US Elections - Trump or Biden, who will win?

JustSaying101 · 03/11/2020 19:55

Intrigued to see who everyone thinks will win the current US presidential elections? I wouldn't personally vote for Trump, but I think he will manage to win another term. What do you think?

YABU = Trump will win
YANBU = Biden will win

Either way, it's a sign that the country continues to be divided maybe more than it has been in decades

Isn't it just - the split between urban/rural and coast/interior states is vast Sad

KooKooKachu · 04/11/2020 18:29

I'm hoping Biden wins. MI, WI and NV would give him that win. Trump can go fuck himself.

Notthegoldenchild · 04/11/2020 18:33

I think it is more the split between unintelligent right wing conspiracy theorists and left wing Biden supporters.

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 18:34

If this was the UK we'd be preparing for a hung parliament.

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 18:35

Nevada have said no more results till tomorrow morning (their time).

Livelovebehappy · 04/11/2020 18:46

I really thought with so much hate against Trump that there would (should) have been a landslide victory for Biden. It’s so close. Biden will win, but he’s going to have a huge job on his hands to re-unite the country. There’s obviously something Trump has said that resonates with nearly half the country, despite some very real issues with his approach to some things.

Kljnmw3459 · 04/11/2020 18:51

@Notthegoldenchild that's not a helpful generalisation, it's better to address the concerns that has led so many to vote for Trump. Sure, some of it is conspiracy theories etc but there's a whole host of other reasons too.

Notthegoldenchild · 04/11/2020 18:59

@Kljnmw3459 but I have no other reasons for knowing why anyone voted trump to be honest. Every other American President has had a reason for being elected but this one? I see no reason bar stupidity and belief in a narcissist. He of course was not the popular vote and I agree with whomever congressperson earlier on CNN said that this needs to be looked at, the entire electoral vote needs to be sorted out but we have what we have right now and right no, Biden is winning and I am fucking delighted!

I think he tapped into people's biases and made it "ok" to be vocal about stuff that a lot of people thought but weren't allowed to say.

I don't agree with his views at all btw, but I realise swathes of people do.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2020 19:11

You'd think so wouldn't you? As said, if it had been anyone but Biden it could easily have been that landslide Livelovebehappy mentioned, but instead the Democrats have created a situation where they may have to invoke the 25th before long - and they'll almost certainly need another candidate before 2024

Toilenstripes · 04/11/2020 19:17

Addressing the concerns that led people to vote for a racist, bigot is what got us into this mess in the first place. Liberals, and I’m one of them, were so busy navel gazing that we didn’t realise that there are 10s of millions of racists in the country. Many have been brainwashed by a steady diet of Fox News.

Crankley · 04/11/2020 19:25

What a choice - a mad old man or a senile old man. I feel sorry for Americans but maybe this is what is needed for them to do something about their political system to result in intelligent, capable candidates.

Livelovebehappy · 04/11/2020 19:28

You can’t label everyone who didn’t vote Biden, as a racist and a bigot. 18% of POC voted for Trump in this election, not a lot obviously, but if he was a racist, surely that number would be zero? Rather than labelling people who didn’t vote the way you did as racists, bigots etc, maybe it’s more a case of actually asking the people who have voted Trump, why they did? That’s what Biden needs to do; unite, not divide.

DBML · 04/11/2020 19:30

@Notthegoldenchild

This is my take on why people would vote for Trump. I don’t think bad people or stupid people vote for Trump, I think fed-up people or people who are rebelling against political correctness vote for Trump.

Some on the left have become really preach-y. Everyone who doesn’t agree with them is a racist; or an ageist; or prejudice; or transphobic; etc
They talk about ‘tolerance’ and yet have little tolerance for other people’s views...because they’re right! They can come across as sanctimonious; set-righteousness and there are proclamations that people should share their wealth, support others, take the knee, demonstrate shame for the acts of our ancestors and a whole host of other things.

Now obviously this is not what every left-leaning person is like and like with the right, it’s always the ‘worst of’ that are shouting the loudest and putting other people off. So when you don’t want to go left, where do you go? There’s no moderate party, there no one ‘normal’ out there to pick...so you lean the other way to rebel against the ‘political correctness’ that makes you angry, uncomfortable, offended or just tired.

I spend a lot of time in Florida and met some good good people there. Open Trump supporters who refused to allow me to go through a ride queue alone, who adopted me into their family and offered me their snacks and drinks and refused to go on the ride without me, when I was held back in the queue. They stayed and waited for me, letting others ahead to fill the seats they could have had...a small act, but still kind, sweet people. Trump supporters are not bad, they just don’t have anyone else to vote for and don’t want to go to the left.

It’s the same in this country. I voted conservative simply because labour went too far left for me. And I feel proven right because people scream how selfish I am for doing so.

So anyway, I hope one day we can all meet somewhere in the middle. Respect each other’s opinions as long as they don’t hurt anyone and treat everyone as an equal. Until then, we’re stuck with difficult choices.

KooKooKachu · 04/11/2020 19:30

Biden has won Wisconsin

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 19:35

Unless NC or GA has a surprise surge for Biden, we're not going to know until Nevada declares, which isn't going to be until tomorrow evening (our time).

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 19:37

BBC 'live' coverage has been really poor in my opinion.

fullofhope100 · 04/11/2020 19:43

If Trump gets in again - I DESPAIR

WitchesSpelleas · 04/11/2020 19:45

If I had to place a bet, I'd bet on Biden at this stage.

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 19:49

Yes the bbc live updates have been very poor, I agree. Much better info from following US journalists on Twitter and other websites.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 04/11/2020 19:55

What a choice - a mad old man or a senile old man

Indeed Sad

You really do have to wonder why the parties/public do this to themselves; it's almost as if those attracted to the job are, by very definition, the least suitable for it ... see also Nixon, Dubya, Clinton and too many more

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 19:58

Trump figured out that Clinton and Obama did very well for the professional classes but that blue collar democrats have had worsening living conditions for years. They weren't all racists, and the fact the rust belt is less pro-Trump this time shows they obviously didn't like what they got so some of them changed their vote.

Trump certainly delivered on the racism after all in the last 4 years so if that was your reason for backing him you'd be delighted with him.

Mumofsend · 04/11/2020 20:01

I do find it astonishing that either candidate is the best that is on offer. It's not like they have a small pool to choose from

Brightonbabe5 · 04/11/2020 21:17

A bit late in the thread, trying to catch up on the news.. Has trump any way of a getting win? (Hopefully not!)

Wherearefoxssocks · 04/11/2020 21:30

@Brightonbabe5 yes he does, but he has to win Pennsylvania. It looks as though Biden doesn't as long as he gets Nevada.
