To ask if you've ever had compensation for complaining..?

So I was in Tesco last week getting our weekly food shopping with my DP, when a member of staff came out of the warehouse section with a large trolley filled to the brim with produce to fill the shelves with.
The staff member didn't check behind him before moving out onto the shop floor, and pushed the trolley into my ankle causing a nasty gash, and quite a lot of blood 🥴
He was lovely and really very apologetic, I was hurt but not extremely and although he offered an ambulance 😆 I politely declined.

The store asked to take my details to make note of the accident, which I complied with and left my name and address etc for their accident log.

Anyway.. fast forward to today, and I've received a lovely letter in the post from the store manager, and a store voucher for £150. I'm completely blown away!

it got me thinking, as i remember once a friend of mine once said her sister complains as a hobby to companies and receives large amounts of free items, vouchers etc...

have you ever been sent something from a company following a complaint?

I have just sent a thank you letter back to Tesco, as I am completely shocked and so grateful for their lovely gesture!! 💖

  • this post isn't to say I want to begin serial complaining by the way - I don't think I could, it's made me feel so guilty although it's such a kind gesture. I know some people do, so I'm just being nosey I suppose 😆☺️

I got a £10 co-op voucher because I tweeted that the own brand liquorice allsorts I bought didn't have any pink or blue bobbly ones in the pack!

nancybotwinbloom · 13/11/2020 20:14

Yes.

I used to work for a well known corporate company for a load of well known brands.

We spent all day dishing out vouchers for people who rang in saying they didn't like something.

BashfulClam · 13/11/2020 20:15

Girl I worked with always go pjs ibex if she wasn’t happy and always got compensated. She once complained to a high end cosmetics company when something she bought wasn’t up to scratch, she got a refund, a replacement, free products and a bunch of flowers. Please don’t pursue further compensation for this as the young lad may lose his job,

I once complained in a hotel where I was on a hen weekend, The whole hen party (25) ordered lunch in the restaurant - it took about 30 minutes for a waiter to come for the orders and then about another 90 minutes for the food to come out.

I went to the restaurant manager to see if they would give us a discount based on the rubbish service and he wrote off the whole bill. We still left a tip for the wait staff as it turned out they hadn't got enough staff in the kitchen and there was a massive convention in the hotel on the same weekend. Just bad timing for us to order lunch but we got a free one in the end.

I very rarely complain so was shocked that we got the whole meal comped.

I kept getting weird, sort of soggy, Tangy Toms (packets still sealed so wasn’t that) so complained to Golden Wonder and they send me a huuuge box of crisps - big mix of types and flavours. Grin

At the moment DH is wrangling with Vodafone after they've continued to charge us for broadband every month for four months since we cancelled. He's rung every time it happened, spending hours on hold, and they've apologised and told him this time it's definitely cancelled, but each month the money has gone out again. They've not offered anything.

She obviously isn't pursuing it further.

Pyewhacket · 13/11/2020 20:18

I've got my money back on several occasions but I've never had any compensation.

InTheLongGrass · 13/11/2020 20:19

Yes.
Bought a tablet at the start of lockdown 1 to deal with home schooling. Knew it was going to be longer than usual delivery time from Currys. Before it was even dispatched they sent me an email asking me to review my purchase. Deleted it. 3 messages later (and still no tablet - but still within their 2 week estimated delivery) I caved and filled it in with an accurate review about their review process. Got a voucher a few months later.

I've also had a couple of lovely responses when someone has gone out of their way to be helpful, and I have subsequently contacted HQ to say how fab they were.

sbhydrogen · 13/11/2020 20:19

The amount of money businesses lose due to people fraudulently saying they've not received something, or not liked something is staggering.

That's a very nice gesture, but a bit OTT.

SockQueen · 13/11/2020 20:20

I complained to HSBC after a mortgage appointment where they turned us down based on information I'd already given them and had been led to believe wasn't a problem. Told them they'd wasted my time and delayed our house purchase. Got £150 as an apology.

ZombieFan · 13/11/2020 20:22

Sorry OP Tesco didn't send you a voucher because they were being nice. They were bribing you in the hope you wouldn't sue them.

If you had been a bit more assertive your could have got a lot more. I cant believe you actually thanked Tesco for buying you off so cheaply!

PerfectlyImperfectx · 13/11/2020 20:22

I’m glad your ankle is ok. I agree it’s a lovely gesture. Well done Tesco.

On the other hand, I was once in Tesco and walking down the tinned goods aisle (in the middle - pre Covid) and a can of kidney beans fell off the shelf straight onto my toe. There was so much blood Blush I hopped to customer services where they dressed it for me. Didn’t even get an apology Grin

thinkingoutloud4 · 13/11/2020 20:23

@BashfulClam oh gosh I certainly won't be raising anything at all regarding what happened - the young man was absolutely lovely and couldn't have done nor to try and help. He was a star, and it was absolutely a complete accident. Bless his heart x

My electricity company tried to charge me circa £1400 because they said they’d been underestimating my bills for two years, and that it was my fault because I’d never been at home when they’d ‘tried’ to come to read the meter. The manager tried again and again to suggest it was ‘partly my fault’ for not actively supplying a reading, but I stood firm and threatened them with a complaint to the ombudsman. Long story short, I got the amount halved and a 12-month instalment plan agreed (on which they later tried to renege - I fought that too.) Obviously turned out okay for me, but I wonder how many people in this position are too scared/not sure enough to argue and get themselves into debt to pay?

thinkingoutloud4 · 13/11/2020 20:25

@sbhydrogen absolutely what I was thinking, bless them. They were all lovely about it and couldn't have been any more helpful! I think the blood probably startled them 😆🤣 xx

Told the receptionist (when she asked how our stay was) of a posh hotel how no one had come to fix our TV the day before, despite many phone calls chasing it up, so my boyfriend had to watch an important sport event on his phone.

They refunded the room!!
We had stayed with them before, always recommend it to friends

Doodlebug5 · 13/11/2020 20:28

Not complaining but i once wrote to yorkshire tea suggesting they make a extra large tea bag for extra large mugs. They sent me a massive cardboard box full of tea, a teapot and some mugs.

I also once got charged twice in tescos for a Dvd while shopping, they refunded both amounts which i certainly didnt expect. And i got to keep the dvd.

Obbydoo · 13/11/2020 20:29

It seems a ridiculous over-reaction by Tesco but sadly we live in a world where companies feel they have to do this to stop greedy people money grabbing. Great to see your response by not blaming the lad or Tesco. How about offering the money back to them and asking them to use the voucher for food bank donations so there are winners all round?

Bathwater · 13/11/2020 20:30

I once had some roule cheese from Morrison’s (bought that day), it fizzed in my mouth. Looked at the packet two weeks out of date.
Took it back, they’d cleared the shelf probably having seen their stock error after I bought it so couldn’t get a replacement. Got a refund, apology and a £10 voucher for the store. I was surprised I got a voucher but was nice and manager was very apologetic.
Never felt ill but always look at my cheese for dates now!

Frestba · 13/11/2020 20:31

Well that is completely different from my experience at Tescos where I slid across the floor on what like tinned peaches and bashed my knee very heavily. They couldnt be less interested in even clearing up the mess. I was completely shocked by no accident reporting at all in our branch. Glad you had a good experience tho.

@Obbydoo great minds think alike! We are going back tomorrow for our food shipping and have decided to use this voucher to purchase essentials for the less fortunate to donate to our various local charities ☺️ xx

@Frestba that's awful! Sorry to hear that you had such a horrible experience. I'm also surprised there was no accident reporting in place for you.. I hope your knee is okay. X
