To ask if you've ever had compensation for complaining..?

So I was in Tesco last week getting our weekly food shopping with my DP, when a member of staff came out of the warehouse section with a large trolley filled to the brim with produce to fill the shelves with.
The staff member didn't check behind him before moving out onto the shop floor, and pushed the trolley into my ankle causing a nasty gash, and quite a lot of blood 🥴
He was lovely and really very apologetic, I was hurt but not extremely and although he offered an ambulance 😆 I politely declined.

The store asked to take my details to make note of the accident, which I complied with and left my name and address etc for their accident log.

Anyway.. fast forward to today, and I've received a lovely letter in the post from the store manager, and a store voucher for £150. I'm completely blown away!

it got me thinking, as i remember once a friend of mine once said her sister complains as a hobby to companies and receives large amounts of free items, vouchers etc...

have you ever been sent something from a company following a complaint?

I have just sent a thank you letter back to Tesco, as I am completely shocked and so grateful for their lovely gesture!! 💖

I received a free KitKat from Nestle after mine had no wafer in it - yep, I'm that pathetic. I never complain, but I was having a shitty day and really looking forward to it!

Loads of times....

Had bought a jar of expensive TipTree loganberry jam and despite having only had it open a couple of days in reasonably chilly weather it went completely mouldy. No cash but they send me a variety box.

Was excited to see a premium brand of popcorn selling a large bag of cheddar flavoured as no one had ever sold that here in the UK. Got home and opened it to discover it was actually cheese and onion flavoured. I didn't think to check the small print as there was no mention of onion on the front of the packaging. They sent me a humongous box of 12 different, and somewhat bizarre, flavour popcorns which I shared with my friends - I must admit Christmas dinner flavour popcorn did not appeal to me!

Best ever though was when I bought a box of Sainsbury's own brand cat food pouches as it was the only brand my cats would eat. In the middle of the box of 12 pouches was an empty one labelled as Tescos. I made my cats look at this so they would understand they didn't need to pretend to be so fussy. And Sainsbury's put £10 credit on to my nectar card.

A few years ago I went to our local Focus. It was a nightmare as the tills went down so caused long queues - there was only a young Saturday lad dealing with it. He was so pleasant - and he put up with some abuse . He apologised to everyone for their wait and was genuinely doing his best.I wrote to the manager to say what a credit he was and how he had made a bad situation better. The manager phoned me to say they had called him into the office and he was scared he had done something wrong. My friend is an assessor and had always said things like that help with their qualifications so I am glad I did it.

@WhySoSensitive

I’m a bit of a complainer, as in if I’m paying for a service and it isn’t up to scratch then I will comment on how I’m not pleased with it. I’ve never ever been discounted or compensated, even after being given a fully burnt mixed grill that we couldn’t even cut, the wrong drinks with the meal and a desert dropped on my husbands back. (We never went there again!)
All in one visit?Neither would I! We had a gas meter which was in our dining room. The gas board said they were going to fit a new one outside the house-fine; they took it out, and told us a different department would install the new one. A week later, in mid-November! All our hot water and heating was gas! After complaining, they waived the charge for the new meter and gave us £50 off our next gas bill.

@Obbyydoo

Are you for real or something.!!!

Op has a quite nasty accident in Tescos store and you think its an Over reaction that they sent a gift of flowers and gave 150pounds to her .!!!

What the fuck do you think this is over reaction on Tescos part then?😕

Tescos are bloody Lucky Op, that they were able to fob off Op,
as she is nice and not a more Assertive or Pushing type of person customer, who would insist/demand take it further further, for Compensation, and the bad publicly that would come with it.

What a relief for that Tescos .😕

We got a free meal years ago. We visited a pub that was mainly a foodie pub with tables by the bar area. We were with friends and I was very heavily pregnant. After standing for a while I pulled up a chair from one of the nearby tables to sit down on. (the restaurant was completely empty)
Immediately the landlord came marching over and started shouting at me because sitting was only allowed if you were eating.
So one of the group asked could we have dinner. The reply was the restaurant was fully booked and then we all got slung out. Wrote to the company who owned the chain and we all got a very nice meal and a couple of bottles of wine at another of the companies pubs.

