To think this meme is pretty unpleasant?

I have a "friend" on Facebook who as well as believing in all the other conspiracy theories also believes COVID is a mass plot to control us etc. (This isn't really around COVID hence not putting it on that board). She's uploaded the attached pic tonight which I think is pretty offensive - I appreciate other people have different views to me, but this seems to imply that because I'd wear a mask this is comparable to Nazi supporters. AIBU to think she's gone a bit far with this one?

honeyytoast · 17/11/2020 18:52

Yeah I think it’s offensive

thepeopleversuswork · 17/11/2020 18:52

It’s idiotic. If it were likely to be taken seriously it could be offensive, yes. As it is I think it makes her look profoundly stupid.

Merryoldgoat · 17/11/2020 18:53

She’s an idiot.

Plussizejumpsuit · 17/11/2020 18:53

Yes it's offensive to people who were persecuted by the nazis and its offensive to people who wear masks. As it's not the same as being a nazi.

MMM2 · 17/11/2020 18:53

Very oftensive

Tootsietoot · 17/11/2020 18:54

Ignorant, embarrassing and offensive. Well done twat head is what I would think.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 17/11/2020 18:54

Its fucking stupid tbh

feistyoneyouare · 17/11/2020 18:54

That's really offensive. YANBU.

AhoyMeFarties · 17/11/2020 18:55

Your friend is an idiot

Diva66 · 17/11/2020 18:56

Batshit crazy friend.

ShortSilence · 17/11/2020 19:00

It’s offensive, but also so wilfully stupid that I’m struggling to feel the offence because I mainly feel pity towards your incredibly hard-of-thinking friend

Cam2020 · 17/11/2020 19:02

Moronic and offensive.

Knackerelli · 17/11/2020 19:03

That is horrendous.

Bluntness100 · 17/11/2020 19:04

Yes of course offensive but quite frankly it’s more just idiotic in the extreme, embarrassingly so.

TrickorTreacle · 17/11/2020 19:05

The bigger issue is why are we referring this as an internet 'meme'?

A internet meme starts out as an inside joke then it becomes viral. Examples are Hampsterdance, Badger Badger, Crazy Frog, Chuck Norris jokes, All Your Base, Harlem Shake, Lol Cat, Nyan Cat, Advice Dog, Matilda Challenge, Will It Blend? Some memes are more annoying than others, but the fact stands that these memes have a lasting impression, to the point that they almost become a household name.

'Memes' that you see posted on Facebook or WhatsApp aren't really memes because they are forgotten in a few days time. 'Meme' has become an excessively-used word. I'd avoid using that word.

Sparklesocks · 17/11/2020 19:06

Yeah it hugely trivialises the nazis and their impact by comparing it to wear a mask. Not the radical image she thinks it is, just tone deaf and demonstrative of a lack of critical thinking.

GameSetMatch · 17/11/2020 19:10

Your friend is an idiot!

Who’s that man? what a brave guy.

Erm, no, the ‘bigger issue’ is not semantics. It is someone sharing something profoundly offensive to several groups of people. Whether it’s a meme or not is literally the least important part of this post Hmm

Yes, that is the real big issue here - the usage of the word meme. That’s what we should focus on. Biscuit
RayOfSunshine2013 · 17/11/2020 19:17

I’d find it funny, however people are easily offended these days

PeggyPorschen · 17/11/2020 19:18

It's rather sad and pathetic that a mask-refuser and conspiracy theorist picture themselves as a hero.

I'd just ignore. The simple fact that they are allowed to refuse masks, express themselves and even demonstrate in the streets to express their point of view show how stupid they are.

justconcedealready · 17/11/2020 19:19

Batshit, stupid and selfish. The trifecta friend!

user15368536798589 · 17/11/2020 19:19

You think it's offensive so you're re-publishing it for more people to see? Hmm

Brefugee · 17/11/2020 19:19

do what people do with sexist or racist jokes and ask her to explain it to you because you don't get it.

OrigamiOwl · 17/11/2020 19:20

Not sure the use of the word meme is the issue here...
