Three weekly black bin collection

ivykaty44 · 20/11/2020 07:06

Our local council is going to change the black bin collection to 3 weekly, green and recycling 2 weekly the same BUT they will collect food waste weekly

When black bin collection changed from weekly to two weekly there was an outcry, but slowly people got used to recycling more

so is it ok to change to 3 weekly black bin collection now? and everyone will just adjust again

or will it make life difficult for some

Our bins were changed to once every 3 weeks years ago, but we have a box for plastic, card, and glass that are collected weekly. Also food waste bin weekly. On top of this they have got rid of nearly all the public bins on the estates, because people were adding their household rubbish to them, we were all warned they would do this if it carried on, but it's still ridiculous. The estate is pretty disgusting, rubbish everywhere, people fly tip, and things blow out of people's recycling all the time.

They have been on about changing our bin collection to every 4 weeks! I really hope they don't, every 3 weeks is a really struggle for some families here as it is.

G3orgeOrwell · 20/11/2020 09:20

Maybe they should reduce council tax if they are going to provide less services? At many councils the leader earns more than the PM!

Proudboomer · 20/11/2020 09:23

Fortnightly here with no food waste collection but then I don’t have food waste as we either eat it, compost it or feed it to the local wildlife.
With 5 adults in the house I really need more recycling bin space if we are to recycle correctly. I have invested in a can crusher already to free up some space as I always try to buy soft drinks in tins rather than plastic bottles or glass. We are also in a hard water area so I buy bottled water for drinking and easily get through a 12 pack a day and I use an old wooden mallet to flatten these.
I can’t help thinking if someone with a busier life than wouldn’t have the time to spend an hour or so a week crushing cans and flattening plastic to fit it all in the small recycling bin and would be more tempted to throw it in the normal rubbish.

TicTacTwo · 20/11/2020 09:26

I'm in a weekly collection area. I hope that my council aren't reading this

ekidmxcl · 20/11/2020 09:28

No matter how many people come on here to say how little they put in their black bin, this infrequent collection will cause fly tipping. I would be very annoyed about the recycling being only every fortnight as well. All our recycling boxes are filled every week. Big busy household including dog. It’s cost cutting by the council and really not a great idea. All you need to do is to take a walk on bin day in a family area and see the recycling and black bins filled.

Bwlch · 20/11/2020 09:29

Maybe they should reduce council tax if they are going to provide less services?

Their argument for reducing the service is that it reduces the annual increase.

SillyOldMummy · 20/11/2020 09:33

Blimey I think that is hard, but I guess councils need to save money and people will adjust. Lots of jumping up and down on things to flatten them?!

We have weekly bin collections, weekly recycling collections, and fortnightly green waste (costs extra per annum, many neighbours share bins). I try really hard to cut our landfill waste down, but our total waste has been worse in 2020 because of shopping online instead of getting produce at the local market. So much sodding packaging!

Three weekly would be unpleasant in summer, but manageable for us. I guess I would move our bins to the end of the garden so we couldn't smell the nappies so much. Once the toddler is potty trained, we could manage three weekly. I am reluctant to switch to reusable nappies, my kitchen/house isnt set up for soaking and washing and drying them. I have greened my life a lot, but it's a step too far for my husband in particular who would find it revolting and would complain constantly about it.

I really do pity large families and people in small houses where there is no room for waste indoors, or no garage. All our recycling goes in the garage, so we can cope with the random things that can only be recycled at the dump or at the supermarket (which I now rarely go to as I shop online due to covid!).

PivotPivotPivottt · 20/11/2020 09:35

We have 3 weekly collection and no food waste collection. It's great fun in the summer especially when you add nappies to it.

FairfaxAikman · 20/11/2020 09:38

@Aroundtheworldin80moves

Nappies hanging around for three weeks in summer... Nice...
Go cloth. We did when lockdown happened and disposables became hard to come by due to panic buying. While we still have to use disposables at night and at granny's (as she refuses to use the clothe even though they are poppered all in ones) it's massively cut down on waste.
Caspianberg · 20/11/2020 10:30

Ours has been collected once every 4 weeks for years. cardboard every 3 weeks. Plastic every 6 week.
We can have food waste collected but don’t as we have own compost bin in garden and very little other food waste.
We are currently using reusable nappies and wipes due to this, so yes it’s been a good factor in making people look at what’s thrown IMO.
Our black bin is barely 1/4 full now after a month unless we are having a sort out ( most of that is recycled or to charity if possible)

Caspianberg · 20/11/2020 10:37

Oh and glass and metal isn’t collected at all here, but you are fined if it’s found in normal waste. We just wash out, collect in baskets and take to local glass/ metal bank ( they have them at most supermarkets and random areas where we live)

thetemptationofchocolate · 20/11/2020 11:28

We've been on 3-weekly collections for some time now. We are able to put more things than we used to in the recycling collection though so it's not been too bad.
The only issue we've had is when they missed our road out and wouldn't come back for another three weeks. That was in May/June so it was hot and it all reeked.

SageRosemary · 20/11/2020 14:56

Council don't collect here. We use a private operator and pay each time the bin is lifted and emptied.

We've put out our waste bin 5 times since the December last year. We possibly won't need to put it out again until January. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 teenagers. So about once every 10 weeks.

We compost our vegetable peelings and don't really generate any food waste.

kowari · 20/11/2020 16:20

I think that is awful, they made a mistake missing out your street and should rectify it

I wondered how long it would take.

Do you know what a miniscule proportion of your council tax goes on bin collections and how many other services it actually funds?

ivykaty44 · 20/11/2020 19:57

Maybe they should reduce council tax if they are going to provide less services? council tax account for approximately 2% of expenditure on refuge, so not likely to be a lot of a refund if your council tax is £200 a month thats £2 per month and you want a refund on that amount?

If my green bin gets full by week 3 i put my wellies on and climb in and squash it down.

@MrsDThomas It hurts like hell when the bin falls over as you are climbing out.

Frazzled2207 · 20/11/2020 20:04

We’re fortnightly and don’t fill it (family of four) so imagine it is doable. That said people round here complain all the time that one isn’t enough. We managed (just) when we had two in nappies.

Obviously recycle as much as you can, but otherwise don’t worry too much.

Absolutely they should sort. A few times our bin collection hasn’t happened and it was always sorted the following day. Local councillors like sorting stuff like this.

firstimemamma · 20/11/2020 20:09

We use cloth nappies so would be fine with the 3 weekly collection. It's fortnightly here and on bin night our bin is half full or less.

beela · 20/11/2020 20:16

@ivykaty44 yes! And some special water.
