To ask if you've ever had compensation for complaining..?

So I was in Tesco last week getting our weekly food shopping with my DP, when a member of staff came out of the warehouse section with a large trolley filled to the brim with produce to fill the shelves with.
The staff member didn't check behind him before moving out onto the shop floor, and pushed the trolley into my ankle causing a nasty gash, and quite a lot of blood 🥴
He was lovely and really very apologetic, I was hurt but not extremely and although he offered an ambulance 😆 I politely declined.

The store asked to take my details to make note of the accident, which I complied with and left my name and address etc for their accident log.

Anyway.. fast forward to today, and I've received a lovely letter in the post from the store manager, and a store voucher for £150. I'm completely blown away!

it got me thinking, as i remember once a friend of mine once said her sister complains as a hobby to companies and receives large amounts of free items, vouchers etc...

have you ever been sent something from a company following a complaint?

I have just sent a thank you letter back to Tesco, as I am completely shocked and so grateful for their lovely gesture!! 💖

I complained to McDonald's last week because my fries were missing from my drive through order. I was expecting them to say we'll give you fries next time you come but they sent me a £5 voucher.

I complained to Morrisons because I bought some of their chocolate buttons, ate half and then realised they were a year out of date. They sent me a £20 voucher and I did not get ill so that was nice.

Animum2 · 21/02/2021 16:43

My Mil got a £10 voucher from Morrison's as one of the staff was rude to her and upset my mil, weirdly she hasn't seen her in the store since

MyOtherLifeIsAFairytale · 21/02/2021 16:55

Good outcome and well done, Tesco! I think - if I hadn‘t expected that at all - I’d pay some or all of it forward. Do a mahoosive shop and donate it to the nearest foodbank for instance. W a nice Sunday roast dinner for ourselves or something?

PensionsYes · 21/02/2021 16:56

I received a £250 apology from AVIVA pensions after they

Ignored TWO pension transfer request for weeks
Sent the wrong £ amount to the new provider...
Lots of computer says no calls in between. Nobody knew wtaf was going on... Felt so frustrated!
They then lost the money! No explanation.
Failed to resend the correct amount of money. I spent so long on the phone...
With the 2nd transfer they just TOTALLY forgot it for about three months. I gave up until I had time to start again.

Luckily I gained on the delayed £ moves plus they compensated me. They also sent me a detailed apology-made me feel much better about it but I was pretty furious! So stressful.

British Gas on the other hand... we moved to a rented house. They kept telling me they had set up my DD but didn't actually do it! Despite draining sessions on the phone - they couldn't seem to sort it out.

I ended up paying random amounts, just to try to keep up with the bills which we never received so I was guessing the bills every month and eventually fell into arrears.

They then referred me to a bailiff! I totally lost it at this point! They didn't sort out the DD until I referred them to their complaints Department. Not a bit of compensation for the phone calls and the pointless stress of it all. I’ll never ever go back!

Soubriquet · 21/02/2021 16:58

I once got £30 worth of vouchers for finding a spider in my chocolate bar

Daphnise · 21/02/2021 17:01

I have received compensation from BT for appalling service- but they only did this when ordered to by the Ombudsman- who was also fairly useless. The whole thing took three years!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/02/2021 17:11

Costa used to send me a voucher when I complained about the branch at work. They were terrible.

AlCalavicci · 21/02/2021 17:17

Only a just over week ago I ordered some coffee online from Whittard's , they charged me twice by mistake . I phoned them to get it sorted , they refunded the wrong payment right away ,
Three days later I received a a parcel from them with a fancy copper tin of coffee and some 70% cocoa and a hand wrote note apologising and hope that I enjoy the cocoa as they had checked and I had ordered it a few time in the past .
I bloody love their cocoa !

Spaghettio · 21/02/2021 17:20

When our new (to us) qashqai had a catalogue of minor problems (rear vision mirror falling off the ceiling, no stick to hold the bonnet up which made me question whether they'd done their "Pre-sale check", needing new tyres after 1 month) I complained in writing and over the phone.

I was invited to the dealership and they offered me free accessories. I think they were hoping I'd be happy with some floor mats.

I asked for a roof box, roof bars and fitting! The look on the managers face was priceless. I think that'll be the last time he offers accessories without a price cap.....

My friend complained that her moule marinier was a bit cold and that there was some broken shell in it. I was really embarrassed (as a serial non complainer) but the chef came out and thanked her for the feedback. He was training up new chef/s and could tell from her complaint what they needed to tighten up in the kitchen. She got a replacement meal and both our meals were complementary and free drinks.

m0therofdragons · 21/02/2021 17:27

My cousin slipped on a wet floor in McDonald’s when she was 10/11 and she cracked an adult tooth. McDonald’s pay for her private dental treatment for life and gave her a few thousand pounds. It was their error for not putting up a sign but they were very generous.

