Hi everyone. I'm starting driving lessons in a few weeks and am wondering how long it took for you all to pass? My dad has very kindly offered to pay for the first 26 hours worth of lessons (2 hours, once a week) and then in will be funding them myself. So hoping not too long! :) Thank you

I had 10 x 1 hour lessons and a few hours driving my parents around when I was home from university. My mum told me the night before my test, after I'd driving her somewhere, that I'd probably fail.

My daughters both had 5 x 2 hour lessons then did 60 hours of mandatory logged driving (we are in the US). That was in an automatic though.

MeadowHay · 25/08/2020 17:16

Also I should have said I have no access to a car to practice outside of lessons either.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 25/08/2020 17:17

DD had about 10 but me and DH took her out in our car for hours every weekend.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 25/08/2020 17:18

If you know what test centre you are going to use you can google the routes they take. We just did those over and over.

pineapplepalmtree · 25/08/2020 17:18

20 hrs

Gingerfish91 · 25/08/2020 17:19

I had 4 proper, I hour lessons and a few goes with my mum. I put in for a cancellation as soon as my provisional licence came through and I got one a lot soon than I’d expected 😄. So I was 17 and 3 months when I passed. This was a few hundred years ago now so no theory test.

MorvaanReed · 25/08/2020 17:21

Passed in an Automatic. 3 months of two hour lessons, failed my first test, then just drove every where with DH until I felt more confident and passed on the second test.

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 25/08/2020 17:21

22 when I was 17, failed my first test after 20 hours due to a 'major' and managed to get booked on a cancellation slot the next week so did a 2 hour lesson before that and the passed with 2 minors.

Gingerfish91 · 25/08/2020 17:22

@cannotbebotheredanymore - my daughter is like that, she’s failed her last 4 music exams but plays Violin in a symphony orchestra. She’s just rubbish At the actual exam and goes to pieces. I think I’ll need a second mortgage when it comes to driving Lessons 😂

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 25/08/2020 17:23

That was with no practice in another car in between lessons, most of my formers learnt around the same time and I would say anywhere between 20-30 hours was normal (apart from those with crap instructors who dragged them on for their personal gain), this was 7 years ago.

loobyloo1234 · 25/08/2020 17:23

I had about 30 hours. I was 17 though so totally and utterly clueless Grin

I did pass first time though fortunately so I obviously needed them

8 one hour lessons with an instructor, no extra family practice time. Passed first time.

lioncitygirl · 25/08/2020 17:36

16 hours.

MatildaTheCat · 25/08/2020 17:39

6 hours including the hour before my test. My Dad took me out quite a lot though and made me do stuff that’s harder than the exam.

You don’t really start learning until you drive alone though.

19lottie82 · 25/08/2020 17:40

At least 100! But I think that’s a bit more than average 😂

GoldenPlover · 25/08/2020 17:40

I think you wont take as long if you're doing 2 hours a week, the closer together and longer your lessons are the quicker you'll pass.

I didnt really like my instructor but I felt too awkward to change from her as she knew my dad.

By the time I'd been learning for about 8 or 9 months without getting anywhere my parents insured me on their car so I could do more hours a week and that was when I really got it and was able to book my test pretty soon after.

I reckon all in all I probably paid for about 50 lessons.

Cookerhood · 25/08/2020 17:41

10 hours but it was 40 years ago. I drove everywhere I could apart from that, including a 200 mile journey with my parents up the A1 the weekend before. I was 17. The DC's each took between 40 & 50 hours plus some driving with us, which is what we were told it would take when they started. They all passed first time at 17 as well, with a certain amount of luck for all of us, I feel.

Prufrocks · 25/08/2020 17:41

I did about eleventy billion hours.

2x week intensive courses and months and months and months of standard 2 Hour lessons a couple of times a week.

Honestly it cost a fortune and if it weren’t for the fact that I live in the middle of Buttfuck Nowhere I wouldn’t have bothered but we have no public transport and the nearest corner shop is 4 miles away.

I sacked 3.5 instructors (one sort of half sacked me Blush) and didn’t ever get test ready until I bought my own car and drove myself everywhere with a passenger to keep things legal/safe.

On the plus side I did pass first time.

Bbang · 25/08/2020 19:02

I’ve had around 10 hours of lessons so far and I’m finally starting to remember things and it feels like driving is starting to click. My instructor reckons around 30 hours for me but I depends on how well I do with manoeuvres etc.

Personally I’d love to pass with 40 or less!

I passed my theory second time around also.

Justgorgeous · 25/08/2020 19:12

26 one hour lessons, passed first time. 32 years ago now.

purpledagger · 25/08/2020 19:24

40 hours, but my first instructor was terrible and I barely made any progress with him. The theory test was introduced just as I turned 17.

OH took about 5 lessons and passed first time.

Subwaysalad · 25/08/2020 19:24

2 x hour lessons a week is definitely a good shout as it’s quite intense.

I had 2 x hour lessons a week. Started on my 17th birthday so 14th June, passed on 13th September so less than 3 months.... just counted there and it would’ve been exactly 26 lessons I had then my test, passed first time

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 25/08/2020 19:27

Probably a good 200 lessons and about 375 hours (maybe more like 400) .

It took me 2 years of 1x 2hr lesson a week on average some where 1hr lessons or 1.5 hours

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 25/08/2020 19:31

wait maths doesn't add up it was more like 3 years not 2
