I have been by politics over recent years and can hardly bear to look at this US election. I will try to stay calm @lionheart.

I feel a lot is riding on this, even more than last time.

lionheart · 02/11/2020 20:32

So much. Sad

CaraDuneRedux · 02/11/2020 20:32
That's terrifying.

WSJ on the too little, too late approach:

www.wsj.com/articles/for-many-police-departments-de-escalation-training-is-a-response-11598470239

'American cities often increase their de-escalation training for officers in the wake of a shooting, but there is less focus on de-escalation in the initial teaching of officers.'

Wow, a Stanford University study has found that 18 Trump rallies were responsible for 30,000 Covid infections resulting in 700 deaths 😱

Hi all - was on these threads under a different name for the first few months before I took a break for mental health. Now needing all the links and information here to get me through the next few days.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 02/11/2020 20:52

Welcome back Startup Smile

Good news re the Texas drive through voting. Will help tomorrow - Harris County includes Houston which is mostly Democrat leaning.

lionheart · 02/11/2020 20:54

Welcome back. Smile

The map showing countries without armed police is an eye opener. I hadn’t appreciated how fortunate the U.K. is in that respect at least.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/11/2020 21:01

Thing is, I've lived in countries with armed police (Australia, Germany and others) and they don't behave like the USA police.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 02/11/2020 21:57

That Stanford report: "They found that the events led to over 30,000 new cases in the country and likely resulted in over 700 deaths, but recognized that the deaths were “not necessarily among attendees.” "

I think that makes it a whole lot worse, actually. Not content with risking themselves, these loons then put others at potentially fatal risk.

Annie may be too much for some Wink but hopefully Joan is always welcome.

Once again I’m abroad for Trump related stuff (now no longer teaching in secondary I take holidays in Jan/Feb and November for a bit of sun).
I watched the inauguration four years ago mostly on CNN (why do they keep running the same segments over and over ad nauseam?) and was horrified (but cheered up by the women’s marches). I so hope that I’ll watch his downfall this time. So glad I got away before lockdown...

snowballer · 02/11/2020 23:07

Just joining in ahead of tomorrow. So nervous.

This is an excellent thread on Twitter - read it all. It's SO good.

megletthesecond · 02/11/2020 23:16

Watching. Feeling sick but hoping for a positive result.

AcrossthePond55 · 02/11/2020 23:51

I have my list of 'busy work' to keep me occupied tomorrow until about 4pm (7pm EST). I'm hoping between that and MN I'll keep sane until the polls start to close.

We've seen so many yahoos driving around with their Scrotus flags flying, honking and yelling. We've decided to just stay in and lock our gate tomorrow morning. Even though we're pretty rural, there are still idiots abounding.

MerchantOfVenom · 02/11/2020 23:53

That Twitter thread, snowballer... I mean, where’s the lie?

America is imploding, aided by millions of Americans. It’s incredible to witness.

I hope the majority of Americans vote for democracy tomorrow, and bring it back from the brink.

@Butterer

I have no connections with the US but I am nervy for you all. I don't really drink but the thought of tomorrow is making me want to watch it all unfold with a bottle of whisky and from under the duvet.
I've told myself that the one thing I will NOT do tomorrow is drink as it tends to shorten my fuse when I'm under pressure. Now, a hit on a bong is another matter. That'll just calm my nerves.
lionheart · 03/11/2020 00:42

What is it with trucks, flags and Trumpies?

Blueberries0112 · 03/11/2020 00:43

It's a country thing. God, guns, trucks, and Trump