UnsolicitedDickPic · 21/02/2021 17:33

Slightly outing, but I was in a pub and digging into the bottom of a packet of crisps when it was pointed out to me that the bottom of the packet had been nibbled by something from the outside. Didn't complain so much as bring it to the attention of the staff, and got a free meal with drinks as compensation.

I was a bit Hmm about eating a meal in a pub where rodents had been at the stock but, having worked in pubs and knowing how frequently rats got into the cellar even in places with the very best of intentions, I took a punt on it.

drumst1ck · 21/02/2021 17:39

Not me, but a friend fell down a lift shaft in a well known coffee shop. Stepped in backwards without looking as she was pulling a trolley in (staff) and the floor wasn't there. Broke most of her lower body and was lucky to survive, coffee shop will be paying a lot of money for a long time to her.

TroysMammy · 21/02/2021 17:39

I complained to Rimmel that their Kate Moss mascara smudged beyond belief. They apologised and asked me to choose 2 products from their range and I had a mascara I'd previously used and a lipstick in my favourite colour.

readingismycardio · 21/02/2021 17:42

Oh my I have a hilarious story. I once ate at a very popular chain restaurant and both my bf (at the time) and me got a terrible stomach bug. I emailed to complain as I thought it was serious, not seeking for compensation, but I wanted them to check whatever happened. Then I got a letter from them with sincere apologies, telling me to enjoy the £30 voucher enclosed. THERE WAS NO VOUCHER 😂

Chewingle · 21/02/2021 17:44

@SuperbGorgonzola

At the moment DH is wrangling with Vodafone after they've continued to charge us for broadband every month for four months since we cancelled. He's rung every time it happened, spending hours on hold, and they've apologised and told him this time it's definitely cancelled, but each month the money has gone out again. They've not offered anything.
Just cancel the DD surely?
AlmostSlimJim · 21/02/2021 17:46

I have had:

£15 pizza hut voucher for complaining the toilets were dirty.
£27 from burger king because they short changed me.
£6.20 for KitKat's with no biscuit in them.
£20 from a bank for sending me a letter in someone else's name, then £20 for them incorrectly compensating me when I called them to tell them.

AND

£150 from a bank for complaining that they refused to take my cash (as per their new at the time policy!).

I used to be quite good complaining!

Asda on the other hand gave me a £10 gift voucher when a ready meal had hundreds of flies in it. I was not impressed.

McDonald's and KFC are bad at compensating.

WatchWatch · 21/02/2021 17:47

Oh and I got 6 months free mobile contract.

drumst1ck · 21/02/2021 17:54

Oh, once I got some lovely vouchers to spend at Frankie and Benny's because they massively screwed up our meal. On the way home I looked at them to find they were already out of date...

catinbootsx · 21/02/2021 17:56

I used to be a manger for a well known pub chain and would 'promo' ie give people free meals/drinks/whole bills if they complained. Would be easier than listening to their moaning and it wasn't coming out of my pocket Grin

CompleteBarstool · 21/02/2021 17:58

I recently got a £10 credit on my account from Amazon after their driver delivered a book in a cardboard envelope and left it on the doorstep in the rain.

He didn't ring or knock (we were in all day - lockdown!), didn't use the clearly labeled "Parcels" box and didn't even mark it as delivered (if he had done then I would have been able to rescue it in time)

Afolnerd · 21/02/2021 18:11

I once found a little bit of plastic in my dogs dry food. Company was fantastic, sent me prepaid envelopes etc to send the bit back to them and investigated fully, they then sent me 4 massive bags of the dry food and a huge box of treats and toys which lasted my tiny dog about 2 years!
Also I used to work at elc and I had an online order which arrived with the boxes all smashed up due too rubbish packing in the warehouse, so I send a quick email to let them know. They clearly didn’t look into my order as they would of seen the staff discount. They sent me a £20 gift card!

abc31 · 21/02/2021 18:14

One Christmas Eve we went for a fancy buffet breakfast at a posh hotel near us (that celebs and footballers sometimes stay at). I was munching into my fry up when I felt something hard, which was small and white. I have dreadful teeth so presumed it was a filling breaking off (again).

I persuaded my dentist to give me an emergency appointment, it transpired it was a bit of tooth, but not mine. Yuk. The hotel gave me a voucher for two free breakfasts when I emailed them, though it did slightly ruin my Christmas Eve.

Shufflebumnessie · 21/02/2021 18:14

I complained to Clarins and was very impressed with their response.
I'd been using their hand cream for several years, they changed their forumla and within 2 applications of the new tube I had to go to the GP for medication as it had burnt the backs of my hands.
I wrote to Clarins and recieved a phone call from a manager who was very apologetic and asked what other products I used. Two days later a box of complimentary Clarins products were delivered. There was about £200 of products if I'd had to buy them from the local beauty counter.

This was back in my child free days. I can no longer afford/justify buying expensive beauty products but quite happily use Nivea who also provided great customer service.
Not a complaint but I enquired with Nivea if they provided any small samples of various moisturisers. They took my address and very kindly (& unexpectedly) sent me a variety of full sized moisturisers to try.
