Do you know anyone who has won the lottery

And what was the outcome?
Has it all gone?
Are they happier?
Are you the lottery winner?

Posting because I am one of those people that think lottery and competitions such as the this morning one, are fake.

I trutat most people on MN are decent normal people who won't lie.

Yes!! 22 years ago I was almost 21 and it was our next door neighbours who won it. £1.9 million. They chose not to be public but someone contacted the local paper anyway and told them and got the woman’s age wrong by a few years ie said she was 49 instead of 46 Grin

They bought a nicer house in a posh area and gave some to their siblings but I remember it caused a lot of trouble as one sibling got given their old house ( which was about 5 years old ) and the others got cash.

They bought their daughter a business as she was in a low paying beauty type job and she has done very well. They also set up a company themselves which I see advertised now and again. My family lost touch with them around 10 years ago but I imagine they’re still doing well. They weren’t exactly poor to start with either which obviously helped.

Yes, my best friend from school was in a syndicate at work that won. I don't know the amount but enough to:
Both give up their jobs
Set up trust funds for 3 children to put
them through university.
To move to and buy a beautiful villa in a
warm country
To buy each child a small house when they
settled down
To travel to China, Japan etc instead of
Broadstairs each year.

They'd had a few miserable years so was very pleased for them and they haven't changed inside at all. I, however, never buy a lottery ticket as it's money down the drain.

A friend’s parents won just over a million.
They’re elderly so we’re advised by Camelot to spend the money.
Friend partner is very sick and they could really do with financial support.
Friend’s parents gave each sibling £10,000!
The money sits in the bank waiting until hmrc get hold of it.

I knew someone at work who won. Think it was about £900k. She paid off her parents mortgage, bought herself a flat and quit work to retrain as a vet as she could now afford the training.

GoodbyePorpoiseSpit · 27/10/2020 07:11

Years ago a local family won about 200k. They were already really pretty wealthy and were embarrassed - they forbade their children from ever mentioning it. They bought a new roof on their big old house and went on a cruise. Then invested it.

A friend of mine won £50k on a scratchcard. He was an alcoholic but instead of spending it all in booze he said it was like finding a golden ticket in the gutter. He cleaned up, got a job and never looked back. This was about 12 years ago and he's still sober and doing well.

I know two other people who've won 'life changing' amounts...a school cleaner and a hairdresser. Both lived happily ever after as far as I'm aware!

SquirrelFan · 27/10/2020 07:20

@Chamberlai what a lovely story! Like a Hallmark film!

nicerbeing · 27/10/2020 07:20

There is an absolutely huge euro millions winner local to me. Sadly the money didn't make her a nice person.

jackfruitz · 27/10/2020 07:22

I know two, one won a million on the lottery and bought their dream house but is now selling to downsize. Another won a million on a scratch card (!!) bought loads of houses and went on lots of lovely holidays but has run out of money now so selling all her houses and now works as a cleaner.

Doodlepip23 · 27/10/2020 07:22

My relatives did (in Canada) - not the top prize, but a substantial amount. They got themselves a holiday home and lived comfortably for their rest of their lives.

M0rninMayhem392 · 27/10/2020 07:24

My work colleagues were in a syndicate & won 11k each
I wasn't in the group
I was happy for them

gretagreengrapes · 27/10/2020 07:24

I didn't know them personally but someone in my town won it, went public with it and horrible things happened like threats to kidnap their teens walking home from school for ransom money and they had to go into hiding. 😳

MiddleClassMother · 27/10/2020 07:26

One of my close friends won in a syndicate and managed to pay off her mortgage, move to a posh area and buy a brand new mercedes in cash. She put the rest in savings. I'm not sure how many people were in the syndicate agreement but the amount was pretty significant.

FreshfieldsGal · 27/10/2020 07:27

A distant relative of DH won a million. They paid off their mortgage, bought a villa in Portugal, not sure what they did with the rest. They own a day nursery and carried on working though.

I used to do the lottery but stopped ages ago, DF always called it a tax on the poor.

pinkearedcow · 27/10/2020 07:28

Chamberlai that's lovely.

SpilltheTea · 27/10/2020 07:29

Yes, they quickly spent it all on materialistic crap, drugs and alcohol. They're now currently in prison for killing a boy due to drunk driving.

fishonabicycle · 27/10/2020 07:31

Yup. An acquaintance won something in the region of about £15 million. It's real. He and two mates made a pact years before to give each other a small percentage if any of them won - so one of my fairly close friends got around £500,000.

pinkearedcow · 27/10/2020 07:34

I don't know anyone personally, but there is a book called Lottery which has an interesting background. It was partly inspired by the author's father's $6 million lottery win.

I know someone who won not too far off 10 million. They disappeared so no idea how they are doing.

RunningThrough · 27/10/2020 07:34

Sister of a friend won £50,000 from This Morning. She shared it out between family :)

pinkearedcow · 27/10/2020 07:35

Wow. Do you have a link? That must have made the news.

Why bother playing if you're going to be embarrassed about it? Sounds like they pretended to be embarrassed, they weren't exactly rejecting it or giving it to charity. It's all still theirs. Grin

I think I know someone who has, but it wasn't enough for them to be able to stop working. Either they won the lottery or they have a lot of debt, because they definitely don't earn enough to buy the stuff they buy. Don't think it was an inheritance either, unless they got it before the person died I guess.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/10/2020 07:46

I won a pound along time ago.

It hasn't changed my life. Sad

PatchworkElmer · 27/10/2020 07:50

I won £900 a few years ago. It paid for DS’s pram and a few extra baby bits.

... It hasn’t changed me as a person 😂😂😂
