To think Trump could be president again in 2024?

Don't get me wrong I am delighted we don't have another 4 years of the orange toddler to put up with. But since he's only served 4 years can he run again to serve another 4?

He lost but he still had a hell of a lot of votes. He still has a lot of very dedicated supporters. What if Joe Biden at 82 decides not to run again in 2424 and Kamala runs instead and Trump is able to stir up the divisive politics that got him in first time again?? Has this occurred to anyone else? Shudder

They are both as bad as each other, but they need to get some younger contenders for 2024.

ChaBishkoot · 08/11/2020 08:20

It has occurred to plenty of people including those around Trump. As someone who has worked in the Democratic Party for a while though the hard work for 2024 starts as soon as we have recovered from last night. (Although there is Georgia to sort out first).

MistyGreenAndBlue · 08/11/2020 08:21

With a bit of luck, he'll be in prison by then.

With a bit of luck, he'll be in prison by then.

Fingers crossed!

I doubt it. Firstly because I think he’ll have lost interest by then, and secondly, how could he possibly have the energy to run three presidential campaigns? I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

CeibaTree · 08/11/2020 08:23

I doubt he would get the republican nomination again, especially after the way he been acting the past few days. But I guess he might run as an independent. He'll be pushing 80 by then though. Although I guess that hasn't stopped Biden.

Cwenthryth · 08/11/2020 08:23

He’d have to win the republican nomination first. It is possible for sure, but I don’t really think particularly likely. I’d think it’s more likely one of his offspring might run.

FlyingFlamingo · 08/11/2020 08:23

If he does it won’t be as a Republican, they are like rats deserting a sinking ship! Pence is ‘keeping his options open for 2024’ apparently, he’s certainly not backing Trump which says it all really

NastyBlouse · 08/11/2020 08:28

Theoretically, yes he could run again. As I understand it, the rules state that a person can serve two terms — those terms don’t have to run consecutively. And I believe Biden has indicated that he intends to serve a single term.

However, I think it’s unlikely. Some senior Republicans seem already to be distancing themselves from him. The way he’s behaving at the moment is a total embarrassment (appreciate we’re working off a low base already there). If he doesn’t go with dignity this time round, he’ll piss off an awful lot of moderate-to-reasonably right-wing Republican voters, who would otherwise probably have voted for him, because he’ll be viewed as impugning the process and the constitution. Americans are extremely proud and protective of their constitution, and don’t appreciate seeing their own countrymen dick around with it.

Also I think he’ll be buried in legal action as soon as he steps out of office.

I wouldn’t rule out Ivanka or Don Jr running, though. That said, I think Kamala Harris would be a very strong candidate. I’d love to see her as president.

thecatsthecats · 08/11/2020 08:30

I doubt he'd get the nomination, unless I guess he threatened to run as independent.

Both parties can't rest on this - they need to get strong candidates building momentum more or less now.

longwayoff · 08/11/2020 08:31

Age notwithstanding, his ego wouldn't permit unless he could buy it. Donny, as you may know, cannot be seen to be a LOSER. He is a WINNER. Hopefully, he'll be counting the days off his prison sentence.

GammyLeg · 08/11/2020 08:32

I don’t think so - he’d have to keep the Trumpism momentum rolling for another four years with little support from all his backers who will be falling away. I don’t think he can come back from this (thank fuck).

clearedfortakeoff · 08/11/2020 08:32

@AlwaysCheddar

They are both as bad as each other, but they need to get some younger contenders for 2024.
You think Biden is 'as bad as' Trump? Really? I'm fascinated at the moral compass of a person who would genuinely think that.
Suzi888 · 08/11/2020 08:32

Biden has already said he won’t run again. Whether Kamala Harris then runs, I don’t know. Depends how well the party do I guess.

Dongdingdong · 08/11/2020 08:34

I wouldn’t rule out Ivanka or Don Jr running, though.

I think that is far more likely. Maybe an all female presidential race - Kamala vs Ivanka?

Cwenthryth · 08/11/2020 08:36

I could get behind him running as an independent.... it’d be amusing in a schadenfreudesque manner to watch him lose again, plus he’d probably split the republican vote enough to practically guarantee the democrats win again, if Biden doesn’t run for re-election then the dems will almost certainly nominate a woman I’d have thought. So first female POTUS 2024 👍🏻

pinkbalconyrailing · 08/11/2020 08:39

not donald trump himself, he has too many health issues and will not be fit for any office soon.
but I could imagine ivanka getting into politics and starting a campain. if the republican party will chose her is another matter though.

Thewithesarehere · 08/11/2020 08:40

At the moment, Republicans seem to be ditching the Trump lot. If they are facing assorted lawsuits, it won’t work out that well.

giletrouge · 08/11/2020 08:41

The Republican party would not be so stupid as to allow him anywhere near the nomination again. Many senior Reps will be fully aware that he's a poisoned chalice - Mitt Romney for instance, for all that I don't particularly like him, I've been impressed at his capacity to not arse-lick Trump. No. It won't happen. I think when the dust settles the Reps will be stock-taking and regrouping. There'll be no serious inclination towards a second Trump bid.

BrumBoo · 08/11/2020 08:42

He won't get the chance again. He was the 'different' candidate that the anti-Obama supporters wanted, but this world moves fast and in 4 years he will not have the same influence that he did in 2016.

Ivanka though, yes I could definitely see the Republicans and their voters going for a Trump dynasty, especially if Biden doesn't do well (let's face it, Joe isn't Trump, but he's no Obama either).

OlympicProcrastinator · 08/11/2020 08:44

He’s fucked any chance he had by his behaviour since the result. Nobody wants a president they’ll have to physically drag out of the White House should they decide to vote him out again.

FlatulentSproutEater · 08/11/2020 08:47

Ivanka will be in there like a rat up a drainpipe. All we can do is hope and pray that that never comes to pass because she would be even more of a disaster than her truly awful father.

neithernor · 08/11/2020 08:47

I didn't vote for Trump, but at least he didn't start any new wars, unlike Biden's former boss. Biden himself has a long record of being a hawk, and arguably bears some responsibility for far more deaths than Trump. Speaking of moral compass and all.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/11/2020 08:57

Trump didn’t start any wars but he was such a poisonous and divisive influence on society. Also his Covid denial and inaction will have contributed to the deaths of many. There’s so much to say but you won’t want to know of it so I won’t waste my time.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 08/11/2020 08:57

I do think he's going to embark on a four year destructive spiral - both mentally and physically. In his eyes, 'loser' is the absolute worst insult you can throw at someone. The fact that he uses it constantly himself is very telling; it's like an obsession. So yes, he'll fall headlong into the waiting arms of QAnon and my guess is he could become quite reclusive (except for the times he's certain of an adoring audience). And of course he could go to prison Smile If America wants to vote for whatever emerges at the end of his four year exile, then God help us!
