Quote Indiana called for Trump, ITV report. No surprise there, sadly.

How is that even possible - have they been counting votes all day?

Indiana deadline for postal ballots is before close of in person voting, so I guess the answer is yes.
However kentuckys postal deadline is 6th November, possibly academic as the state is as red as Donald's tie. But that's why Press should not be "calling" results and tabulating them as official

TitoTipples · 04/11/2020 00:20

I hate the calling of states before votes are counted... Vermont is declared for Biden with 1% of votes counted. It always rankles me!

I was thinking of shy Biden voters too, tobee. I can see it being a thing.

BruceAndNosh · 04/11/2020 00:24

Neither candidate is going to concede based on calling of results by press.
Heck, one candidate might not concede based on actually final vote counting.

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 00:24

I also think the hatred of elite and media is underestimated.

And yet Trump IS the elite, and Fox IS the media.

So that's not straightforward.

And actually we've seen some of that in the UK, where some Brexiteers' language was about hatred of some despicable elite... until they wanted Boris Johnson in, and then he was born to rule.

So the words "elite" and "media" get thrown around as hate signals, but they don't correspond to reality.

Other than despairing (or shrugging) at the way smoke and mirrors have replaced observable facts, I'm not sure how to think usefully about that.

lionheart · 04/11/2020 00:27

My god, projections should be outlawed.

PhilSwagielka · 04/11/2020 00:27

‘Elite’.

Hmmmm.

occa · 04/11/2020 00:28

Think it depends what sort of area/state you're in really, whether you nail your colours to the mast or are a 'shy' voter.

Some families are really torn by opposing politics, so I sort of get staying quiet in some cases.

I'm way too opinionated for that and my right wing family members call me 'the commie' Grin

TitoTipples · 04/11/2020 00:28

Agree - projections shouldn't be allowed - especially as polling stations are still open in the rest of the country...

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 00:29

Well, indeed, there's that too, Phil.

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 00:29

Florida looking ugly for Biden

PerkingFaintly · 04/11/2020 00:30

Joining the distaste for projections.

Count the bloody votes. Announce the numbers. We'll know when we know, and not before.

JamieLeeCurtains · 04/11/2020 00:30

I think a lot of people got 'fooled' into protest voting in 2016 around the EU in the UK and Trump in the US, and now they've seen the actual real life consequences they won't get fooled again.

PhilSwagielka · 04/11/2020 00:30

@PerkingFaintly

Well, indeed, there's that too, Phil.
I know some people will think ‘that mental bitch sees antisemitism everywhere’ but there is an awful lot of talk about globalists and the NWO and shadowy cabals from some if Trump’s loonier fans.
Mrsmorton · 04/11/2020 00:31

Shit the bed. I honestly have never felt further from sleep even though I know I'm wasting my time staying up!

Damnation to dry November. Gin

BruceAndNosh · 04/11/2020 00:31

300,000 postal ballots still unaccounted for somewhere in the USPS system....

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 00:32

Trump is doing better in Miami Dade (Florida) than he did 4 years ago and seems to be in the lead there. It was the one area Hilary Clinton did well in...

JamieLeeCurtains · 04/11/2020 00:33

@RedToothBrush

Florida looking ugly for Biden
Where are you seeing that, @RedToothBrush?
RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 00:33

Lewis Goodall @lewis_goodall
NYTimes giving Trump 84% chance of winning Florida
Would keep him alive

PhilSwagielka · 04/11/2020 00:34

Isn’t Florida one of the redder states?

Apileofballyhoo · 04/11/2020 00:34

Biden just took the lead in the early votes in Florida. Panhandle not in yet.

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 00:35

Jon Sopel @BBCJonSopel
There are very encouraging numbers from #Florida and Miami Dade for @realDonaldTrump. Although @JoeBiden is ahead, it's by a way smaller margin than Hillary Clinton was 4 years ago. This is the Cuban-American vote coming out for the president

Fear of 'communist' Joe?

Apileofballyhoo · 04/11/2020 00:36

I don't know if it's enough of a lead if today's votes go against him.

BruceAndNosh · 04/11/2020 00:36

I don't think I can take the microanalysis on CNN anymore...
it is what is is

I'm off to bed and I see you all (possibly on thread 108 by then) in the morning.
