To eat cake batter

BlackbirdFirst · 26/08/2020 15:47

I'm considering making a cake for the primary aim of eating some mixture - I am alone for the week and I need something sweet without going outside.
Cake mixture is the best bit anyway.
I just googled a recipe for edible cake batter and it suggests you shouldn't eat regular batter - not only because of the eggs, but also bacteria in the flour....
Has anyone heard this?

Yep.

Warning over eating raw dough due to E. coli risk in flour www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42236702

I do remember being told as a child not to eat cake batter. However, it hasn't stopped me from doing so every time I've had the chance for the last 30 years and I've lived to tell the tale.

FatBottomedGurl · 26/08/2020 15:52

I have made brownie mix and eaten about 80% of it straight from the bowl. I've lived to tell the tale. I also spent a large part of my youth eating butter and sugar mixed together only slightly ashamed

The rules/advice about eating raw eggs are there for a reason but the risks are minimal, and as long as you're not pregnant/ immuno-supressed, I wouldn't be overly concerned. Eggs in the UK are pretty well regulated.

formerbabe · 26/08/2020 15:53

I make cakes just so I can do this. Blush

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/08/2020 15:54

I eat raw cake batter every time I make a cake. I love making my Christmas cake each year, because the batter is even more delicious than ordinary cake batter, because of the brandy and spices.

BlackbirdFirst · 26/08/2020 15:55

I think the egg risk thing from salmonella has gone now.
The flour advice appears to be usa.....

YANBU. Cake batter is the best.

lazylinguist · 26/08/2020 15:56

YABU. Why anyone would want to eat horrible, raw cake batter rather than delicious cake is utterly beyond me.

Paperyfish · 26/08/2020 15:56

Think it’s pretty safe- enjoy!

Laiste · 26/08/2020 15:57

YAN alone!

Cake batter, cookie dough, raw pastry, pancake batter ... all of it i love to eat.

(i also really like raw bacon and a bit of raw sausage meat but we wont go there)

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/08/2020 15:58

Yep lion stamped eggs in the uk are very safe, however YABU as raw choc chip cookie dough is way better than cake batter, but it's your treat so crack on!!

MarmiteCrumpet25 · 26/08/2020 15:58

Yummy! This is a good recipe for melting cookie dough pots that might fit the bill and be safer to eat:

I wouldn't worry OP, live your best life and eat that cake batter- I do it all the time. Our eggs are vaccinated in this country (if red lion stamped.) I did once see a recipe for cookie dough where they microwaved the flour to make it safe to consume raw Hmm so I guess you could do that if you really really wanted I didn't bother though

Crunchymum · 26/08/2020 15:59

We always lick the bowl (to be fair, I do actually bake a cake though!)

RAW CAKE BATTER IS THE BEST

grey12 · 26/08/2020 16:02

I heard the same as PP. Eggs in the UK are well regulated so much less dangerous. Of course you do need to make sure the egg is fresh and avoid egg sandwiches/mayo.... for picnics.

Flour on the other hand needs to be cooked. For example if you add it to thicken sauces or stews you need to make sure it cooks through

TweetUsOnFacebook · 26/08/2020 16:04

Oh licking the bowl is one of life's simple pleasures. I do agree that cookie mix is better though.

PuckleP · 26/08/2020 16:05

Whole point of making a cake is to lick the bowl surely

Whatthebloodyell · 26/08/2020 16:06

I spent many years still hearing my
Mums voice in my head, and did not dare to eat cake batter. I finally gave in only this year and OMG I love raw cake mix.

TheHumanRubbishBin · 26/08/2020 16:10

If you're worried about raw flour you can just bake it before you use it in your mix.

It's how I make edible batter/dough for work.

TheHappyHerbivore · 26/08/2020 16:13

You can bake the flour at 180 for 10 minutes before putting it in the mix and that minimises any risk.

Where do you work that you need to make that?