Hi everyone

I am crap,a bit of wimp about complaining about having bad, poor customer experience from restaurants/supermarkets etc in general.

Is there anybody on this Post Thread here who is really good at knowing what to say and do ect, whenever they have recieved unsatisfactory customer service.

As i really would appreciate and I know others like myself would too,
If someone/or anybody here, would do a follow up Post Thread
on how to Complain effectively ect.
😕

I wait in anticipation.
fingers crossed .

A £50 voucher after complaining to M&S head office about terrible service in one of their stores.

A hotel refunded our whole night’s stay because the door handle came off our room door as we were checking out. Wasn’t expecting that, we were just letting them know the handle had broken. It was an automatic refund apparently!

Bythemillpond · 21/02/2021 14:15

Should add we were not being loutish or loud. I was the youngish at nearly 40 and the rest of the group were mid 40s-50s chartered accountants and solicitors who were out for a pint on a mid week evening. I don’t think any of them had ever been thrown out of a pub before.

Crayfishforyou · 21/02/2021 14:16

RBS screwed up our mortgage application. They kept losing paperwork and accusing us of not sending it. After several months of this repeatedly happening we complained officially and got nowhere.
So we complained to the ombudsman with proof of postage and photos of the paperwork being handed over in person.
We got over £800, we cancelled our mortgage application and went elsewhere.

HotelChocolatMMMMmm · 21/02/2021 14:22

I complained to the NHS re my then newborn being seriously poorly and being dismissed as "just a lazy boy". They asked what I wanted and I made it clear I wanted training and awareness for that illness to be priority. They wrote a lovely letter detailing the steps they had taken.

Currently have one in with social care.. not going as well!

Cpl1586407 · 21/02/2021 14:29

@ZombieFan

Sorry OP Tesco didn't send you a voucher because they were being nice. They were bribing you in the hope you wouldn't sue them.

If you had been a bit more assertive your could have got a lot more. I cant believe you actually thanked Tesco for buying you off so cheaply!

This. I used to work in complaints Tesco got off very easy with you.
cautiouscovidity · 21/02/2021 14:29

I had £150 of John Lewis vouchers from HSBC when they made a mistake on my account. I didn't even make a formal complaint so was rather chuffed with that.

I complained when some Cadbury cakes didn't look like the picture on the box and got sent enough vouchers to buy two more packs.

I complained to Next when they couldn't get my click and collect order 45 minutes after I received a text to say it was ready to collect. They told me that the delivery hadn't been unpacked and I should come back later that day. It was an out-of-town Next branch with nothing else I needed to do there and a 10 mile round trip so I was really cross that they'd said it was ready when it wasn't.

twinkletoedelephant · 21/02/2021 14:33

A week before I was due to have my twins I went to tesco for angel delight...the babies absolutely needed the butterscotch flavour.

I took it to the checkout and it wouldn't scan.... the checkout person said they couldn't sell it to me as it didn't scan, and put it to one side... me a grown woman who was 8 1/2 months pregnant with twins just broke down in tears at the checkout , Propper full on snot crying.. scared kid on tills called a manager who led me away and gave me a chair and a glass of water.. when I recovered enough to see what a complete tit I was being I waddled off as quick as I could.

Next day i was sent flowers and a £25 gift card for all the butterscotch angel delight i could eat (they traced me through clubcard)

thefirstmrsrochester · 21/02/2021 14:35

Centre Parcs Whinfell Forest years ago. Dishwasher in lodge wasn’t working, guest services sent someone to fix it within 30 minutes of calling, then they sent a bottle of wine, flowers and box of chocs to the lodge. I was so taken aback that I questioned if they were for us. Tesco missed a bag of fridge produce from my delivery, they refunded the entire cost of the delivery and I got to keep the rest of the substantial delivery. Delighted on both occasions as I hadn’t complained as such.

