Three weekly black bin collection

Our local council is going to change the black bin collection to 3 weekly, green and recycling 2 weekly the same BUT they will collect food waste weekly

When black bin collection changed from weekly to two weekly there was an outcry, but slowly people got used to recycling more

so is it ok to change to 3 weekly black bin collection now? and everyone will just adjust again

or will it make life difficult for some

We have black bins collected every three weeks. It's fine.

Recycling and food waste every week. Green bins for garden waste every fortnight.

It does encourage better recycling, it's a good thing IMO.

We’ve been on three weekly bin collections for years. And two-weekly food waste collection, which gets grim in summer.

It’s fine. We use smaller bin bags so it’s easier to squeeze more into the big bin. The only issue is we don’t have room for anything extra like when we have a clear out or additional packaging at Christmas/birthdays (obv anything recyclable goes in those bins, and we try to keep packaging to a minimum but it’s not always possible, so we have fairly frequent trips to the tip)

Ours has been 3 weekly for nearly 3 years. Recycling and food waste is weekly and garden waste which pay £35 extra for us every 3 weeks.

I find its fine, we’re a family of 5. But i have had to order another set of recycling boxes as we are regularly full to the brim.

Booking a slot in the recycling depot is a pain in the arse as they are 10 miles away, open 10-4 and the only time i can go is during lunch hour. Queuing there is terrible and only one person per car. So DH cannot come with me (even if he could) nor help me to empty the car but can take his own car🤷🏼‍♀️

Im lucky to have a corner in the yard to throw the tip stuff -like cardboard etc- till it's time to go. Post-Christmas willbe a complete nightmare.

If my green bin gets full by week 3 i put my wellies on and climb in and squash it down.

Oh those nappies🤢 they are left on the street in yellow hazard bags. I wish to god the council would supply those households with boxes to store them.

We have been on 3 weekly black bin collection for years, if you have a child under 5 in nappies you can apply to have them collected weekly though instead.

Recycling is weekly but our recycling bins are small.

Its fine, you just think more about what you can recycle.

Ours is 3 weekly i hate it. With youngvDC and nappues in the bin, urgh. I dont mind recycling but wevalwats seem to have more waste. I now pay for extra collections through a company called Busy Bins which has solved the issue for us

You can flush veggies and soft fruits (ie not apples)

In my old flat I installed a waste disposal in my kitchen sink because it was much easier. But my new house we don't produce enough waste to come close to filling the bins and our water is now metered

It's fine. There's just the two of us but it would take months to fill ours, I think it's the 140 litre one (smaller than recycling) and we fill a 12 litre bag a fortnight.

Ours is fortnightly and I would struggle if it changed to 3 weekly. The only bin collected weekly is the food waste. However over the last several months it hasn't always been collected due to staffing issues. Just yesterday it wasn't collected meaning I've had to bag it and put it into my black bin as there's nowhere else to put it.
We are a family of 5 but I'm also a childminder so we do have quite a lot of food waste and recycling. I do not qualify for a bigger bin and cannot used a paid for service as nowhere to store a euro bin.

not if you use reusable nappies and I guess thats what they are trying to do, is get people to change habits. Not sure many will change but it may prompt some.

Ours is 3 weekly although it's not a black bin, and I'm a childminder so have multiply shitty nappies everyday and I can't control what typ people use. It is a nightmare if I'm honest. Even when I am really quite strict with recycling the bin is still jammed by the time its being emptied, usually because out "recycling trolly" is far too fucking small and flimsy to hold the amount of recyclables we gmhave every week so eventually some need to go in the green bin.

That wouldn't be okay for me as we don't have a food waste collection. Literally black bin, recycling or garden waste. Majority of people only have the black and recycle one. Every 2 weeks for us.

I have 4 neighbours, as corner plot, and out of the 5 of us only 1 household would struggle. The other 4 households produce one third of a black bin per fortnight (so in reality we could go monthly)

I have been investigating more recycling ideas and found that things like bread bags and banana bags can be recycled in with supermarket shopping bags at the stores

crisp packets can all be recycled to a woman locally who gets paid for this and the money goes to charity - she collects a range of items that I had no idea could be recycled

Im thinking of getting a separate box to recycle a range of the things she collects as then I can wash everything and then take to her as I pass once a month. found her on facebook and there are others up and down the country that do the same - there are 3 in are local area

Unreasonable in my view. Even if there is capacity in bins etc, there are people who will have had a clearout, or some waste that is put in the general bin not another one, and those who are just wasteful compared with the average household. Rats and other small animals will be happy of course.

We don't have a food waste collection in our area either, but they are going to introduce this with the 3 weekly collection

We would cope because ours is fortnightly and we don’t fill it. But it would be very grim in the summer months. Horrendous if you have a child in nappies too.

Ours is fortnightly and sometimes I don't bother putting it out because there isn't enough for in there to make up for the hassle of wheeling the bin down the path and steps so it ends up being monthly. Three weekly wouldn't bother me at all.

@SkedaddIe I really hope 'flush' is a typo or the sewage treatment staff will be in trouble!! The advice to only flush pee, pop and paper is for a very good reason and other things have awful consequences in the pipes and treatment works.

Ours is two-weekly, black bin and recyclables alternate. We very rarely struggle if we miss a black bin day, so can go a month if need be. That’s with the smallest size black bin. We have a compost bin and don’t generate much food waste that can’t be composted. But if we miss the recycling collection it’s a nightmare. So your set up sounds fine to me. Mostly you get used to what you have and adapt.

We have just had the same announcement. Does the woman who collects for charity money live on an estate beginning with W?

I live in a household of several adults and we almost never fill our general waste bin completely. We currently have fortnightly collections and going to three weeks would make no difference. Sometimes we've forgotten to put the black bin out so it doesn't get collected for a month! We still manage.

Anything which reduces waste going to landfill is a good thing.

@ivykaty44 I think we must live in the same area! Sounds complicated but I guess we'll get used to it?

When our bins went to fortnightly there was a massive upsurge in fly-tipping. There’s a field in front of my house that gets bags of household waste dumped on it. There’s a country lane I sometimes use that has black bin bags that have been filled with all sorts of crap, dumped and split all over the place. I dread to think what it’ll be like if it goes to three weekly collections.

we don't have food waste collection- I have one of those compost boxes for fruit and veg waste that I take to the compost bin in the community garden.
Recycling and Landfill is supposed to be twice a week (when I started reading the thread I thought you meant 3 times a week rather than once every 3 weeks). I regularly have to report missed collections though, ongoing battle with the council, but its a block of 24 apartments, with a single large hopper bin for each recycling and landfill, I've just had a quick look online and it looks like 660 litres, so just under 5 regular household bins.
What really aggravates me is that the council have allowed several new developments of apartment blocks without bin storage, so they just dump theirs on the street, and also while our collections are frequently missed, the council blocks on the other side of the road NEVER seem to have that problem
