To eat cake batter

BlackbirdFirst · 26/08/2020 15:47

I'm considering making a cake for the primary aim of eating some mixture - I am alone for the week and I need something sweet without going outside.
Cake mixture is the best bit anyway.
I just googled a recipe for edible cake batter and it suggests you shouldn't eat regular batter - not only because of the eggs, but also bacteria in the flour....
Has anyone heard this?

Love cake mix.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/08/2020 17:57

Why does flour need baking? Never heard that before.

DappledThings · 26/08/2020 17:58

The concept of anyone making a cake and NOT licking the bowl/spoon/mixers is totally beyond me.

I thought the needing to cook flour thing was American?

I've always eaten raw cake batter/ cookie dough. DS1 often makes himself cookie dough as a treat Grin
My ex (their dad) was horrified when I let them lick the mixers and bowl when they were small. His Mum had never let him due to salmonella risk. But she was also adamant that gone off eggs were OK to put in a cake so I didn't pay any attention to her scaremongering. Hmm

You bastards - I'm really craving cake batter now!! :)

The thought of doing this makes me feel ill. Slimy, raw, eggy batter - bleurgh.

BiteyShark · 26/08/2020 18:09

Me too.
Bowl lickings are THE BEST.
Indeed, the very reason to make a cake in the first place for me too.

@WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat

I ate it as a child, although in later years I was told that the weevils in the flour, if eaten, can affect the brain and lead to delusions of grandure - but I can't really believe that is true. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Staines upon Thames and Moldovia.
Made me laugh GrinGrinGrin

Why does flour need baking? Never heard that before.

It was news to me as well, apparently the wheat grains aren't treated to get rid of bacteria. The flour could still be contaminated with animal poo etc from the field.
UK advice same as America
I've been eating the bowl scrapings for years and it hasn't made me ill, but won't bother in future as the thought makes me feel a bit queasy now.
Yep.

Warning over eating raw dough due to E. coli risk in flour www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-42236702
Its a US warning, ignore. They are paranoid about raw food.

DilloDaf · 26/08/2020 18:45

I always thought that bacteria couldn't survive in a dry substance like flour.
but this research says it can

Hogwash!! Generations of children have fought with their siblings over who gets the spoon/bowl to lick, and pretty sure most of us survived!!
