That's a bit depressing, Ew.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/11/2020 13:17

So DH (the pessimist) just sent me this.
(Not sure why I married him TBH)

Just read this in NYTimes:

“Legal experts say the election may complicate the response because the president has broad discretion to sidestep legal restrictions by declaring an insurrection, which would allow him not only to take control of state National Guard troops, but also to deploy the Army or Marines.

If the president decides unrest rises to the level of insurrection, there is little Congress or the courts can do to stop him, legal experts say..”

EwDavid · 03/11/2020 13:22

Sorry to be a doom monger. I seem to only be able to accept the depressing news!

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/11/2020 13:25

(Drugs wearing off?)

Daniel Dale thread describing Trump on F&F this a.m.

Trump is now on Fox & Friends, sounding more subdued and talking slower than usual. (He was up late doing rallies.) He repeats his usual false claim about how 2.2 million pandemic deaths were initially expected, then touts his pandemic response in the familiar manner.

PearlsforRuth oh yes. Smile

So Joe Biden's soundtrack is the iconic Eminem song One shot. One opportunity. One moment.

Trump's is YMCA.
Say no more 😂😂

Just found this thread, apologies if this has already been posted, but interesting data on how many votes have already been cast in Florida, and the breakdown by voter political affiliation registration - very close (assuming people vote by affiliation)

Don't worry EwDavid I blow with the wind changing my mind on how it's going to go.
Maybe this moment will be the best moment - not knowing....

That's partly what I'm afraid of! This last glimmer of hope could be the best it gets for a long time..

Apileofballyhoo · 03/11/2020 13:32

Oh goodness, Ew, I didn't mean you were a doom monger! I'm just trying to not get my hopes up even though I'll be so upset if Trump is in, no matter how much I try and stop myself hoping. The world seems so full of problems at the moment.

"After a visit to nearby Lenox Hill Hospital to clean up a nasty scalp wound and two cracked ribs, Churchill ended up being fine. What would the next 20 years of 20th century history have looked like if that car had been going just a little bit faster?"

made me think of this song:

Both Trump and Biden went to their church of choice today. Biden went to mass at St. Joseph’s in Wilmington, DE, and Trump went on Fox News

I'm so nervous today I can barely concentrate! I voted last month (overseas voter), so now just the long wait to see how everyone else voted. If you want to see what the final set of polling data says, take a look at this: fivethirtyeight.com/features/final-2020-presidential-election-forecast/

If you really want to disappear down the rabbit hole, the FiveThirtyEight website has all kinds of stuff to read and watch and play around with. I particularly like the 'Pick your battleground winners' interactive map.

I agree the FiveThirtyEight stuff is worth a read. How you interpret it definitely defines whether you’re in the glass half full or the glass half empty camp!

occa · 03/11/2020 14:01

I'm so nervous. Fuck. If he gets in again he and his supporters are going to be totally totally out of control. It's going to be a bloody 4 years.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 03/11/2020 14:11

Also on the ballot: The future of Trump’s family political dynasty
If Trump wins, his family can set the political dialogue for the better part of a decade. If he loses, the Trumps may have to search for power elsewhere.

Hoping that those who want to vote in person today are not stopped by intimidating idiots.

Worried by Trump now saying there will be violence if he doesn't win. Stand back and stand by boys....

AcrossthePond55 · 03/11/2020 14:33

Our telly is off, at least for now. But then again, it's only 6.30 am here.

The final rallies were as one would expect them to be; Joe urging people to get out and vote and not to be frightened OR intimidated. Scrotus urging people to get out and vote and not to be frightened OF intimidating others.

CaveMum · 03/11/2020 14:35

One thing that I hope comes out of this election is that the Dems realise they need to stop picking the “meh” candidate. They need someone charismatic, as well as smart and savvy.

Oh and if both parties could consider a nominee under the age of 60 that would also be great!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/11/2020 14:40

Every picture of that family I see, it looks as if Barron is taller than Trump.

Trump must absolutely hate it if it's so!

Songsofexperience · 03/11/2020 14:49

Just popping in to say how much I miss a certain idea of America. The last four years have felt long and surreal. My US friends all sound very tense, even the usually most upbeat and optimistic people I know.
The outcome will have a huge impact on the UK too.
Thanks for keeping these threads going. I'll try to follow the whole thing until the results are called.

Apileofballyhoo · 03/11/2020 15:03

What time are they expecting each state to declare a result?

BruceAndNosh · 03/11/2020 15:03

Well I distracted myself this morning with my last game of golf before lockdown starts. After a chilly wet start, by the 4th hole it was a glorious autumn day, so happy.
Then on the 12th tee, Trump's name came up, the election was discussed, and my game went completely to pieces.

The reason the conversation turned to Trump?
Someone was asking who they could legitimately call a Pillock without fear of rebuke.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 03/11/2020 15:10

Thinking about the Trump family after he loses: a lot is being made about how Ivanka and Jared have made international connections, and can call up Zuckerberg whenever they feel like it, and suchlike. I am unconvinced. People tend to shy away from a toxic brand, and though people may have cosied up to those two when they were standing next to the president of the United States of America, they may not be so keen to be associated with members of what becomes seen as a criminal family. It all slightly depends on how many law-suits are brought and against whom, but I don't see Trump's taxes (or lack of them) just vanishing on 21st January 2021, and fraud, once it has been noticed, tends to go on being brought to mind.
