To be pissed off with DH about this?

We did the weekly food shop Monday and DH thought we could have a curry today when my three step children come round (I have two here of my own too)

So for some ridiculous reason DH put the big pack of chicken breasts in the freezer, there was no need for that. He knew we would be having it today and the use by date was the 14th.

He omits to tell me he's frozen them.

Today comes and he goes to collect the DSC, he gives me a call on the way back to ask if I could start dicing the chicken and making the curry.

Chicken is nowhere to be found in the fridge, I find it in the freezer encased in a block of ice.

So no curry tonight, no time, they have to have chicken nuggets and chips.

I tried to defrost the chicken quickly on the hob but it went funny and I didn't want to risk it so it went in the bin.

This is the second time he's caused inconvenience by freezing things that didn't need freezing and then failing to tell me about it.

AIBU to be pissed off with him?

Yeah, you’re right, you’ve both been a bit daft.

I would’ve gone for the takeaway menu rather than back in the freezer.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 10/12/2020 17:02

Meh, it happens. I've done similar today, forgot to take meat out of the freezer this morning. Take out tonight then.
At least you've realised that you over reacted, no harm done.
BTW I regularly cook chicken straight from frozen, I just make sure it's cooked really well.

Cheeseboardandmincepies · 10/12/2020 17:13

YABU for defrosting it on the hob and chucking it when there’s starving children on the street.

Etinox · 10/12/2020 17:14

@MustardMitt

Irritating on his part but completely ridiculous on yours.
Yup. I’d get it out of the bin and cook it up now

Oh give it a rest. The middle class virtue signalling is bloody stupid and ignorant. You know poor people can fuck up their dinners as well?
hitchhikingghost · 10/12/2020 17:15

@SnuggyBuggy Just do some batch cooking like a curry, and refreeze flat in freezer bags so it won’t take up much space. Perfect for days when you are in a hurry.

FenceFuckery · 10/12/2020 17:17

The best way to defrost meat anyway is to seal it in a ziploc (if not already wrapped), and immerse in a sink of warm water. Way better than a microwavey.

SnuggyBuggy · 10/12/2020 17:17

I think I'm holding out for a big group meal involving a massive chicken dish Grin

Beautifulbonnie · 10/12/2020 17:18

I’d be furious that my hubby threw away all that chicken. I’m sorry. I feel for you. I really do. But that’s one hell of a lot of waste b

Beautifulbonnie · 10/12/2020 17:18

On the plus side

Take away?!?

poshme · 10/12/2020 17:22

I often get frozen chicken out, use a very sharp knife to slice it and cook straight away into curry.
Or put in fan oven with just fan on and no heat- defrosts quicker.

I can't believe that you threw it away because it'd been out 5 minutes!!!

OP please read up about the storage and preparation of food and how bacteria multiplies or doesn't.

What a waste.

Miltt · 10/12/2020 17:23

I had it on the hob for 5-10 minutes then took it out to dice, the outer layer was thawed and flaking off but the inside was frozen solid like rock.

It was the fact that it was partly cooked and partly frozen, sat out at room temp whilst I tried to dice it, that spurred me to just bin it. I know frozen chicken is fine to be kept out to defrost but partly cooked chicken is iffy.

I accept I've been a bit of a prat Grin

For those up in arms about the binned chicken, it's extremely rare for me to waste food and you're probably better off directing your outrage at the restraunt trade.

I agree semi frozeb chicken is much easier to slice for something like a stir fry.

Aprilx · 10/12/2020 17:25

Enough chicken for seven is a lot of chicken, have you not been to the fridge since Monday? I think I would have spotted it wasn’t there. Anyway, I would have left it in the freezer for another time and bought some fresh chicken. I think DH should be more annoyed with you than you with him as that really is a lot of waste.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/12/2020 17:25

It's not middle class virtue signalling. There have been times in my life where the waste of all that chicken would have been a tragedy. (Only it wouldn't have happened because I wouldn't have thrown it away.)

fashu · 10/12/2020 17:33

My DH goes mad if we have meat/fish in the fridge for more than a day. Everything goes in the freezer unless its getting used the by lunch time the next day. In the morning, we decide what to have an put it on the counter on a plate. Usually defrosted in time, if not a quick blast on the microwave defrost.
DH always tells me don't forget the meat 90% of the time I do forget and he takes it out. I think it comes from both sides, also I wouldn't trust chicken in the fridge for more than 2 days.

wheretonow123 · 10/12/2020 17:36

I sympathise with you because, much to my annoyance, we waste more food that we would like tom - for a variety of reasons.

The only thing I would have done differently is that I would have gone for a takeaway as a little treat.

Benjispruce2 · 10/12/2020 17:36

Take away on him?

Benjispruce2 · 10/12/2020 17:37

Veggie curry?

Joeblack066 · 10/12/2020 17:42

Husband made a mistake.
My first one ran off with my friend and emptied the bank account, paying nothing for 3 kids for 6 years.
Second was DV and I had to literally escape after a very nasty knife incident.
It really doesn’t matter in the scheme of things OP.

Viviennemary · 10/12/2020 17:48

I thought everyone had a microwave. More chicken on the way home. I think you're both to blame. Or leave chicken for another time.

Lazypuppy · 10/12/2020 17:53

I defrost chicken by putting the bag we froze it in in a bowl of hot water, 20mins and its defrosted.

catnoir1 · 10/12/2020 17:58

Why not just boil it with a carrot onion and bit of celery and then chop into the curry once cooked? The cooked chicken can then be frozen.

stayathomer · 10/12/2020 17:59

I see now why so many people say they dont post here anymore! Hope your evening gets better OP!

It's not middle class virtue signalling. There have been times in my life where the waste of all that chicken would have been a tragedy. (Only it wouldn't have happened because I wouldn't have thrown it away.)

And? Plenty of people (including myself) have literally starved in this country due to poverty (or even just a bad month). What possible result do you think you'll get berating a stranger on the internet for one dinner fuck-up? Hell, even if she was throwing away a kilo of chicken a week, it wouldn't make a difference to the poverty issue in the UK, which is not caused by the situation given in the op!
