Car outside my house for over a month...

coffeelover3 · 13/10/2020 13:05

So I live beside a school entrance in a cul de sac, and in front of my house is space for 3 cars. I use one of the spaces to park my 1 car. This car has been parked in 2nd space, but edging into the 3rd space for about 5 weeks. It has no tax or insurance on it. I've never seen anyone driving it. It's becoming a real nuisance. There's double yellow all around the rest of the cul-de-sac - to stop mayhem at school times. There's only 1 space for the school collection now if I'm parked, and they cant really use that space as it edges onto the yellow lines as the mystery car is not in the middle. So my neighbour has had guests all week, and so he's using one of the spaces, the one nearest to my house, so I'm left with the 3rd space, which edges onto the yellow lines. Is there anything you can do about a car like that, just left there....

How do you know it is not taxed or insured?

gogojojo · 13/10/2020 13:08

Yes report it to the police if it seems to be abandoned - it could have been stolen then dumped. I'd ring the non emergency police number

Boom45 · 13/10/2020 13:08

If it's not taxed or insured you can report it as abandoned, it's usually possible on your local authority website if you google it

fitzbilly · 13/10/2020 13:09

You can easily check any car registration for tax and insurance on the DVLA website.

Op have you asked all your neighbors if anyone knows anything about it?

bonzo77 · 13/10/2020 13:09

You can check if it’s taxed by the dvla website. And report it to police or DLVA if it’s not. Unfortunately if it’s taxed etc there’s fuck all you can do about it. We had a van left outside our house for 5 months a couple of years ago.

RevolutionRadio · 13/10/2020 13:10

@thatwentbadly I assume the OP has put in the car reg on the sites where you can check if a car is taxed, insured and MOT'd.

Vanannabananna · 13/10/2020 13:10

We had this situation and it turned out to have been used in a robbery and dumped! Police took it away soon after.

coffeelover3 · 13/10/2020 13:10

Do you not have to display insurance and tax discs on a car? I suppose it could be taxed and insured and not have the discs displayed maybe?

Check its definitely untaxed through the deal website. If it is untaxed, contact a scrap collector to come and remove it. That's what I did, when I found one blocking my back entrance.

Michaelbaubles · 13/10/2020 13:14

No tax discs any more, although you can check the tax status online.

Not in the UK, not for ages
YouBringLightInToADarkPlace · 13/10/2020 13:14

Tax is done online now so no tax discs anymore, and there never was insurance discs... I'd check the registration number with the DVLA!

FizzyPink · 13/10/2020 13:14

We have this but it’s been there since March. It’s an elderly neighbour’s who was shielding but now has no need to go anywhere in it.
He’s taken the one right outside our house as well, I wish he’d just sell the damn thing

DuesToTheDirt · 13/10/2020 13:14

OP, you've never had to display insurance details on a car, and it's a few years since tax discs went out.

CodenameApollo · 13/10/2020 13:15

Do you display tax & insurance??

AdoptAdaptImprove · 13/10/2020 13:15

Tax discs were discontinued several years ago in the UK, and we’ve never had to display evidence of insurance. Are you elsewhere in the world?

And if you are in the UK, and you say you drive, how do you not know this?

vanillandhoney · 13/10/2020 13:15

No, you don't have to do either of those things.
Taylrse · 13/10/2020 13:15

There was a vehicle outside my mum's house for weeks and weeks.

I checked and it had no tax/mot, I contacted DVLA and they put a massive sticker on the car then a few days later towed it away

How do you manage to own a car and not know this? Nothing is displayed but you can check on the govt website.

movingonup20 · 13/10/2020 13:18

Are you in the U.K.? Some councils have rules about how long a vehicle can be left in one space, otherwise check with the DVD's re tax, don't think we have ever displayed insurance, you put the certificate in the glove box here

ExclamationPerfume · 13/10/2020 13:18

Contact your council and report it as abandoned.

Charleyhorses · 13/10/2020 13:18

PMSL. Op, this mythical car you are parking every day. Does that have tax and insurance discs on it?

Londonmummy66 · 13/10/2020 13:19

Get a local rugby team to come along and shove it forward onto the double yellows - the Council parking team will be along to clamp it in no time....

WeAllHaveWings · 13/10/2020 13:20

If it is a public highway and the vehicle is taxed (you can check online) they can leave it where ever they want.

When you say it is edging towards the next space do you mean the car is moving/handbrake not fully on? Can someone push it back?

Redolent · 13/10/2020 13:20

I don’t know where OP is getting her own tax disk from, if this is how she thinks if works...very odd.
