I mean, come on... the cast is outstanding, the concept could have been okay, but the script... oh dear. WTAF????

I've still never seen it! Maybe I won't now!

LaureBerthaud · 18/08/2020 00:10

Julia Roberts' bad wig stole the show.

LaureBerthaud · 18/08/2020 00:11

And there was a lot of overacting and exaggerated southern accents.

Pipandmum · 18/08/2020 00:11

It is dated. But I enjoyed it at the time (though not impressed with the portrayal of a type 1 diabetic now that I am one).

thefourgp · 18/08/2020 00:14

Yabu - the funeral scene is brilliantly acted and brings me to tears every time

BackforGood · 18/08/2020 00:15

I enjoyed it 30 odd years ago, and still enjoyed it when I rewatched it a couple of years ago.

I mean, it's no Shakespeare, but it is a very watchable film.

FlamedToACrisp · 18/08/2020 00:24

I'm still struggling to identify the plot! Several women live in the same town... they don't seem to have much in common... their menfolk are mostly a bit crap... one woman risks death to have a baby... she dies... there's a sad funeral scene (and, yes, it's moving but rather over-acted)... another of them has a baby which will be named after the dead one. Did I miss a key point?

Family Guy's version is known as Steel Vaginas I believe.

Bargebill19 · 18/08/2020 01:07

It’s my go to cry movie 🍿

MrsClatterbuck · 18/08/2020 01:18

It's not a bad movie but In her Shoes with Cameron Diaz Toni Collette and Shirley MacLaine is much better

Annist · 18/08/2020 01:35

YABU I still love it

EBlyton · 18/08/2020 02:01

It's of its time and having lived in small town America I get this. They are together despite their differences, because there isn't many more people around for support.
The diabetes story line now seems overly dramatic but this was 40 years ago, watch Toast his mother died of asthma, something unheard of but not impossible now.
In fact, in the 90's I nursed a few people who had brain damage from diabetic comas, again almost unheard of now.

angelofthelight · 18/08/2020 02:04

It was made in 1989. I still enjoy it.

Northernlassie1974 · 18/08/2020 02:08

I love it! A group of women powering through tough time, appear to be fragile flowers but get through some of the most difficult times of their lives. Individually and together, steel magnolias! I love it, agree with pp, Sally Fields acting on funeral scene is so real and raw! Can't comment on authenticity of accents etc as not from that part of the world, but personally, think the film is brilliant!!!

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/08/2020 02:16

It's one of my favorite movies. I grew up in a small Southern town, and its depiction is actually quite true to life, except for some of the accents, which were linguistically from all over the South and some parts unknown. It's based on a true story, by the way.

Dita73 · 18/08/2020 02:21

Hate to tell you it’s based on a true story

SenecaFallsRedux · 18/08/2020 02:22

Good accents: Sally, Shirley, Dolly. Not so good: Olympia and Julia. Native Southerners: Shirley, Dolly, and Julia so Julia should have been better.

SenorPeabodyEsq · 18/08/2020 04:24

It's not a plot-driven movie, it's about the characters.

I love it!

byvirtue · 18/08/2020 04:36

It’s just fabulous daarlin!

Seriously I love it and embrace it for all it’s eightiesness!

drigon · 18/08/2020 04:41

Sally Field alone makes it an excellent film! The two older women are more funny/ light relief with their sparring. Dolly Parton and her husband have a touching storyline too, if I remember rightly.

LunaNorth · 18/08/2020 05:20

‘I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years’ Grin

Love it.

Gingernaut · 18/08/2020 05:35

Well, you know what they say: if you don't have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!

UnfinishedSymphon · 18/08/2020 07:10

How dare you!!! I love this film, watch it every time it's on if I can. I love the relationships between Shirley McClain & Olympia Dukakis and Sally Field is exceptional as ever

Thedogscollar · 18/08/2020 07:12

YABVVU It's a great film with great actresses. It's funny and sad and I love it.

Dreamersandwishers · 18/08/2020 07:23

Yeah, it’s great. I lived in Texas and visited Louisiana quite often. It portrays Southern middle classes very well. And the friendships that women have is universal I think.
It’s of its time, but Darryl Hannah as a plain looking bible basher is a real revelation.
Julia was always the weak link for me, but she gained a bunch of fans.
