I love when Kamala speaks to Pence with 'that smile' and says "I'm speaking" like he's a pupil speaking out of turn. School him, Kamala!!!

Roussette · 08/10/2020 03:20

I love her bringing up her record with regard to the justice system. No answer to that.

Pence is so so smarmy.

And I;m fed up with the moderator who is completely unable to shut down Pence over running his time repeatedly

I think I'm signing off. The big news will be the big fat fly that landed on Pence's very white hair and sat there for a while 😂

I just had a quick look at Facebook and almost all of my friends have posted a picture of The Fly. I didn't watch the debate itself, so that's my enduring image of it so far.

Not what I expected, but then 2020 has been nothing but surprises.

lionheart · 08/10/2020 06:35

Wish I'd seen the debate.

The amount of orange worn by Trump is probably the most reliable benchmark of his health.

VeryLittleOwl · 08/10/2020 07:42

That video of Trump from last night - that looks like a massive bruise on his right cheek. Combined with the eye, I'm wondering if he's had a serious fall in the last couple of days.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 08/10/2020 08:13

Apart from The Fly, discussions about whether Pink-eye Pence is showing signs of conjunctivitis - a symptom of covid.

I didn't watch the debate but this sounds like a good summary from what I have now watched and read.

The VP debate offers the nation a glimpse of a post-Trump future.
The restrained sparring between Pence and Harris was a reminder of what politics was once like — and could be again.
www.politico.com/news/2020/10/08/vp-debate-post-trump-harris-pence-427765

Let's say this at the outset: This was a boring, unfocused debate between two well-prepared and polished candidates who had little interest in answering the questions posed to them — and were under virtually no pressure from the moderator to do so.
...
Harris and Pence are both younger, more well-spoken, and closer to the beating hearts of their respective parties. Considering the challenges anyone would have defending the Trump record on the pandemic, Pence’s ability to leave the stage after 90 minutes without being gutted by Harris was a bar cleared.
...
Harris was well-prepared but restrained. She did not, as previous vice-presidential candidates have — including Joe Biden in 2008 and 2012 — play the role of vicious aggressor. In previous presidential campaigns that role has sometimes diminished the running mate.

Whether by design or happenstance, Harris seemed more interested in coming across as civil and presidential rather than as an attack dog. Considering the dynamics of the campaign that may have been a politically astute decision. She and Biden are well ahead in the polls and defining Harris as someone ready to be president, rather than as a political assassin, may be a more important use of her limited time in the spotlight.

Roussette · 08/10/2020 08:52

Thank you NorthWest having watched it live I find that interesting and agree.
I was just so frustrated with the moderator... when it was TrumpvBiden you knew where you were with the questions... i.e. 2 minutes each then a free for all.
This moderator asked one of them a question within the chosen subject (Covid, the Economy, racial injustice, SC) and then asked the other one another question, although it was within the subject, it was a different question. And Pence rode roughshod over that retaliating.

For instance when the delicate subject of Roe v Wade was asked as a subject, he spent most of his two minutes talking foreign policy, which was the previous subject. The moderator didnt interject at all !

And of ourse 'The Fly!.... I just knew that would be the big thing this morning!

Agree with this so much from the article...

'This debate was less high-pitch without Donald Trump ranting and raving on stage. But it was frustrating in its own way – especially for any woman who has ever been in a room with an interjecting, condescending man. Pence repeatedly interrupted Harris, something she rarely did to him; he repeatedly talked over moderator Susan Page of USA Today when she told him his time was up; he repeatedly flouted the rules he had previously agreed to. The disrespect of women was tangible, and it happened over and over

Page asked remarkably pointed, straightforward questions; Pence barely answered a single one. Instead, he offered word salad or tangents related to previous questions or just flat-out lies. On everything from abortion to national security to Covid-19 to healthcare, Pence was congenitally incapable of giving a direct answer to a direct question'

I caught up with Jimmy Kimmel about the debate and he also mentioned the pink eye on Pence.
He may have done a private test, not through the WH, so that the result doesn't have to be officially released.

Or sleepless nights?

I also felt this was fair (and no, not just because of the first line.) I watched a lot if it, not all.

OVienna · 08/10/2020 10:11

Lots of speculation in my US groups he'll be declared positive v soon. I give it 48 hours.

OVienna · 08/10/2020 10:16

The way Pence came across was less aggressive than Trump in not shutting up but really gave the impression he couldn't order his thoughts in a concise way and didn't have an "off" switch once he got started.

It reminded me of what people do when they dont speak a language as well as they need to and they know they have to just keep talking, saying the words they DO know, because someone might ask a question they don't understand.

Roussette · 08/10/2020 10:27

That's interesting. He was a bit bloodshot eyes, and the corner of his mouth looked like a bit odd, like he'd had a sore there. Of course, none of that leads to covid necessarily but he certainly looked tired.

I mean - he's had enough proximity. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone.

After I posted at 2.40am UK time 'moderator is rubbish' I turned off and went to sleep. Watching some clips now.

Pence is so very, deeply dislikeable. Like Harris, I grew up having to compete with men like that, who genuinely thought that their tedious pontifications and casually arrogant male privilege were evidence of talent.

In a pandemic, these men turn from toxic to dangerous. Harris sees it.

And we see it in Boris Johnson.

She's already been called a bitch, loud, 'not a lady' by some of the conservative sites. I mean - you could have played bingo, these people are so predictable.

Anyone wants to follow "Mike Pence's Fly" on twitter? Grin

(not sure about the 22. There may be other accounts.)

Lweji · 08/10/2020 11:41

At least Kamala didn't make Pence cry, although some people might claim she was responsible for his pink eye.

A White House security official is reportedly “gravely ill” with Covid.

At this point it might be easier to make a list of people in the WH who are not infected. Yet.
