Do you know anyone who has won the lottery

And what was the outcome?
Has it all gone?
Are they happier?
Are you the lottery winner?

Posting because I am one of those people that think lottery and competitions such as the this morning one, are fake.

I trutat most people on MN are decent normal people who won't lie.

I actually knew 4 people! Goodness knows the odds of that to be fair!

First was 20yrs ago, we were 18. Male friend won about £150k. He ended up buying a house abroad cheaply.

Second was when my DC's were tiny, I would clean 3 days a week. One of the houses was purchased for the daughter of a lottery winner.

Third a work colleague-Who I only worked with a week before she won! Not sure of the amount but big enough her and her husband took early retirement and bought a much bigger house.

Fourth, local couple who drank and gambled it, they ended up living in a caravan, now in a local council house (no need for it, they won over half a mil on the lottery.)

Just realised I know a filfth!!! Another local couple in my village. It was a card win (top prize) I don't know exactly what they did with it, but the social media picture holidays have been great the last few year!

Halliehallie9828 · 27/10/2020 07:56

Family member of mine won, enough to pay of their mortgage, all debts and gave each of there children/grandchildren a 2 week holiday abroad.

lunar1 · 27/10/2020 07:57

One of the school mums I'm friends with won 10m quite a few years before I met her. Only me and one other parent know where their money came from.

They work hard and run the companies they invested in, definitely not fake.

cptartapp · 27/10/2020 08:02

When I was a district nurse the pharmacy shop. we used won the jackpot in the first year. The assistants all retired and the pharmacist bought the business. He was lovely.

Laiste · 27/10/2020 08:03

A friend's parent did the lottery once and won 50k Shock

They bought a second hand sports car, went on a cruise, got some work on the house (they were already mortgage free) and have put the rest (15/20k i think) away to give towards a deposit for their son when he finally decides to move out.

Once ... just did it on impulse and won 50 grand ...

Poptart4 · 27/10/2020 08:04

A family near me won the jackpot twice! Dont know how much but it was several million. They didnt go public but everyone in the area knew. They stayed very down to earth and the father made his teenage son get a weekend job while he was still in school.

A friend of mine's brother won 1 million about 15yrs ago. He bought a normal sized house outright, fully decorated and furnished it with all brand new stuff. Both him and his wife bought brand new cars and they gave all their siblings/parents afew bob. The rest was fritted away on expensive holidays and other stuff. It was all gone within 10 yrs. But at least they're mortgage free.

WonderMoon · 27/10/2020 08:06

My friends Mum won 100k on a scratch card back when I was in college. It was in the local paper which my mate was really embarrassed about. My mate got a new car and they redecorated their home.

cherrybakewelllll · 27/10/2020 08:07

@Poptart4 that must be the same family I know, in the south near an airport?
I actually got married at their house wayyyy back but apparently they spunked a lot of their money and had to sell it?

bridgetjonesmassivepants · 27/10/2020 08:08

Not the lottery and not millions but my dad won nearly £200,000 in a casino. He had just been retired a few months and although my parents were fairly comfortable this made the most massive difference to their retirement. My sister and I both got £10,000 and they spent the rest. They did up their house, bought a nice car and went on really amazing holidays.
I'm glad they spent everything because they both died before their 70s - they really enjoyed themselves and made the most of their windfall.

cherrybakewelllll · 27/10/2020 08:08

An ex of mine got 5 numbers and the bonus back when that meant decent money. He bought a house, nothing massive as we are in an expensive area but it basically gave him a massive leg up on the property market and he started his own business.

Ridikulusness · 27/10/2020 08:14

@nicerbeing

There is an absolutely huge euro millions winner local to me. Sadly the money didn't make her a nice person.
Me too. £164m by any chance? Horrid woman before so it was never going to go well...
Werk · 27/10/2020 08:19

A relative of mine won around £120k when they were 18, when the lottery was quite new (5 numbers and the bonus ball).

