To have never tried mince pies?

I've never tried a mince pie and I'm going to try one for the first time this Christmas. What is it about them? Do you eat them alone or with an extra?

I like them best warmed in the oven with a big dollop of brandy cream. They are rich and I don’t eat many over the Christmas period but at least once with the brandy cream.

Glitteryone · 25/10/2020 01:45

I have never and will never, they look absolutely disgusting.

grassisjeweled · 25/10/2020 01:47

Zapped in microwave for 10 seconds, add brandy butter

hillfda · 25/10/2020 01:49

I used to think they looked revolting as a kid just because of the fruit. For some weird reason I'm craving one at this random time after looking through Christmas threads. It does sound nice with cream, maybe I'll have to try them sooner than I thought. Blush

With a cup of tea! Yum!

dorispiffle · 25/10/2020 01:52

Microwave to warm then add brandy butter and cream. Lush.

GlummyMcGlummerson · 25/10/2020 01:54

I wish I'd never tried mince pies. Revolting things

stackemhigh · 25/10/2020 01:58

Much prefer a Kipling’s Apple pie or Apple and Blackcurrant pie at a push. Will eat a mince pie if they’re there but don’t buy them.

I’ve never had Marmite.

ZombiePara · 25/10/2020 01:08

YANBU.

I only had my first one last Christmas (under self-duress as I was put on the spot and didn't want to seem impolite).

Up until then i had only ever nibbled the edge of the pastry off some.. but the smel of theml.. eurgh!

I likes the one I had last year - it was a shock as it was a vegan one...

I'm not planning on any this year though! It was not a life changing experience at all..

SuzieQQQ · 25/10/2020 02:36

They’re revolting. You aren’t missing much.

Afwan · 25/10/2020 03:27

A mince pie with a melted layer of Stilton on top = heavenly.

BefuddledPerson · 25/10/2020 03:33

You should go high quality for your first ever mince pie, I have only a small number each year but always either homemade or proper bakery. The type of pastry on the ones sold in boxes is like cardboard plus not enough filling.

I would just have them cold with nothing else other than a cup of tea, they are equivalent to a biscuit for me, not a dessert.

FortunesFave · 25/10/2020 03:50

Bloody awful things they are. And I love fruit cake and similar...but pies filled with sloppy, gritty fruit ... NO!

Canigoonroblox · 25/10/2020 03:55

My vote is for a lovely marks and Spencer’s mince pie, a wee drop of single cream and cup of tea, lovely.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 25/10/2020 03:56

Beef mince, steak and cheese or even better Cambodian chicken curry pies are delicious.
As are some fruit mince ones.

Mmmm all the pies.

BefuddledPerson · 25/10/2020 03:57

The fruit shouldn't be sloppy or gritty! The ones I make/eat are syrupy and luscious.

I'm feeling quite defensive of the poor, misunderstood mince pie.

yelyah22 · 25/10/2020 04:10

God I love mince pies. If they're gritty you're getting bad ones!.

I make my own because I'm a Christmas wanker but M&S ones are good for shop bought/packet, or better still get one from a local bakery.

SlopesOff · 25/10/2020 04:18

They are absolutely disgusting.
Bloodybridget · 25/10/2020 04:28

I'm in my 60s and only started eating them a few years ago, I always thought I didn't like them previously. How wrong I was, and how sad that I missed out on so many! I like them warmed, a dollop of cream or crème fraîche is good but not essential.

BefuddledPerson · 25/10/2020 04:30

I make my own because I'm a Christmas wanker Grin me too

Angelina82 · 25/10/2020 04:37

You really haven’t missed much. Why do you think people only eat them once a year?

DarceyDashwood · 25/10/2020 04:46

Mince Pies are one of my favourite Christmas treats. I try to leave having my first one until mid-November as once I start there’s not stopping me. Agree with a PP who says zap in microwave for a few seconds. But warm or cold works for me- ideally with a brew! ❤️

TikTakTikTak · 25/10/2020 04:52

YANBU, don't even try them, they're so awful.

If you post them to me, I'll get rid of them for you.

mayflowerapplepie · 25/10/2020 05:06

Mince pies are wonderful. Ignore all the weirdos upthread. Slightly warm, with cream or custard or ice cream or alone or in packs of 6 or however you fancy. Heaven on a plate

Jackparlabane · 25/10/2020 06:31

Have a good quality one - the basic ones in supermarkets have lots of greasy pastry and sort of raisin jam in. A proper buttery pastry with oozing alcoholic fruit is food of the gods! My mum mixes mincemeat with apple which is good too and less sweet.
Eat warm with whatever you like.
