3 days a month without inflicting it on myself!
It's really interesting to hear other people's descriptions of migraine. I am lucky in that I can usually still just about function during a migraine pain-wise (though this does tend to make it go on for longer). But I do get that weird spaced out feeling, my skin feels very tender and I get really sore feet (does anyone else get that?). And so so thirsty, like a clay pot that you keep filling up and the water is just evaporating from it. And then the craving salt and fat (I do usually give in to it) which I think is the postdrome bit and most like a hangover. Finally I get mild euphoria as it clears, though I usually feel wiped out for a day afterwards.

What's everyone's experience with triptans? I was prescribed some by a very grumpy and unsympathetic doctor who was herself experiencing migraine when I saw her, and the list of side effects put me off from taking them. I usually take migraleve or plain co-codamol (migraleve better because of the anti-nausea element) but they're not terribly effective and only take the edge off, nothing else seems to work (though I haven't tried aspirin).

TheGremlinsAreComing · 17/12/2020 12:44

Just been to the chemist and they were brilliant! More help then my GP has ever been. They've given me some soluble aspirin/codeine and ordered in some sumatriptan for me to collect tomorrow.

drspouse · 17/12/2020 12:47

Of course I had a migraine yesterday. Brief thankfully, I slept for about 2 hours and then got up after the DC were settled/in bed.

Newstart20 · 17/12/2020 12:48

I always find a very high carb meal helps - both at the time of the migraine and afterwards. I'm not sure why, maybe because it lines the stomach. Also, make sure you keep well hydrated.

Unfortunately when I have a bad one I can't even keep water down let alone food.

During the hangover part I just eat loads of toast and biscuits.

Twilightstarbright · 17/12/2020 13:22

Another migraine sufferer here. I feel so exhausted the day after I can barely function.

permanentlyexhaustedpigeon · 17/12/2020 13:31

Yep. I tend to get tearful, then get disoriented and then visual disturbances start, leading to more or less blacking out after an hour or two. By day 2 I have the headache, noise sensitivity and a real craving for fried things, but it's less scary.
Chocolate helps stave off the worst, weirdly.

fastandthecurious · 17/12/2020 13:42

Yes I'm always so excited and feel really nauseous in the days after a migraine. Also I become stupidly clumsy and end up tripping over stuff and bumping into things. My migraines impair my vision though so maybe that's why?

fastandthecurious · 17/12/2020 13:42

Excited= exhausted** definitely not excited 😂

Arcadia · 17/12/2020 13:47

Yes I do. I am suffering about three a month at the moment, and am just awaiting a call from the doctor today about preventative options as I feel like I've tried everything else and my sumatriptan isn't working so well for me anymore.

Just had a can of Coke and some crisps (before reading this thread!) and that seems to have helped a bit but the pain is really coming and going today.

DameCelia · 17/12/2020 13:49

Voltarol suppositories have been a game changer for me.
Migraine stops your digestive system which is why you throw up. The suppositories bypass the stomach completely (Blush) and get into the bloodstream really fast.

I have this with coffee. If I say at work I've got a migraine coming on, I inevitably get met with 'Are you sure you should be having all that coffee..?'

People like to try to help, but I've had so much trouble with this. I'm not the best at accepting help in the first place, and my social boundaries get screwed up with a migraine. 'I HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE, YOU BLITHERING IDIOT!!' is so close to my lips, when people are really just being caring.

One of the reasons it's best to be in a quiet, dark room: I can't offend anyone!

fastandthecurious · 17/12/2020 14:07

Yes when I feel a migraine coming on I'll have a big bottle of water and a can of coke. The caffeine seems to help a bit but sometimes it just makes me vomit 🙃

Zebrahooves · 17/12/2020 14:10

I've just had this too. Had a migraine for at least 3 days this week, pain, loss of vision, feeling sick and dizzy. Two lots of sumatriptan and painkillers on separate days and I hope that I am over the worst of it now.

Definitely get migraine hangover.

Are anyone else's migraines triggered by bright light? Sunshine bouncing off a window or windscreen can set me off straight away.

explorerdog · 17/12/2020 14:10

Haven't had one for a few years as I realised my trigger was dehydration. At the first sign I drink a pint of water and try to keep hydrated.
I used to feel rough for a couple of days after one and craved carbs. I would eat a pile of toast as soon as it started easing.