In a way, I think it ruined their life as at that age it was a fortune (back in the 1990's you could buy a sizeable house in the SE for that) and they didn't bother with further education or getting established in a career - they basically messed about for a few years, spent all the money and at 25 had to start looking for a proper job.

Ding123 · 27/10/2020 08:19

My DM's friend won a substantial amount years ago. Not sure how much but it was life changing enough for her and DC to move to a posh part of London (from the north), buy a decent property and set up a business.

Some years before that when I was a teenager and still at home, she and her DC came to stay with us for almost 6 months after fleeing domestic abuse from her ex. Then my DP helped her find a job and place to live, helped decorate it and supporting her however they could. DM never mentioned it but I think she was hurt when she heard her friend had fled the area after the win without even a goodbye or keeping contact. We were happy for her because she deserved the win after all she'd been through but nobody was going to beg her for money fgs!

pontiouspilates · 27/10/2020 08:20

DH won £1800 about 29 years ago. Not a lot of money, but I was just about to go on mat leave and this enabled us to cover the mortgage to give me another couple of months off with DS, so we were delighted.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 27/10/2020 08:22

Yes one of my cousins

Well under a million but still a very significant amount which enabled them to buy a much bigger house and go on some holidays

And then they won about 250k in another competition!! ( not lottery, cant remember what it was though i have a feeling it was a work thing)

Nothing since

Nishky · 27/10/2020 08:24

Someone I worked with. About to lose their house. Went to local shop to hire a video, found a pound in his pocket so bought a lucky dip - won 50k- paid off mortgage arrears, holiday to Tenerife, some new clothes and then both carried on working but with a weight off their shoulders.

Nonamesavail · 27/10/2020 08:26

Yes.

10yrs on they still live in same house. Moderate 3 bed semi. They do help charity and volunteer. Don't drive a fancy car. I think I would like to live my life now but without work and money worries.

Roussette · 27/10/2020 08:27

I joined this small company and the 6 employees told me what had happened a few months before.

The boss was a narcissistic nasty woman. They were all in a syndicate. Boss used to pay it every week and collect any winnings which went back in the pot.

The company wasn't doing that well and one day she called them all in on a Sunday. And there was a row of envelopes, one for each person. 2 of the staff started crying, assuming it was their notice. Nasty boss kept saying 'I'm sorry it's come to this'. She was revelling in their discomfort.

They opened their envelopes. They'd won the equivalent of £11K each.
God she was a cow.

bellinisurge · 27/10/2020 08:28

I won £75 once and stopped playing. I figured that was, odds on, the only win I would have.

Whammyyammy · 27/10/2020 08:28

OH friend won £100k on a £1 scratch card. Him and his GF had just bought their first house, they planned to spend a little and clear 10k extra off the mortgage each year.
Not enough to retire, but certainly changed their lives a little.

ShopTattsyrup · 27/10/2020 08:28

A girl I worked with had won something around 200k on a scratch card about 5 years earlier. She bought a house outright and was mortgage free at the age of 23. She was quite open about it because she pointed out that the money was gone (there was nothing for people to hound her for) but it did mean that her wages went a lot further each month so she could afford nice holidays etc.

Persipan · 27/10/2020 08:31

I know someone who won a six-figure sum. It was incredibly helpful for them as they were struggling financially at the time; it enabled them to get that sorted out and made a real difference to them.

EmbarrassedUser · 27/10/2020 08:32

You should look up the video on YouTube of an Australian guy who’d won a large amount on a scratch card. He was asked to recreate the moment on camera with another scratch card in the same store and won something like $250k 😆😆 So Mad!!

Sassanacs · 27/10/2020 08:35

Yes, my aunts MIL won about 5.5 million and gave 1.5million to her 2 children. They were already well off.

My aunt/uncle alienated themselves from the rest of the family and relationships continued to sour.

We all have a laugh about it because we have no idea what it was all about.
