Perfume has become Ridiculously Expensive

A few years ago 30ml bottles were around the £35 - 40 mark and people expected to pay £60 - 70 for a 50ml bottle ,
But now it's difficult to find anything of quality for under £80
And that's for the smallest size.
Now I realise that there's inflation, but surely not this big a jump.
It's pure greed and I won't be buying any mote perfume for myself or presents for family for a long time. I cant afford to any more and i speak as a perfume lover.
Usually I've bought lots from Boots and HoF by now.

They're taking the piss surely?
Are people really willing to fork out over a 100 quid on a small bottle of, lets face it, chemicals
and we can't even test before we buy !

Most perfumes these days don't have natural ingredients in them so it's not as if the ludicrous price hikes can be put down to
Poor harvests etc pushing prices up.

@likeamillpond

he vast majority of the price tag £££££ to a fashion house, to bolster their profit for their less profitable main business of couture and making beautiful clothes for people who can afford them.

Disturbing.

Why is that disturbing?

Couture fashion is bought by very very few in the world. Vast majority of people though will have at some point in their life owned a premium luxury fragrance...of course that's where they make the money.

frosted232 · 10/12/2020 08:53

@AllTheCakes

You can pretty much buy any perfume in Perfume Parlour or from a hun bot on Facebook selling FM. If you’re not bothered about the packaging then buying dupes is fine.
I had a friend that was selling FM and got sucked into buying one that was supposedly identical to Gucci Bamboo. Yes it was similar but the fragrance didn't last 5 minutes so it was a complete waste of money. She quit selling because no one was a return customer after buying one because they just don't last.

I have his book thickness.
It's very amusing.
I wish he'd do another one.

TBF the high-end perfumes do still use eye-wateringly expensive ingredients like orris absolute.

moglovesmincepies · 10/12/2020 09:02

Agreed. I would love a bottle of dot by mj but can't justify £50. Superdrug did it half price the other year I'm hoping they do again. In the meantime I bought rouge absolute from next for about £8 and it's really nice and lasts well! Might just stick to that Grin

Formerbabe
I meant it's disturbing to realise that by buying Designer house perfumes, we are effectively propping up their businesses so they are able to remain in business , which means very rich people get the privilege of buying their clothes.
Whereas we riff raff, who can barely afford their perfume, havent a hope in hell of ever being able to buy any of their clothes.

@notafanoftheman

Lutens actually ;-) But you must understand my tone I was just laughing at the mashup between high end perfume and the town of Luton.
Lost on me. No understanding here either until you just explained it.

Perfume parlour are brilliant for dupes, including the high end stuff.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 10/12/2020 09:08

If you want to buy perfume made from small producers where perhaps the ingredients are what you're paying for I'd recommend Roullier White - it's a small boutique in South East London and they have a perfume room I've never seen the like of. I have spent similar £ here to the big fashion house perfumes for really divine smells. Then you know you're buying real sandalwood lavender/bergamot/etc and supporting a small industry and a small business

Meant to add Were being used in more ways than one. But because if their slick greasy marketing We are paying them for the privilege.

Hopefully places like that will start to take off more

But you must understand

Fucksake that should read "misunderstand" not "must understand". I should stop dictating my messages, typing is much safer.

Madbengalmum · 10/12/2020 09:17

Sorry. Thickhead but your comment, “It's ludicrous. You're paying for packaging, the ingredients cost next to nothing. The same scientists who make Creed's perfumes make Lynx deodorant. It's all just branding. I'm a big perfume fan but only buy samples on eBay anymore”

is nonsense.. Creed is still made in the Parisian factory it has always been made in, using very traditional infusion techniques and the highest quality ingredients, which is why if you buy the real thing it is expensive. It is not produced en masse which is why certain people want to buy certain batches.

ButtWormHole · 10/12/2020 09:18

I can’t be bothered to RTFT but have the MLM huns suggested FM perfume yet?

BobbinThreadbare123 · 10/12/2020 09:22

I don't really wear much perfume at all but I did get some Penhaligon's stuff in their sale. It was still very pricey. A friend bought me a mini bottle of something and I really like it; looked up the full size bottle and won't be buying it! I just look for nice smelling moisturiser now. TK Maxx is good for that.

LakieLady · 10/12/2020 09:23

This is going to make me sound really snooty, but I'm convinced that they use an ingredient in cheaper perfumes that smells awful on me.

Whenever I've tried a dupe or cheaper alternative, they start to smell sort of chemical and slightly acrid, and some start to smell even worse, like a tomcat's just pissed on me.

I've also had to abandon some of my old favourites because they've changed the formulation and they smell fake on me (Vent Vert, for example, smells nothing like it used to on me).

Some perfumes have always smelt weird on me (when Rive Gauche was all the rage, I was gutted I couldn't wear it because I loved it on other people, but on me it smelt remarkably like a milder version of the chemical smell emitted by the dyeworks near where I grew up).

So I'll be sticking with my Mitsouko, Dioressence and Amarige, and just use it less often.

GabsAlot · 10/12/2020 09:23

can we still not test them then not even if the assistant sprays it for you

not going to be buying anything new then-i used to wait for the dsales anyway cant afford full price

Tana433 · 10/12/2020 09:30

I wear Sarah Jessica Parker's Lovely as my everyday scent and pay around £22 for 150mls which im happy with. Occasionally i treat myself to a Philosophy fragrance which is around £60 for 30mls. I couldnt justify that price as an everyday perfume.

QueenPaws · 10/12/2020 09:32

There's some cheaper ones that I love, but yeah I get it. I really want MMM bubble bath but the price...
cheap ones I like
J lo glow
Next summer sun (EL bronze goddess dupe)
AG cloud
Vanilla sugar
The clean range (usually via TK maxx or all beauty)
Zara (pastry in Paris is a fab gourmand)

Perfume parlour has some decent ones, I got 2 recently which are great copies - musc ravageur and byredo rose

MillyA · 10/12/2020 09:34

I agree OP. I like chanel no.5, coco chanel madamoselle and D&G light blue.

DH got me the D&G last year for Christmas and this year I said I'd like coco chanel - until I saw the price! I've told him not to bother.

Daylight robbery.

Its not being snobby. I've also held off from saying the same thing. And I'm no perfume snob. Like I said I will happily wear a Britney one day Chanel the next, bit there's something in the dupes that I've tried that has a fly spray element. Maybe I haven't tried the right ones.
