And what was the outcome?
Has it all gone?
Are they happier?
Are you the lottery winner?

Posting because I am one of those people that think lottery and competitions such as the this morning one, are fake.

I trutat most people on MN are decent normal people who won't lie.

@EmbarrassedUser

You should look up the video on YouTube of an Australian guy who’d won a large amount on a scratch card. He was asked to recreate the moment on camera with another scratch card in the same store and won something like $250k 😆😆 So Mad!!
And wasn't his first win after he'd been in a coma?

@Roussette

I joined this small company and the 6 employees told me what had happened a few months before.

The boss was a narcissistic nasty woman. They were all in a syndicate. Boss used to pay it every week and collect any winnings which went back in the pot.

The company wasn't doing that well and one day she called them all in on a Sunday. And there was a row of envelopes, one for each person. 2 of the staff started crying, assuming it was their notice. Nasty boss kept saying 'I'm sorry it's come to this'. She was revelling in their discomfort.

They opened their envelopes. They'd won the equivalent of £11K each.
God she was a cow.

What a bitch...

I know a girl who won £50k on the lottery, She bought a car and then pretty much wasted the rest.
She is now back where she was before

Chocolateandamaretto · 27/10/2020 09:22

My uncle won a few hundred thousand. He was already not a nice person and the win didn’t help. He is now bankrupt, hassling my dad for his inheritance from my grandma’s flat which hasn’t been sold yet, and in hiding from the tax office in a different country. He had multiple secret affairs whilst jet setting with his win money and it turns out he has young kids in another country.

Basically a massive cliche!!

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 27/10/2020 09:40

Next door but one were in a syndicate that won. They got their roof done and went on holiday to usa. I think they must have tucked most of it away somewhere.

goldenharvest · 27/10/2020 09:42

Yes, bought a lovely big house. Put their children through private school. Carried in working etc as the money wasn't enough to stop work. Marriage broke down, but both remarried and wife is now my lovely SIL. She had enough to buy another, not quite as big, house and happy with my. dB

unmarkedbythat · 27/10/2020 09:45

Sort of. My cousin's ex partner, the father of her younger two children, won the millionaire maker a few weeks after he left her. I don't know whether it made him any happier, from what I can see it certainly hasn't been used to make his children's lives any better.

gwenneh · 27/10/2020 09:45

My mum’s cousin won a million, two or three years ago.

I believe they just paid off the house and some debt, plus some of the kids’ college fees. They weren’t too badly off before, it just made things that much more comfortable.

gwenneh · 27/10/2020 09:48

Oh and now I’ve just remembered, someone my father was at school with won the jackpot, then a few years later won something like another 250k!

No idea how it’s impacted him though, as we don’t know him well.

AuntieMarys · 27/10/2020 09:49

Yes in USA. A massive win...$64million.
They are not happy people. Nothing brings them joy

ExclamationPerfume · 27/10/2020 09:52

My friends Dad won £10000 on a Loose Women competition. He entered online so he didn't even pay to enter.

I know someone who won £125000 on the lottery. He was a criminal and used it to buy drugs to sell. He was caught and sent to prison.

Eastereggfan · 27/10/2020 10:05

An ex's friend won £12 million. They were very generous. Went to their wedding in Portugal and it was the most amazing trip ever. Felt like we had won the lottery. Most down to earth couple. Sad I'm not part of their circle anymore ha!

PotteringAlong · 27/10/2020 10:08

Someone I worked with won £10k on the postcode lottery.

notso · 27/10/2020 10:13

A friends parents won £80,000 in the 90's they paid their mortgage off which was under £10k and that's it. The rest is in the bank.

My Mum knows a couple who won £4-5 million. Their accountant is always on at them to spend more or it will go to the tax people. They've given a lot away but live just as the always did.

MrsExpo · 27/10/2020 10:15

Yes. My mum won £250,000 on Rollerball (I think that's what it was called). She took the number from her supermarket loyalty card!! She and dad were inter 80's at the time, so they bought a new three piece suite, refitted their bathroom and had new windows in their bungalow. My dad passed away shortly afterwards (he was very ill when mum had the win) and mum just lived a very quiet life after that.

She too passed away a couple of years later and left my brother and me enough to pay off our portages, so we all benefitted. Smile

Nat6999 · 27/10/2020 16:29

We won the thunderball at work in 2003, £250k, got £15k each. I was pregnant with ds, I bought myself a car, all my baby stuff, decorated the nursery, bought my maternity clothes & finished bits off around the house. Weird thing was nearly everyone in the syndicate was married when we won, since then everyone but one have got divorced.

CSIblonde · 27/10/2020 16:34

Yes. Middle aged couple no kids, already very wealthy as both high earners. They won £250K around 10 years ago & immediately bought an even bigger home. Still together & happy.

PaulineScrambledPhones · 27/10/2020 17:00

Someone DH used to work with won £10k on a scratch card. They spent it all on a Fiat 500 (when the 500 had just come out).

DelilahDingleberry · 27/10/2020 17:02

My friend’s mum won. It didn’t solve their problems but it’s made life easier in some ways for sure. No sourness that I’m aware of. They kept it all fairly quiet.

Doyoumindifislytherin · 27/10/2020 18:03

Local family in my area who I know won big on euromillions. 10's of millions! They didn't even move house and stayed in the village. Friends sister won a substantial amount in a work syndicate. Payed for a house and a few luxuries.
Back in the 90s my friends aunt got 5 numbers and the bonus ball too. There was also a girl in our town who one 250k at 16 years old. No point playing now as it's hit our area so many times already!

CakeRequired · 27/10/2020 20:09

What a waste. Buy something that depreciates in value the second you sign the papers.

ilovesooty · 27/10/2020 20:18

@Laiste

A friend's parent did the lottery once and won 50k Shock

They bought a second hand sports car, went on a cruise, got some work on the house (they were already mortgage free) and have put the rest (15/20k i think) away to give towards a deposit for their son when he finally decides to move out.

Once ... just did it on impulse and won 50 grand ...

I worked with someone whose sister won 1m the first time she played. She bought a house for my colleague. I only found out when she resigned to go self employed and she told me how she was able to take the plunge.
Twigaletta · 27/10/2020 22:03

I swear a couple who are friends of friends must have. They have a breathtaking house and amazing cars but she dabbles in Forever Living as works as a receptionist. I'm assuming it was life changing in a way but not enough to live off forever.

Osirus · 28/10/2020 01:03

I do!

She and her husband subsequently split. They shared assets and she retired early. She loved living the lavish lifestyle initially but it wore thin because she was so unhappily married.

She’s since remarried and is far happier now. Lives in a semi-detached and lives a frugal lifestyle. She has the money but doesn’t feel she needs to spend it. She has a lovely long retirement ahead of her.

She’s no different to how she was before the win.

Pebbledashery · 28/10/2020 12:01

Yes. Someone I knew won 500k on a scratch card. He pissed it all away on drugs and escorts. He owned a flat at the time and could have been mortgage free by now.. But do you know what happened... It got repossessed!! Last I heard he's back at the old work place he walked out from and is living with his mum.
