Perfume has become Ridiculously Expensive

A few years ago 30ml bottles were around the £35 - 40 mark and people expected to pay £60 - 70 for a 50ml bottle ,
But now it's difficult to find anything of quality for under £80
And that's for the smallest size.
Now I realise that there's inflation, but surely not this big a jump.
It's pure greed and I won't be buying any mote perfume for myself or presents for family for a long time. I cant afford to any more and i speak as a perfume lover.
Usually I've bought lots from Boots and HoF by now.

They're taking the piss surely?
Are people really willing to fork out over a 100 quid on a small bottle of, lets face it, chemicals
and we can't even test before we buy !

YANBU. I bought Marc Jacobs 100ml for £50 in Selfridges 5 years ago, it’s £70 now.

Its ridiculous. I called into Boots at the weekend, hardly anything under £70. I hated the fact that because of Covid customers had to be penned into the perfume area and you weren't allowed to smell anything before you purchased.

likeamillpond · 10/12/2020 07:27

My partner bought me a Tom Ford as a treat about 5 years ago . It was expensive then at around £ 70.
That same Perfume, same size is
£150!

If they're not all careful, their greed will cause them to go out of business.
I get the while concept of
If it's too cheap it becomes less desirable
But there's such a thing as overdoing things.

Yes it’s expensive, IMO outrageously so but with the ever growing “influencer” population perfumes are booming.

Herja · 10/12/2020 07:31

I always loved perfume. I sold high end perfume, knew about it and got staff discounts that I made healthy use of.

Don't work there now. The only place I buy it from is next! It is quite absurdly expensive. And I am very good at justifying high perfume prices...

Charley50 · 10/12/2020 07:31

I agree. I got some patchouli oil instead!

MoiraNotRuby · 10/12/2020 07:32

I'm so glad you posted this, I thought I was completely out of touch! Yes perfume is too expensive for me to justify now. I'm just using up random stuff I've had in cupboards, probably past its best but almost no one comes within 2m of me anyway so I don't think it matters too much!!!

likeamillpond · 10/12/2020 07:33

Going up by a tenner I can understand but a lot have almost doubled in price.
In a very short time.

If people are prepared to pay the higher prices, then it's supply and demand.

It is after all a luxury item, it's not deodorant.

stackemhigh · 10/12/2020 07:36

£150! I was baking at £70 for 100ml Shock

Roselilly36 · 10/12/2020 07:38

I find boots/Superdrug expensive generally, Savers sell lots of popular perfumes at cheaper prices IMHO.

Circumlocutious · 10/12/2020 07:39

Checking in to this thread just to make a note of any bargain perfume purchases.

👀

JorisBonson · 10/12/2020 07:41

There's more choice now at least. Zara perfume is £15 and smells as good, if not better, than many designer brands.

KeyboardWorriers · 10/12/2020 07:42

I agree.i used to treat myself to perfume pre children. Decided I would buy a bottle of one of my old favourites recently as had had a really good pay rise... I was horrified by the prices! I don't mind spending a fair bit but not upwards of £80!

likeamillpond · 10/12/2020 07:44

@nosswith

I have quite a collection of what people deem to be luxury perfumes. Serge Luton, Chanel, Tauer, Creed to name a few, as well as some more mainstream ones. I buy what I like the smell of. I don't care whether it's Britney or Tom Ford. But even I can't justify the expense any more.

They have shot up ridiculously! I'm a bit of a bargain hunter though so I always watch out for vouchers codes I can use online if I know the perfume or aftershave (for a gift) I want. The perfume shop often have good offers on too.

crystalize · 10/12/2020 07:45

Inflated prices and also Jo Malones's scent now doesn't last! It has changed from years ago when the smell used to linger. I will never buy it again. Absolute rip off.

RaspberryCoulis · 10/12/2020 07:45

Perfume doesn't have to be the designer, branded names.

M&S do some really nice ones, less than £20 for 100ml - the blue Aqua one is lovely. DD likes the Next "Just Pink" scent and it's £22 for 200ml. Zara has similar products. You can even buy fragrance in Lidl and Aldi - DH loves the Lidl £2.99 aftershave which comes in a silver box (can't remember the name).

Yes you can go out and spend ££££ but the blanket statement of "perfume is expensive" is not true. (And we're not scraping together pennies to afford things - we just don't see the point of spending £80 on an item when the £20 smells just as nice).

Parmavioletmum · 10/12/2020 07:45

I then keep my 'naice' ones for occasional wear and use next for day to day wear as they have several nice ones and they're much more reasonable.

Alexandernevermind · 10/12/2020 07:46

This is why the fakes are doing so well at the moment. I've had compliments on my fake FM Miss Dior, which lasts all day.

formerbabe · 10/12/2020 07:46

I'd love to know the mark up on perfume...it must be huge. I used to have nice perfumes pre dc but I cannot justify those prices anymore. Next, Zara and M&S all do really nice perfumes. Lidl this week has lots of perfumes for about a fiver...some were quite nice.

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 10/12/2020 07:47

If you just want it for you and are not fussed about having a pretty bottle or fancy packaging try the perfume parlour www.perfume-parlour.co.uk/. They do excellent dupes of almost every popular scent for a fraction of the cost of the real thing.

MrsMomoa · 10/12/2020 07:47

I just use body mists now.
It's so much cheaper as perfumes are crazy expensive now.
