To have never tried mince pies?

I've never tried a mince pie and I'm going to try one for the first time this Christmas. What is it about them? Do you eat them alone or with an extra?

OP posts:
paperclippink · 25/10/2020 06:32

I don't like then - but I don't like any 'Christmas flavour' spiced foods.

DP loves them, but makes a fuss if they aren't homemade and says supermarket ones aren't worth it.

WinWinnieTheWay · 25/10/2020 06:36

Are you my mil? I'm agog at the long list of normal foods she has not and will not at least try.

I like my mince pies at room temperature with a cup of coffee. No cream etc.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 25/10/2020 06:37

Mince pies are amazing. I warm them in the oven then take the lid off and put a generous dollop of brandy butter or brandy cream inside, replace lid, and enjoy. Yum!

MsChatterbox · 25/10/2020 06:37

They are my favourite and I hate that stores only sell them in autumn and winter!

DisgruntledPelican · 25/10/2020 06:38

They’re nice as a snack with coffee or as pps have said, warmed with cream as a dessert. Very very rich though.

The icing-topped ones are nice as a snack

Sexnotgender · 25/10/2020 06:42

@Afwan

A mince pie with a melted layer of Stilton on top = heavenly.
That made me feel a bit sick!

I hate dried fruit and blue cheese 😂

Monty27 · 25/10/2020 06:42

They definitely have to be good quality. With a cup of tea yum. Special occasion mince pies definitely with a dollop of fresh cream or custard and a glass of port 👍

AppleCrumbleCake · 25/10/2020 06:43

Ooh, they are one of the best things about Christmas! I dread to think how many i consume over the festive period!

I like them (preferably warm) with a cup of tea, or with custard.

Mine too. The list of things she doesn’t like the look of goes on and on.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/10/2020 06:46

I think they are best with two samosas, you eat the two somasos first and then throw the mince pie away.

I don't even like the box they come in.

ErinTingey · 25/10/2020 06:51

Home made ones are the best. If not then a good make you have to pay for. Don't by shops own or Mr Kipling - they are awful.

As pp said, warm from the oven with brandy cream.

FippertyGibbett · 25/10/2020 07:01

I have mine warm and swimming in cream, yummy !
With a mug of tea too.

lazylinguist · 25/10/2020 07:05

Homemade are best by far. Failing that, as high quality a bought one as you can find. If all that's available is a cheapo supermarket/Mr Kipling type one, don't bother! A good mince pie is a delicious thing, preferably with homemade brandy butter.

zigzagbetty · 25/10/2020 07:06

Costco are the best bought mince pies, one of the reasons for membership Smile

DragonPie · 25/10/2020 07:06

I just eat them as they are. I’ve bought some already from Lidl, they’re so cheap. The fresh ones from Greggs are really good.

flaviaritt · 25/10/2020 07:06

I love mince pies. Cold or warm. I like them with or without cream.

PumpkinsPatch · 25/10/2020 07:07

Yummmm. Now my stomach is rumbling.

I love the puff pastry ones from the bakery.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/10/2020 07:09

Dont like the boxes ones, the pastry is all wrong. But home made and from a bakery is a whole different story, warm with a dab of orange cream.

Mince pie season here starts on 1st Dec and ends on the 31st. Usually get through about 60 in that time.

Skigal86 · 25/10/2020 07:10

If you can, don’t get supermarket ones, they’ll ruin your first time! 😂 homemade or from a farm shop type place will be SO much better. I don’t think I’d ever eaten a shop bought one until I left home, both my grandmas made amazing mince pies and our family are a bit obsessed with them.

Ginfordinner · 25/10/2020 07:11

@grassisjeweled

Zapped in microwave for 10 seconds, add brandy butter
Doesn't that make the pastry soft?
QuimReaper · 25/10/2020 07:19

I thought I didn't like mince pies - much like many others on this thread, without really ever having tried one, perhaps once or twice in childhood - and kept to that line until last Christmas when a friend brought over a box of Konditor and Cook ones. I ate one to show willing, and ended up going out for another box on Christmas Eve! They're famously the best in London, and I expect the cheapo supermarket ones are a totally different ball game (although my husband bought and ate a box of said cheapo ones from Tesco last weekend - IN OCTOBER Hmm ) but my God those ones are good. And I don't generally like that spicy fruit sort of flavour profile (which is probably why I assumed I didn't like these).

nosswith · 25/10/2020 07:34

Personal preference is with cream though as I will be with someone on a diet restriction will not do so this year.

Hope OP you enjoy your first one.

waitforitwaitforit · 25/10/2020 07:36

They are amazing. I have them with a cup of tea or, as a treat, with some M&S salted caramel cream.

Halliehallie9828 · 25/10/2020 08:21

Iv never had one either... my parents don’t buy them either so I suppose I never had them around me to try when I was younger.
They look horrible.

I did see some salted caramel mince pies this year so may get a box of them to try.

Amummyatlast · 25/10/2020 08:27

Do you know anyone who makes homemade ones? You don’t want your first mince pie experience ruined by the cardboard supermarket ones. The pastry is really important, and mass produced ones are gross.

I love homemade ones in all forms. Great with a cup of tea, or slightly warm, or with custard, or ice-cream...I want one now.
