Hi everyone. I'm starting driving lessons in a few weeks and am wondering how long it took for you all to pass? My dad has very kindly offered to pay for the first 26 hours worth of lessons (2 hours, once a week) and then in will be funding them myself. So hoping not too long! :) Thank you

I started as soon as I turned 17 had 1 hour a week and didn't pass until a couple of months after my 18th birthday on my 3rd attempt.

That must work out at over 60 hours

Rumbletumbleinmytummy · 25/08/2020 23:58

I was incredibly lucky I think.
I kept trying to learn auto and I kept being told 30 lessons + then when I got married I financed a car for the family, DH started to be a right fucker towards me, and I thought no. You're not going to continue driving the car I pay for and being an arsehole.
Out of spite I learnt to drive (and had to do manual because the car on finance was a manual!)

The tutor was doing a 5 hours for £100 deal, I did them, and paid for another 5. Including my driving test.

I somehow passed. Absolute flook but I did it and have managed 4 years (in 3 weeks!) With 0 points on my licence.

You should be alright on the lessons your dads offered to pay for.

Wishing you all the best. It changes your life so much x

seayork2020 · 26/08/2020 00:04

A lot, but then I still don't drive although I am licensed - I think I am on the upper scale most people take a lot less

DieSchottin93 · 26/08/2020 00:08

Pffft I lost count. After a year of regular weekly lessons my driving instructor said I was ready for my test I failed Blush Took several attempts to pass and in total I learnt on and off for 4 years (didn't bother much during uni and 1 year was my year abroad). Probably a couple hundred, all financed out of my own pocket as well.

OneEpisode · 26/08/2020 00:11

No driving school lessons. My dad in the family car on Sunday afternoons depending on his shifts. So probably 3 lessons a month for 6 months.

Osirus · 26/08/2020 00:30

I passed my test in March (just before lockdown, thank goodness!).

I had around 25 two hour lessons between May- November last year. Had lessons most weeks. I’d say about the last six of those lessons I didn’t need, but I pushed my test back as far as my driving instructor was willing to book it as I was so nervous. I failed my first test at the end of November. I didn’t drive again until January when I bought my car and I passed in my own car on my second test.

BashfulClam · 26/08/2020 01:05

60 lessons but I broke my elbow in the middle and had to get a lot of refresher training.

Valkadin · 26/08/2020 01:09

I had about 40 lessons but no extra practice in any other vehicle. DS had 15 lessons last year and no practice as I thought we would just end up falling out but he passed.

Bouncingbelle · 26/08/2020 01:20

60 😳

steff13 · 26/08/2020 01:20

In my state, you're required to have 9 hours with an instructor if you're under 18, so that's what I had. I got my license at 16.

UsernameNotValid · 26/08/2020 01:30

Try not compare, some will have managed with the 1 and others might take 100.

The average (according to my instructor) is 40 hours, I took 33 and 5 tests to pass last year.

And after all that I haven't driven out of town, avoid busy times/places and only drive out of necessity. I hate it! 🤦‍♀️😂

GunsAndShips · 26/08/2020 01:50

I've no idea. Took 7 weeks though and I had 2hr lessons. Some weeks I had one lesson, sometimes two.

Please carry on parallel and reverse parking after your test (you must be able to do both to be test ready and one of them might come up on the actual test). You need to be a competent and safe driver and this includes reversing.

trixiebelden77 · 26/08/2020 04:37

Wow. Six hour-long lessons. No way we could have afforded dozens.

My parents also only had an automatic car so I didn’t practice in it, I had my lessons and passed in a manual. Not ‘improbable’ at all. Some people will pick it up quickly and others will need more time. That’s true for any manual skill I would have thought.

My mother did similar and she was 29 when she learned.

DerbyshireGirly · 26/08/2020 06:15

Around 150.

Yes, really.

I passed on my third test.

TheGlitterFairy · 26/08/2020 07:12

4 lessons with the last one the hour before my test. I had a car and drove each day with DF though, who taught me to drive so the lessons were to brush up before the test. Was 17 and lived in a rural area so very motivated to pass!

MinnieJackson · 26/08/2020 08:15

My dad's friend passed on his 9th test Grin
My first fail I couldn't concentrate at all and was trying not to laugh the whole time because the tester kept calling me Becky which isn't my name.
Second I forgot to use slip road Blush
Third was too many minors for hesitating at junctions and stuff.

fairydustandpixies · 26/08/2020 08:17

12 x 1hr lessons when I was 17.

RedHelenB · 26/08/2020 08:24

Of my dds and friends with or without extra car time the quickest pass was 9 months so about 36 hours driving. I was told by instructors that about 50 hours worth of driving was usually needed to be test ready.

I think a lot of these answers are on the low side.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 26/08/2020 08:24

18 lessons of 1 hour each. I was 19 and this was 32 years ago when there was no theory test (but no power steering or assisted braking either). The rule of thumb then was 1 hour for every year of your life if you were under 20 years old.

Governoress86 · 26/08/2020 08:29

I did about 20-25 hours and passed first time 😊

Cooper88 · 26/08/2020 08:38

35ish hours of lessons and then I drove my own twice in between, once to practice my parking and then an hours drive with my mother in law. Passed on my second test, took me 4months roughly BUT that is in an automatic which is easier as no clutch control to learn.

Heartofglass12345 · 26/08/2020 11:57

Well I got my provisional on my 17th birthday, passed my (6th) test 2 months after my 19th birthday Blush

strawberriesunited · 26/08/2020 12:09

I only had 5 lessons BUT my parents took me out nearly every night to get my confidence and the instructor basically taught me how to pass. Some of my friends are still having lessons, and they have been from 17-22 years old

MobLife · 26/08/2020 12:09

12x 1hr lessons which I started the day after my 17th birthday-passed 1st time (but with a shed load of minors) 3 months later

20 years on nearly I'm so glad I did it because I can imagine it's more of a challenge when you're older. I had a no fucks attitude to everything back then and driving was an absolute requirement due to living really rurally
