What’s the R number of MLM schemes?

Goodness me the MLMs are ramping up! Or is it just the people I associate with?!

So I don’t have a “am I being unreasonable” but rather “how do I reasonably tell people they’re being idiots?” Does no one do any research before joining one? Because I can’t imagine google is telling them it’s a good idea.

I’ve only ever replied to texts telling me people have joined with a “thanks! xx” Has anyone been braver?

Katie Price is selling Herbalife. That's all I need to know 🤣 Though 2 years ago we had a coffee product sweep through alot of my friends. Another friend started selling it and she had most of my friends on it then she had others selling it too. I fell out with her as I pointed out the reason this coffee gives people energy is the amphetamines it contains! I actually tried it and it was like taking speed! I wanted to jump from a roof I felt that wired! Anyway gradually people realised they wernt loosing weight or curing their chronic illnesses on it so her sales and many others stopped. Some friends have moved on to a couple of different MLMs over the last 2 years, each one fading away. Its such a con and makes me so so mad!

@BakedTattie

Apparently my friend is making over £4k per MONTH Selling body shop Hmm
I doubt Anita Roddick made that much profitGrin
AlexCabot · 12/10/2020 22:50

Being generous, she may be selling 4K a month but will only actually make about 1k from that.

12k a year from a job that involves spending all day hassling people on Facebook is not a very good profit.

I had a message from a bot last night telling me that she's been set a challenge to sell as many toothpastes as possible...these are £4 each from Acti Labs....and how many did i want....i just cannot believe these huns...who in their right mind does that??

PhilSwagielka · 22/10/2020 01:57

I loved the Body Shop as a kid. So sad to see it getting taken over by huns.

What a cheeky fucker. Have you replied?
myusernamewastakenbyme · 23/10/2020 07:13

No i opened the message and read it but never replied....I was furious...it came through quite late on Saturday night.....I'm coming really close to telling her to get a proper job....i know shes struggling so why jump from scam to scam losing money.

I must be about the only person on the planet who doesnt get the MLM invites. What am I doing wrong?

Nobody invites me to parties real or virtual. I must give off a 'leave me alone' vibe.

About 10 years ago I went to a Pampered Chef party. Only found out what it was when I got there. The chopper I bought now lives a lonely half life at the back of the cupboard, waiting to be culled in the next big clear out.

CakeRequired · 23/10/2020 07:46

It's a shame as they hook people in who are desperate, but don't do any research on the business so it's pretty much their own fault. Been seeing a few on FB who post pictures of fancy houses, cars, holidays etc going 'this is my life now thanks to all that I'm earning' and then someone in the comments asked when did they move, and they actually reply back with 'soon when I get enough promotions etc hun x'. 🤦‍♀️ You're just lying to people, your life hasn't changed at all except your house is now full of products you can't shift.

Sunshiney1981 · 23/10/2020 09:39

I once went to a Temple Spa party and was suckered into buying overpriced facial products which are ‘average’ at best. I won’t be re-buying.

I had to block the ‘hun’ in the end. The barrage of texts and emails afterwards was intrusive. She even tried to sign me up to the scheme! She got a very firm NO thanks there. A lot of the school mums have done the same and blocked her. She always starts her messages with ‘Hi hun, hope you’re well’ 🙄

More recently I went to a Tropic party. I was cynical but went along for the free drinks and nibbles and I have to say I am very impressed by the products and how natural they are. I’ve had so many compliments from close family and friends on my skin since I started using their stuff. In fact a couple of them have gone online and purchased some on the back of seeing my skin!
And happily the lady doesn’t at all push the products on us. It’s a shame Ma decided to sell this way because the products are easily good enough to stand alone.

Oh god I couldn’t have resisted that one. I’d have replied with

“I’ve been set a challenge to raise a grand for a new handbag for myself, how much are you donating?”

EyeDrops · 23/10/2020 10:06

Such an eye opening but depressing thread!

How do you feel/respond on the rare occasion when someone you know does succeed with it? An acquaintance on FB is with Body Shop and now has well over 100 people "downline", earning 4 figure sums each month. She's a rare one doing well with it, so obviously won't see all the "it's utter balls and lies" point of view?? I just feel sad that it's stepping on all the people below her signing up.

Tvci5 · 23/10/2020 10:40

Hi has anyone heard of The Q Life? A friend is constantly posting on FB about her promotions and smashing it! with others joining in congratulating her and talking about their 5th promotion as in many days. Yet when anyone ask what it is she'll only say private message me. I've looked online and it definitely seems like a MLM. I'm quite worried she's a widowed mum who thinks she'll be able to give up work and do this full time.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 23/10/2020 10:43

I have been known to get into facebook standoffs with MLM huns. Often their upline will wade in to tell me I'm knocking thousands of women who choose MLM as a career, they tell me they have already read the links I provide and that they are rubbish and then tell me how Area managers are making £4k a month (its always £4k, why is that a magic number?).

While I don't blame people that get suckered into MLM I do think the area managers and above are scum, they know that you can't make money without recruiting, they know that sales alone isn't enough to live on, they have suckered in all those women below them who are making nothing and living off their backs. It's disgusting.

faelavie · 23/10/2020 11:32

I recently started getting a lot of invites on Facebook from friends starting MLMs. Mostly Body Shop at Home and Poonique. So instead of messaging everyone individually, I put a status up asking people not to add me to any more MLM groups as I'm not interested. A friend who sells Scentsy replied really passive aggressively, said that being in pyramid schemes is totally fine, and deleted me from her friends list Hmm
Since then I've had about 4 more Body Shop group invites! I don't think any of them are getting any interest or making any money. I wish Body Shop would close their MLM arm, I like a lot of their products Sad