Slumberdoon · 21/02/2021 14:40

Not that I can think of but I’m very aware that the more vocal kids in the household would get more if I wasn’t extremely scrupulous about maintaining a fair distribution of money. Similarly at work the louder ones seem to get their grievances upheld.

HunterAngel · 21/02/2021 14:42

I written a polite letter to a publishers twice, not complaining as such just pointing out where a mistake had happened. One was an obvious print error where pages had been mixed up so chapters were missing and the second time a book was missing from a set. The first time I got a replacement and a free book, the second time the publisher basically shrugged, decided they couldn’t figure out which book was missing so just sent me three books all featuring the same characters. Luckily one was the missing book!

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 21/02/2021 15:21

That's really generous OP.
I was heavily pregnant at Tesco and their floor lining has lifted up and my trolley ricocheted off it and slammed into my stomach and I had naff all! Not even an apology but I did see next time I went in they had fixed the floor!

rosiejaune · 21/02/2021 15:40

Well I have had costs refunded (eventually) for having to get a train and stay overnight in a hotel when my coach in France didn't turn up.

But in terms of money given for things that didn't actually cost me extra, I have complained to my bank about not being able to get my money out (which did cause me a lot of stress and hassle), and they gave me a token amount.

And my previous (social) landlord gave me some compensation for repairs which weren't done. I lived there for 2 years and they hadn't done them (some of them were safety issues) by the time I moved out, and it took months after that to get the money out of them (which is a set amount based on how many repairs weren't done).

And I got a £5 voucher for chocolate when I contacted the company to let them know that one of their bars had the wrong flavouring in (and to check it couldn't be from the non-vegan version of that incorrect flavour).

I feel like there are other examples, but I can't recall them now.

caringcarer · 21/02/2021 15:52

We went to a hotel in Nottingham and went to check in but reception said we did not have a booking. I fished out my Groupon reservation showing hotel stay for 2 days date and showing breakfast and evening meal on first night booking. Manager arrived gave us room and a voucher for free meal for second night and a complimentary bottle of wine.

When I got divorced the judge ordered pension sharing. They acknowledged my pension companies request for funds to be paid across. Nothing came for 5 months. In meanwhile stock market had plumetted. When money arrived it was less than it would have been if Exh pension company had sent it across within a month which is what they said would happen. My pension company worked out this delay had cost me £888 so I wrote to exh pension company to complain. They replied by sending across £1500 so I gained £512 by complaining.

JackieWeaver4PrimeMinister · 21/02/2021 16:24

I wrote to the DWP, called them, emailed them, recorded delivery letter'ed them for 7 months after saying I'm physically well again so I am going back to work, they still kept paying me ESA. In the end they just said sorry it's our fault keep the money, after months of me stressing out thinking I am committing benefit fraud.
I also once complained to pringles after my tub was only half full, I got a £5 voucher. I also once was at Hawksmoor in London for a swanky meal, I asked for medium rare, but the steak was very rare bordering on blue, we'd waited ages for our food, I was starving so I just ate it. I never complained. The waiter had subtly noticed when I cut it it wasn't what I asked for, took it off the bill without me asking, and comped free dessert for us all. I was gobsmacked, left a good tip.

Eskarina1 · 21/02/2021 16:32

I complained to our when it turned out they didn't mention our mortgage wasn't portable to a new build. They said the only way to fix it was to make it as if we'd never fixed the mortgage so they "had" to give us 3000 as interest rates had fallen.

On the good customer service front, I rang up Barclaycard because I hadn't noticed that my payment hadn't gone out (kind of their error but I should have checked). I explained that I had just had twins. All fees wiped out and I received two massive hampers of goodies from them a few days later.

murbblurb · 21/02/2021 16:40

I got some money for our charity from the TSB following their April 2018 disaster. It was one fairy story after another, wasting hours of my unpaid time. So at least that time turned into fundraising.
