To be pissed off with DH about this?

Miltt · 10/12/2020 16:00

We did the weekly food shop Monday and DH thought we could have a curry today when my three step children come round (I have two here of my own too)

So for some ridiculous reason DH put the big pack of chicken breasts in the freezer, there was no need for that. He knew we would be having it today and the use by date was the 14th.

He omits to tell me he's frozen them.

Today comes and he goes to collect the DSC, he gives me a call on the way back to ask if I could start dicing the chicken and making the curry.

Chicken is nowhere to be found in the fridge, I find it in the freezer encased in a block of ice.

So no curry tonight, no time, they have to have chicken nuggets and chips.

I tried to defrost the chicken quickly on the hob but it went funny and I didn't want to risk it so it went in the bin.

This is the second time he's caused inconvenience by freezing things that didn't need freezing and then failing to tell me about it.

AIBU to be pissed off with him?

Yeah it’s annoying OP, but I forget to get things out the freezer all the time and I have nobody to blame other than myself. S/he who is without sin and all that.

Next time send him to the supermarket on the way home. The stuff in the freezer will get eaten at some point.

moonlight1705 · 10/12/2020 16:08

Agree he was being annoying by freezing unnecessarily but couldn't you have popped in the microwave on defrost setting?

Probably a daft question if you do not have a microwave.

DontWalkPastTheCastle · 10/12/2020 16:09

It is a waste, but could he not have stopped on the way home for more chicken?

LittleMissLockdown · 10/12/2020 16:10

Surely the sensible thing to do would be to tell them to pick up more chicken on the way home instead of trying to defrost the chicken and then having to throw it away?

I couldn't get too cross at him putting it in the freezer. He obviously did it absentmindedly.

shouldhavecalleditoatabix · 10/12/2020 16:11

To be honest, 2 minutes in the microwave on full owner defrosts enough to chop the chicken up whilst frozen (which is infinitely easier than chopping it normally). Shove it in a bowl and it defrosts very quickly. Even cooking it from slightly frozen isn't an issue in a curry because the sauce will quickly thaw it out. Total non issue for me

Smallsteps88 · 10/12/2020 16:12

I do this all the fucking time. And yes, I get pissed off at myself every single time Grin

pilates · 10/12/2020 16:12

Annoying but I’m guilty of doing the same.

dontdisturbmenow · 10/12/2020 16:16

Of course it can be defrosted in the microwave.

altiara · 10/12/2020 16:16

I’d be more pissed off that you ruined the chicken rather than defrosting it and had to throw it away. If you’ve no microwave, I’d have sent him out for more chicken.

BrumBoo · 10/12/2020 16:18

Not the end of the world. If you had nuggets anyway, then why try and quick defrost the chicken?

I was craving a cheap chocolate gateaux the other day and bought one in the morning. Husband put the shopping away when I got in and I mentioned cake needing defrosting. He immediately forgot and put it in the damn freezer. Devastated Sad (not really, but I was bloody looking forward to it).

Miltt · 10/12/2020 16:21

We don't have a microwave unfortunately.

He also didn't have his wallet with him when he collected the kids so couldn't have stopped off to get more.

They only spend 3 hours here on a Thursday so no time to go out again, shop, back cook etc.

OP posts:
Woohoowoowoo · 10/12/2020 16:21

Why not just send him to the shop to get more? Or get a takeaway.

I'd be more annoyed you tried to defrost it and ruined it TBH.

AlternativePerspective · 10/12/2020 16:23

I would be more pissed off at a kg of ruined chicken because you’d tried to defrost it on the hob.

Just send him to the supermarket.

FWIW you’re not supposed to defrost chicken in the microwave, but a hack to defrost it a bit quicker - remove from the packet and put it on a metal baking tray. Cover with foil and turn it over a couple of times. Once it’s been out for about an hour and a half you should be able to cut it into chunks and at that point it will defrost much quicker.

PimpleMoose · 10/12/2020 16:24

It happens and, honestly, it sounds like you needlessly wasted the chicken.

Bluntness100 · 10/12/2020 16:25

I also don’t know why you tried to defrost it like that.

You can just cook the breasts from frozen in the oven, then added it to the curry, it wasn’t a big deal. You could have googled it if you were not sure, or asked on here

Miltt · 10/12/2020 16:25

You're not supposed to let chicken rest at a medium temp are you, and by the time I took the partly defrosted (outer layer of skin only) chicken out of the pan to chop it all up it had been sat at room temperature with a warm outside and frozen inside. I just didn't want to risk it.

I shouldn't have bothered trying granted but the kids were looking forward to the curry.

PoppyOppy · 10/12/2020 16:27

You binned chicken because you couldn't defrost it? No microwave? Once you had discovered you couldn't do the curry in the time, you then threw perfectly good food away?

Unbelievable. There are people in this country and many others who rely on food banks to get a meal, any meal on the table for their families and you're happily wasting food. Angry

LittleMissLockdown · 10/12/2020 16:29

If they really wanted curry how long would it have taken one of you to nip to a shop when he got back? Curry is a pretty quick meal so even if you only had 3 hours a short delay wouldn't have made much difference.

HopeAndDriftWood · 10/12/2020 16:30

This, really. How long had it been sat for?

The food waste would bother me a lot more than him freezing it, irritating as that is when you're ready to cook.

MustardMitt · 10/12/2020 16:31

Irritating on his part but completely ridiculous on yours.

MaskingForIt · 10/12/2020 16:33

I know right. More money than sense, some people.
SnuggyBuggy · 10/12/2020 16:34

Mine does the same thing. We only eat about 2 breasts worth at a time and there is currently a massive block of them in the back of the freezer I can't figure out how to separate.

Bluntness100 · 10/12/2020 16:34

It’s so easy though. Just throw the breasts in the oven and cook from frozen, shit you can even cover them in curry sauce, add your onions, or whatever else and shove that in the oven. Chicken is perfectly fine to be cooked from frozen

Op have you never bought any frozen chicken thing and cooked it in the oven, from a ready meal to a chicken Kiev?

Barmyfarmy · 10/12/2020 16:39

Good grief at least the kids ate! It's one meal those kids will have already forgotten about, it's really not a big enough deal to be that angry about. Pick your battles OP or he might start lobbing frozen chicken boobs at you!

Hahaha88 · 10/12/2020 16:43

It's a pita but it's really not worth getting wound up over.
